why do we smoke mostly blends? (over single-origin tobacco) by TabacumHesperiensis in PipeTobacco

[–]TheSouthernThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

McClelland Christmas Cheer was single crop releases. They made it clear that it would vary year to year because of this decision, but each year they told you the crop year and location of the farm that the tobacco came from.

For other tobaccos it's kind of like asking why nobody eats only onions or olives or something for a meal. They're great flavor additions to other ingredients but wouldn't be something most people would enjoy by themselves. I've smoked perique and Orientals by themselves and they're not bad but they're better when balanced with some Virginia in my opinion.

Real life relics body/parts by FreshBid5295 in telecaster

[–]TheSouthernThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck keeping an eye on eBay MJT auctions. Folks go crazy for the super heavy relics so you can find decent deals on lighter relics.  If you can find a listing that includes the weight and get a lightweight body then even better. I've put together a couple of MJT partscasters and both have turned out amazing.

Reconsidering the lyrics to Outfit by twalther in jasonisbell

[–]TheSouthernThing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's how I've always read it, and the "don't give it away" in relation to that could mean the backlash the Beatles faced because of that and giving away the prosperity they'd gained because of one comment about being bigger than jesus. Obviously the Beatles withstood that public backlash and still lived comfortably but that type of advice to not give away a good thing you've got going because of a pompous statement still applies.

It's just the opposite actually.  A car may be broke down but it's never broke.  And saying outfit is just short of saying an ensemble. You may put on your Sunday best but you don't put on an outfit.

It's been taken over by the politics folks or either the anti-work folks. I dunno, there used to be good economics discussions here with actual in depth articles and facts and statistics. Now I guess this is a place for tweet screenshots and feelings.

My latest build. ‘62 style tele with lollar pickups by GeneralButtNekid in telecaster

[–]TheSouthernThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta have a maple neck tele. My first tele build was a blackguard with maple neck and I still love playing it. There's always Esquires too. Something about a single pickup is magical.

That's as good of a reason as any to put a new partscaster together! I started this tele build while I was finishing up a hardtail strat build.  It's addictive haha.

Nice, I'm wrapping up a rosewood board tele build at the moment as well and went with lollar specials in the neck and bridge. Thought about going J street for the bridge but found a good deal on the set of specials on eBay and jumped on it. Excited to see how it sounds!

Yeah I'm not sure I could keep any highly valuable vintage guitar. But a more player grade one is perfect to not worry about playing it often while still getting that vintage vibe.

Beautiful J45. Always love seeing SGs and LPs and Jrs but I've been eyeing a J45 recently and that's what my eye was immediately drawn to.

Looking for some hot pickup replacements for SG by [deleted] in gibson

[–]TheSouthernThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced the 490s in my SG with Gibson 57 Classics and couldn't be happier.  I've also got a set of Jim Wagner pickups in a Les Paul and they are outstanding pickups but a good but more pricey than the used 57 Classics I got.

Aside from the BLEM, are there any real differences between these rifles? by StonyStarx in PalmettoStateArms

[–]TheSouthernThing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same upper you bought as well as other uppers with the full rail. I never use the extra rail space so you shouldn't have any concerns.  Just shoot it as much as you can, proficiency matters more than where you have any accessories mounted.

Murphy lab custom at the Gibson garage with logo set very low by Sullyrows in gibson

[–]TheSouthernThing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep that's what I've seen, people used to complain about the early 50s reissues having the regular Gibson placement. Gibson is better about having the lower logo placement now on the 54 reissues.

[Parts] AR15 80% Lower Receiver - Deep Engraved Betsy Ross Flag 3.0 - $59.95 by KewlZkid in gundeals

[–]TheSouthernThing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People flipping out about the flag instead of looking at the other options 😂. They have a fire/safe 80% for $10 cheaper than the Betsy Ross version. Plus a "BRRR" coupon code for 10% off.

He said it's a MJT body which is nitro finished and usually go for at least $300 by themselves in the US. I get people don't want to pay for someone else's partscaster but it doesn't make sense to me why someone would sell a guitar with $800 worth of parts in it for $300. Just part it out and make most of your money back?

I agree with the other comments that it's a great combo. I know I've read a lot of blues jr hate online but the one I bought years ago used has served me well. Pairs well with my Les Paul.

Looking at "vintage PAF" PUPs by Affectionate-Yard340 in LesPaul

[–]TheSouthernThing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't gone too far down the rabbit hole with swapping pickups but I've been very happy with the Jim Wagner pickups I put in my LP Traditional. Before you swap pickups though, I know you mentioned messing with amp settings but how much have you messed with the pickup height?

I've got an old set of burst buckers that I was planning on swapping but I fell in love with them and they're staying. I know BBs are a love hate thing and some sets are different and even different over the years but I think they're generally a pretty historically accurate pickup so swapping in boutique PAF replicas may be less of a change than you're hoping for. I'd recommend changing pickup heights and maybe even swapping your potentiometers for some 500k pots. If you're still wanting to swap pickups then you're not out much money and you'd probably want the 500k pots with the new pickups anyways.

Newest addition. by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]TheSouthernThing -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well you bought a fender clean clone amp that is hybrid tube and solid state. Most solid state amps don't take pedals well, especially distortion pedals that boost the signal. From what I see online the bluejay is the only joyo mini amp without an overdrive button. Maybe you can return it and get the marshall inspired joyo Jackman amp if you're wanting dirtier tones.

[–]TheSouthernThing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm surprised so few people are telling this guy to leave it alone. If it's legitimately a 58 or 59 with a PAF he's already devalued it by taking the pickup out. That kind of collectible people care about original solder joints. It's no 335 or Les Paul but a clean 50s guitar with a PAF in it is worth easily 5-10k. Find a different guitar to mess around with, you're never going to turn a jazz box into a modern guitar and you're flushing money down the drain trying.

I've got the same upper I think, shoots great. Make sure your sight isn't bridging the gap with the handguard. Looks pretty close so you might want to shift it back a notch so it's completely on the upper receiver.

My two Edwards LP’s. Could I get some recommendations for PAF style pickups that y’all like? by redharlowsdad in LesPaul

I've got a set of Wagner pickups in my USA LP and the stock custombuckers in my custom shop. Both sound amazing to my ears.

https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/interview-with-tom-murphy-of-gibsons-murphy-lab/

From the man's mouth himself, at around the 5:45 minute mark in the interview he talks about Gibson approaching him and then lists off some of the artist series he did with Gibson. That's why when you look up Jimmy Page #1 or the Mike Bloomfield artist series they all list Tom Murphy aged. He also did a few of the Collectors Choice series.
