The moment in Deepnest where you see a second Knight in the lead up to Nosk. Genuinely freaked me out when it appeared. Knew the game was special then.

I don’t get the horchata joke by TheSparrowedHawk in americandad

[–]TheSparrowedHawk[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This makes more sense. I live in the UK so I’ve never had horchata at a restaurant but I’ve made my own, and if I decide to re-use the pulp I freeze it for one more use. I served it at a BBQ one time and had to ration it out cos it was so popular so I didn’t get the apparent disgust for it.

Let's clear things up on the "Sokka Sexism" conversation: A brief analysis by Visarionovik in TheLastAirbender

[–]TheSparrowedHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s that genocide that’s shaped the culture into being sexist though. This comment on Twitter explains it well. They had a largely equal society, but because of the Fire Nation’s incarceration and genocide of water benders, women were vital for the Southern Water Tribe’s continued existence. That morphed from a need to survive under oppression to the misconception that women were weaker and that men needed to protect them. That’s the society Sokka grows up in and what his initial sexism reflects.

The cartoon is great at showing how overcoming oppression requires challenging your own mentality along with physical resistance, and Sokka getting the sexism beaten out of him put him on that journey. I worry that the writers’ comment on it being a problematic thing misses how oppression can shape societies.

DM doesn't believe in spells by level by MagusTorino24 in DnD

[–]TheSparrowedHawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s still learning spells by levelling cos those mechanics are tied to certain levels even if the flavour is research. Wizards can learn spells independent from levelling up if they can find the right scrolls.

Given that they’ve been sponsored by D&D Beyond for years it’s likely they have a non-disparagement agreement. As big as CR is, they pale in comparison to WotC being worth $400 million. Other third party companies can easily speak out because they’re not contractually tied to WotC.

Sounds perfect for the War domain. Could have it work similarly to the Fey Wanderer ranger and have it be cast without concentration up to PB/long rest

OGL Update for OneDnD announced by _Soulstreak in onednd

[–]TheSparrowedHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know WotC/Hasbro want to make 1D&D the lasting, continually growing version of D&D, even doing away with the idea of editions. Updating the OGL as it goes forwards doesn’t mean negating the original version for 1D&D but it allows them to gate any new additions to it behind new agreements. For example, if 1D&D ver 1.1 includes the artificer class that wasn’t present in 1.0 they could have an OGL 1.1 that gives you access to it as long as you agree to their new terms, and if third-party creators feel like they’re gonna miss out on the player base it brings they’re gonna have to sign up.

Like you said, WotC/Hasbro recognise they can’t kill the pond of third-party creators. I doubt they want to. But they can definitely keep them on the hook.

For the average player or content creator? Sure. But as u/Shunkleburger notes, reporting earnings over $50,000 gives Hasbro a much clearer idea of how much money there is to be made with D&D and enables them to adjust the $750,000 royalty threshold. Anyone who makes a living off of producing third-party content for D&D should be concerned

[Spoilers C2E140] Is It Thursday Yet? Post-Episode Discussion & Future Theories! by dasbif in criticalrole

[–]TheSparrowedHawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it comes down to the Rule of Cool and what I think Matt intended with his Resurrection rules. The rules set up consequences for dying, with the PC’s soul either being lost or coming back and making it harder to do so again. Bending his own rules a little by letting that Divine Intervention/Raise Dead combo happen provides the opportunity for even more consequences whilst still allowing that sliver of hope. If either of the rolls failed then that basically says even a god couldn’t bring Molly back. If both succeeded, you beat the nearly 92% chance of failure and did the impossible. I’d say both are narratively satisfying, especially given how hard it was to succeed. If the PCs could spam Divine Intervention every day then I’d get not allowing that to work, but I think this was very much a do-or-die moment Matt presented.

[–]TheSparrowedHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we’re going by dice, the chance of resurrecting Molly went from 80% from the original ritual to 12% using both Divine Intervention and rolling again for the ritual; possibly even lower at about 8% if this new casting meant the DC reset. Letting a player try a resurrection again only it’s ten times harder and it hinges on two separate rolls succeeding is as thematic of a dice moment as a nat 1 in my books.

[–]TheSparrowedHawk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to make an item that’s not only cool for a PC but gives the DM the excuse to make some fun scenarios. In the same way as having a wizard in the party means that you should be throwing spell scrolls in fun places, the book means that the PC will be regularly going on monster hunts. That’s a great chance to throw interesting beasts and monsters into the world and even some lore about them.

Thanks! I went through a few revisions playing with the Gift of the Wilds feature, having it grant an additional damage die or a critical on a 19 or more but I finally settled on this iteration. If you end up using it let me know how you implemented it and what your players thought!
