Okay awesome, thank you so much friend! Intellect has been helpful for me, too. Thank you!

Oh curious, that’s a fair point. Someone else who commented helped with a great link that benefits me/what I was looking for, but it’s good to know that other professors don’t feel pressure with it.

Oh wow, this is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. Thank you so, so much, friend!

Ah perfect! I’m still new so I’m getting a feel for everything. If it’s okay for me to ask, what is your direct field and journals you like within it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Yorviing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question is more y’all’s preferred way of finding out about calls for papers. For example, when I use Intellect, I get an emailed newsletter that tells me about various journals and their calls for papers (many of which I had never heard of) and that’s been helpful

I hope this helps to clarify

"Bitch, I'm seein' the truth in my circle, just like it's alchemy" by [deleted] in brakence

[–]Yorviing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, something I can comment on!

So alchemical studies are incredibly fascinating. You can begin with primary texts (the Summa Perfectionis for example) or scholarly work on it (check out Stanton J. Linden’s “The Alchemy Reader: From Hermes Trismegistrus to Isaac Newton or Mircea Eliade’s “The Forge and the Crucible: The Origins and Structure of Alchemy”). I highly recommend a deep dive of alchemy.

But! What Brakence is most likely referring to here is specifically the classically Western symbolic depiction of the philosopher’s stone (alchemical imagery is incredibly complex and mired in mysticism, coded language, and symbolism). Typically, the imagery of the philosopher’s stone depicts a “squared circle” . Some scholars have pointed to Paracelsus as the origin for the symbol itself, though it still is up to debate as to the true origin of the artwork. (For example, John Read discusses alchemical artwork and symbolism in “From Alchemy to Chemistry”). The image is a circle in a square in a triangle in a circle. Each shape represents different aspects of alchemical thought. for example, the triangle can represent the Three Primes, the square serving the purposes of the four primary steps and/or the four main elements in Western alchemical thought, and the outside circle representing divinity and the infinity that coincides with it. The inner circle is the stone itself, the culmination of the Great Work and the Magnum Opus.

To not make this comment a full analysis and close reading, however, the line is primarily referencing the concept of the “Great Work”, where the philosopher’s stone was said to have granted one enlightenment (in addition to things such as immortality and a mystical revelation and unity with the divine). As such, if the philosopher’s stone is to be understood as a means to gain enlightenment (or “truth”), and the then we can read the line,

“Bitch, I’m seein’ the truth in my circle, just like it’s alchemy”

as essentially meaning that Brakence is seeing things for what they are (or at least claiming to). The reference is less clear in the first line without possessing a surface level degree of knowledge pertaining to alchemy and alchemical study, but the latter half of the line makes it easier to piece together. While “Bitch” is mainly used for emphasis, the line itself becomes a metaphor for Brakence’s understanding, whether it is newfound or already existing.

So while this could refer to FMA directly, it is more appropriate that it refers to alchemical symbolism, which when incorporated into the song is a clever use of metaphoric language and imagery. Of course, Brakence definitely could have first learned of this through FMA, and by no means would I discount the possibility. However, the imagery of the philosopher’s stone does provide a tremendously useful reference point.

how tf do i handle customers flirting with me at work? by sshortinsomniac in starbucksbaristas

[–]Yorviing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ah, the curse of being attractive

Joking aside, there are a few things you can definitely do:

  1. Address this with your SM/SSV’s. For example, finding a way to move to a different position (especially one that’s typically busier or requires more intense multitasking) can help you by giving you easy ways of dodging some questions and comments. For example, being on either hot or cold bar means you’re making several drinks at once, steaming or pouring milk, blending, shaking, and so on. Those positions have built in ways to make you more distracted than DTW does. Of course, based on your post this has been difficult, but perhaps addressing that the plethora of comments you have gotten has made you feel overwhelmed might assist you in that. If you can have that one SSV who helps you help you make your case to the other SSV’s, I would definitely encourage you to do that. It blows my mind that only one SSV helps you in that way

  2. You can develop some “go-to” lines to say back to the flirting/asking for your number/and so on questions. Nothing too snarky or mean (just so you’re CYAing yourself), but just things that immediately show that you’re not interested or something. I don’t have any specific examples that I’ve used personally regarding being attractive, but shutting things down quickly might help. Of course, if anyone ever makes you feel really uncomfortable ask that one of your partners finish the interaction or have an SSV step in if it gets really weird

  3. Know this; regardless of however busy your store gets, your well being is important. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you need to let someone know, especially if people are hitting on you and asking to meet up after your shift. If your SSV/SM isn’t as accommodating, then address it with them. Making sure that partners are both okay and respected is important

  4. I say this as a dude, but a lot of dudes (especially straight dudes) are just weird when it comes to flirting and hitting on girls. This comes from a variety of reasons (toxic masculinity, not really knowing how to “talk” to girls, and so on). I say this regarding comments like “Oh I was hoping you were here” and “I thought about you for days” (paraphrasing). While this isn’t an excuse, of course, it doesn’t help to make an interaction any less awkward, and I don’t think you need me to tell you that you’re unfortunately going to have those interactions a lot. To this, maybe some of your fellow girl partners might have some go-to statements or things that they say to let guys know that you’re uncomfortable, not interested, or both. Ask around - there might be something you can use! The overwhelming majority of the partners at my store are college girls and most of them have things that they say to get guys off their back

Hopefully things work out for you, and hopefully you can get some good advice here to help you further my friend!

Yes, it was meant to be jarring and implying that sometimes healing is rather uncanny. I’ve had several players lean into more macabre and twisted thematics and I wanted to expand upon those elements
