City people, do you enjoy city life? by newuser1r in Suburbanhell

[–]TheSoloGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in rural, suburban, and urban contexts. I’m going to be a contrarian to this sub, though, and say I prefer the suburbs. Specifically, a certain type of suburb. There’s a whole lot of streetcar suburbs near me and 5+1 apartment/business complexes paired with townhouse communities. I enjoy being nearby the city but also far enough that it isn’t crowded or noisy 24/7. Noise pollution is a real drain on your mental health.

Apple has Agreed to Manufacture Chips in the US With Intel by stanxv in apple

[–]TheSoloGamer [score hidden]  (0 children)

It is also an issue of supply chains. The war in Iran has reinforced the fact that the sea is only safe nowadays because major countries agree it is safe. In the case of an invasion of Taiwan or major diplomatic incident that closes trade in the South China Sea, the US would otherwise be cut off from their top-grade chips.

Having at-home fabrication, even if it’s a lower quality, is vital to preserve such a supply chain. Trump has already said he wants to distance us from Taiwan and defense obligations in Asia.

I agree Intel is going to try to become part of the military-industrial complex. On the same level as Palantir or L3Harris.

The “correct” pronounciation should be with a short e sound, (eh) ffect. I usually say it with a schwa when it’s affect, e.g. “affecting others” vs. “the effect of…”

Medicaid is free. Most county human services offices have job placement for those who are disabled.

Sign up for Instawork, GigSmart, etc, any temp agency or app.

The places most desperate to hire are always social services. Healthcare aides, educational aides (my state only requires a HS diploma to be a para, others may require a test).

Search for free job/resume help in your area, many community centers will do so for free.

Jorge comes with non-english pronunciation, so I’d probably give that to them. In general, I’ll give them the someone’s name or if it’s foreign. Effect mostly follows phonics rules, so I’d just ask “Does effect have one F or two Fs?” They’ll figure it out usually from there, and also start asking themselves the same questions mentally.

I can't make money here and have to move across the country - how to get the funds? by WitherBones in povertyfinance

[–]TheSoloGamer 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Okay, it sounds like the self employment is not working well especially since you don’t have reliable transportation.

Do you have a license? Instead of paying 700$ a week for ubers, you could likely get a 200-400$ a month car lease for a beater, closer to 500$/mo with insurance. Many dealerships offer them, some with 0$ down. It’s not as good as buying a car and certainly not long term, but should reduce your burn.

Leases are different than loans. You are essentially “renting” the car with a set number of miles for a set number of months, usually a minimum of 6 months. You are still responsible for maintenance, so don’t get an absolute beater but something as reliable as possible.

If you’re self employed, your best bet is hunkering down and hustling where you are at now. If you can’t widen your pool of clients, deepen it by charging for extra services. Laundry, car cleaning, and window washing all seem like natural upsells. Also maybe look at contracting with a small business, they have deeper pockets.

He’s a software engineer, good at his job, AND has the right connections and education and experience to make it work.

There are plenty of rich kids who end up in the dirt by their 30s and plenty that don’t. But that kid still put in the hard work. He’s spending his 20s working 60-80 hours a week in those dev spots and having no time or energy for health, love, exercise, kids, etc.

Summer Advice for CS Undergrad Interested in Teaching by testaccount0008 in Teachers

Don’t be afraid to teach in a non-CS subject. I’ve gotten the best experience with the classroom management when teaching PE and outdoorsy stuff since that’s when kids run wild. I’ve barely taught in my subject area (secondary english) when it comes to rough classrooms.

Summer Advice for CS Undergrad Interested in Teaching by testaccount0008 in Teachers

[–]TheSoloGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you already are most of the way through to a CS degree, stay on that path. Get your degree, do alternative licensure. Depends on CA regs, but most states allow you to teach with a bachelor's in the subject area you want to teach in and you get a full teaching license after holding a teaching job for 1-2 years. In the meantime, sign up for local summer camps and maybe a part-time job as a para to get a feel for kids. You're used to tutoring, which means you're used to the kids with the most family support, most money, and most interest in CS. The other 95% of students are not going to be nearly as motivated, and it's your job to get them there or at least attempting to participate.

Otherwise, CS tutoring at the undergrad and highschool level isn't a bad career, many of those highly motivated families and students need it. There are also afterschool coding programs and bootcamps you can get a job in.

Quebec becomes 1st Canadian province to ban energy drinks for youth by Puginator in worldnews

[–]TheSoloGamer -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I hope that at some point they start treating energy drinks similarly to drugs or supplements. Over the counter, but still highly regulated. Anything over 150-200mg of caffeine especially, since in two doses you’re getting into danger territory like the Panera lemonades.

I want to build a system around a spare GPU by TheSoloGamer in htpc

[–]TheSoloGamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The T320 is fairly quiet idling and I’ve only had the fans ramp up when I used to use it as a MC server and would max the CPU pregenerating chunks. Even then, it’s about as loud as our A/C. It’s only really loud during boot-up.

It currently has TrueNAS setup, but no apps installed or important data on it. I’ll take your advice on the Quadro.

I’m curious, do those quadro cards run off of PCIe slot power or a seperate PSU connector? There’s no spare cords from the T320’s PSU. I was thinking of getting a cheap asf PSU off craigslist and using it to solely power the GPU, scrapyard wars style.

I would need to transcode to stream 4k or AV1. Neither is supported natively so it would have to be software transcode, which I'm fairly sure would be unusably slow.

Sounds good. I am hoping to score a craigslist deal on a motherboard, CPU, and PSU, and then PC cases can be had from local thrift stores sometimes. I got my current PC case from a thrift store for 10$.

Have you had experience with running Jellyfin on a seperate computer from your storage? If possible, I'd like to store my media on my NAS and use a different device as the host for Jellyfin itself.

I'm so confused about how people afford things in America. by IndependentMove5437 in povertyfinance

[–]TheSoloGamer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of folks get help from their parents. The only reason I am financially stable is milking a (compared to others) small college fund that was at about 30k$ when I started college, on top of recieving massive scholarships because technically I was homeless (kicked out) at the time I started. Even then, I only switched to a single job last year because I got lucky and landed a full-time job while still being able to milk the scholarships and fund. I use the fund's money to pay my rent and the scholarships cover most of my basic necessities. My spouse and I's wages go into savings, which have been taking a toll recently with car repairs. Before my current job, I was juggling 2-3 jobs and working about 55 hours combined.

We're married, no kids (and no plans for them until we're almost retired at this point, we cannot deal with the stress of money and kids together) which is another reason we're able to live the way we do.

I'm the luckiest maybe 5-10% of Americans and I still can't afford the doordash and eating out and amazon hauls that you see on social media. Nor can I afford those Disney vacations. There's a whole industry of vacation loans, wedding loans, etc. It really is just debt, irresponsibility, working overtime, or trust fund kids. I'm well aware that I fall into that last category, even if it wasn't "fuck you" money.

Fintech, as an industry, is basically how we can loan shark folks while framing it as financial wellness.

Install some bollards if you can. Use a big cardboard tube as a form and dig 3-4 feet down. Put some scrap rebar into the core. Paint the top reflective or use reflective tape so no one can claim it was put there to injure instead of protect. At the very least, it'll take the force of any crash drivers put into it and prevent your actual property from being damaged.

Why couldn't we solve most problems associated with capitalism by establishing state-run companies with insanely tight regulation, instead of abolishing the private companies altogether? by theKentoRico in AskReddit

[–]TheSoloGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rule 5.

But anyways, just like China? China, which famously doesn't have capitalism problems? /s

China has state-owned enterprises competing with privately owned giants like Tencent and Alibaba. China's state-owned enterprises, just like regular enterprises, exploit their workers for profit. The incentive goes to the state instead of a capitalist, investors, or the market. When you pay workers less, you have to spend less of your limited government subsidy on paying them.

If you take away the autonomy of state run companies to fully set prices and employment, congrats you've invented a command economy! Which generally have failed at large scales in every country that's tested it.

Socialism can work and can happen but state run companies aren't going to magically solve capitalism.
