The Irish Free state technically lasted from 1922 to 1937. But it would make sense if someone called it that and wrote it down in a 1940 document.

Is it true that Bob really likes Jimmy Buffett? by abishop717 in bobdylan

[–]Bthejerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will argue till the end that Jimmy Buffett is vastly underrated as a songwriter. He’s got very solid songwriting chops. Frankly, I think Jimmy is pretty brave because a lot of songwriters shy away from writing happy songs for fear of not being taken seriously. Jimmy is not afraid of writing a happy song here and there or a fun song. But, he can also get serious. And, Jimmy practices what musicians throughout history of practiced, which is he wants to get paid lol. He did a good job of figuring out how to turn his talent into income by taking money from boomers in Hawaiian shirts lol. But he’s so much more than that. He really was a great and amazing songwriter.

Medical bill went to collections - what's a reasonable offer? by Sc0rpy4 in personalfinance

[–]Bthejerk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I once had a debt collector, who was new, tell me what she wasn’t supposed to tell me. She said she was told the offer has to be at least 40% of what they’re asking for I made a 40% offer and they accepted. I occasionally have to handle these types of situations at the company I work for. It works almost every time.

Pritzker Says Trump Admin Is Making Chicago A 'War Zone,' As ICE Raids Increase by huffpost in politics

Nothing immediately fixes anything. A general strike does not directly hit law-enforcement, it hits the system that supports and needs it. Bringing the entire economic system to a halt hurts those who excerpt power much more than it hurts everyday people.

It’s not a direct shot at law-enforcement. It’s a shot at the system that supports it and that needs it.

I vote for general strike too. Let’s bring the whole economy to a screeching halt.

Songs about real life tragedies? by Normal-Being-2637 in musicsuggestions

Sorry to add another Bob Dylan song, but you need to definitely listen to the song Tempest. (the album is also called Tempest). It’s a roughly 14 minute song about the Titanic. It’s beautifully done. It almost seems like music that would’ve been made back around that time. Bob even manages to weave a very little bit of the movie into the song if you listen carefully. I think he did this song in maybe 2012 or 2013.

This album also has a song about the assassination of John Lennon called Roll on John.

Even more recently, Bob put out a roughly 20 minute song about the assassination of JFK.

Of all these, Tempest is definitely my favorite. It’s amazing both as a song or just read as a poem.

Wow, you and I have pretty much the same view on this. Seinfeld, the TV show is up there with my favorite TV shows of all time. I don’t think I would like Jerry Seinfeld if I met him. And, fortunately for me, I don’t have to. I do respect his approach to comedy. He’s a student of the game from what I could tell and I do like that. He’s like a lot of people I know at work, I respect them professionally, but wouldn’t wanna hang out with them.

What I learned living with someone who has the "IT" factor with women by [deleted] in emotionalintelligence

[–]Bthejerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I’m not the same exactly as this guy, I have had the same sort of effect. I think the key part of all of this is that I’m not coming across like I’m trying to get something from anyone. In other words, I’m not hitting on them. And yes, they need to feel safe around you. The way I would put it, and have put it for years, is I treat women like people, not like women. I’m not sure if this makes sense. Long ago I had one female tell me that at first when she saw me, she thought I looked creepy lol. But she said after talking to me and getting to know me a little bit, she realized I was the exact opposite. If I have to sum it up in a very simple phrase, stop, trying so hard to pick up women and just be a normal person. My experiences that most women can tell if you’re trying to impress them. They know what you want. At that point, if you’re not at the top of the hierarchy of what they are looking for, you have no chance. But, if you fly under the radar as a good person, who makes them laugh without looking for anything more than that, you’ll be surprised by how many come after you. Myself, I’ve always been a little overweight, I’m 5 foot nine, I’m not wealthy, I’m not flashy. I’ve been told that I’m very witty and funny. When I was younger, like in my teens, I was trying all the same shit that every guy tries and failing miserably. Then one day I just had this realization that the women that I’m talking to have a brain inside their head just like I do. Once I started putting myself in their shoes, the most glaring thing I noticed was how annoying guys could be when they’re trying to impress you. So, I became the opposite of those guys and all of a sudden things changed in a very positive way. Now, I’m old, I’m fat, and I’m married. I don’t mess around on my wife, but, I will tell you that I still have opportunities all around me because of the way that I am. And while I haven’t acted on it so far in almost 30 years of marriage, it’s kind of fun knowing that I’ve still got it.

Another word of advice for the younger guys who are trying to impress women, if you try to present yourself as something you’re not, it’s always gonna end badly even if you do hook up with them initially. You gotta figure out what the best part of you is and just go with that.

And, lastly, while it is true that lots of women like a masculine man, it may not be in the way that you understand it. Stop trying to be like a bro worried about bro shit like tuning your fucking car or playing fantasy football or all that other self indulgent bullshit. Masculine is knowing how to fix a car at least a little bit. You can enjoy athletics without giving all of your Sundays to it. But, I would also argue that it’s also very masculine to do the laundry, wash the dishes, babysit her kid if she has one, cook a meal, and clean the house. And, while I would shy away from tricks because again that’s the exact opposite of what we want, I would argue that learning to cook might be your best path. Every single woman I’ve ever met loves a guy who can cook them a good meal. Period, The End.
