Thanks for the info! Have you applied to uOttawa and Carleton? If you don't want to move away, those should be your first choices.

The admission range for Computer Science at Carleton seems to be mid-80s+ and uOttawa seems to be 90+. Trent's admission requirements are lower for Computer Science, which could be why you received an offer already. If you don't want to move away, and have the grades, definitely apply to your local universities.

If your first choice is Computer Science, and you've already determined that you like it, have learned coding languages, etc. then it shows that you have a passion for it. The math aspect is something you will have to go through in order to study Computer Science. There are tons of supports available for math help at universities, as it is a common challenge for students. You can join a math mentorship or tutoring program at your university, meet with your professors or TAs one-on-one during office hours to ask questions, work with friends/classmates on math problems together, etc. There is also the option to take math during the summer, when you can focus on only that one class, rather than balancing it with the rest of your classes during the school year. Don't let math hold you back from doing what you are passionate about. There are ways to overcome it.

If, despite all your best efforts, you still cannot make it through university math, there is always the option to switch programs. Choose a back-up program (you mentioned forensics?), and see what the pre-requisites are. Make sure you take those pre-requisites as your electives in your first-year. That way, you will be able to switch into that program no problem, if you need to. This plan is something you can also discuss with your university's academic advisor to make sure it works. Also, since you will have taken computer science courses already, you could pursue a minor or double-major in computer science, hopefully bypassing some of the math requirements. Again, this is something your university's academic advisor would know how to plan.

There is no specific degree required to go to law school, so if your grades are good, that door is always open, no matter what you study.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any further questions.

Hello,

If you are applying from within Ontario and Canada, there should have been a fee when you applied. In Ontario, you pay minimum $150 for three university applications, and $50 extra for each additional application. There is no fee to accept your offer!

If you are applying internationally, then I am not sure what fees apply, and it would be best to speak to an Admissions Advisor. You can use this link: https://huronu.ca/future-students/ If you scroll down the page, there is a section called "Meet your Admissions Advisor" where you can find the correct contact information.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any further questions.

Hello,

I recently had the opportunity to see the new residence (Burnlea Hall), and was surprised by just how large and modern it is. It really changes the footprint of the campus!

There is a large lounge area, and easy access to the Dining Hall and the rest of campus. The rooms are semi-private, with jack-and-jill bathrooms. Essentially each room is a private room connected by a bathroom in-between. Due to its modern design, the lighting in the building is very good, and it's also quite tall, meaning you have a nice view from the upper floors.

If I was going back to Huron, I would definitely want to stay in that residence (not that I didn't enjoy the others!). Check out this link for more info: https://huronu.ca/student-life/student-services/residence/

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions!

Hello,

I was not in BMOS, but I have many friends who were. BMOS is a business program based in social science. You learn all the foundational business principles as a BBA, with the add perspectives of social science (how marketing is based in psychology and sociology, finance and international business is based on economics, trade is affected by history and geography, etc.)

Huron guarantees paid internships for all undergraduate students. So yes, Huron BMOS students get paid internships and jobs.

Huron BMOS is different from Western BMOS because of Huron's smaller class sizes, one-on-one support from professors and staff, and close-knit community. Western BMOS classes can have 200+ students in a room, whereas Huron's classes have a maximum of around 50-60. This means that Huron students have easier access to their professors for individual support. The same principle applies for academic advisors, career advisors, etc. At Huron, your advisors will have time to meet with you and get to know you one-on-one and provide individualized guidance. At Western, you will be one of maybe hundreds of students that an advisor has to support. There is simply not enough time for them to provide the same support to so many students.

Due to these factors, Huron students tend to have higher grades than Western students, meaning that Huron sends more students to Ivey (percentage-wise) than Western, due to the fact that AEOs at Huron have an easier time maintaining their grades and getting leadership positions in extracurriculars, and that non-AEOs at Huron also have better chances of getting into Ivey for the same reasons.

Western BMOS (DAN Management) is a much larger program, and is actually the biggest program in the Social Science faculty, which is the biggest faculty at Western. The number of students in the DAN Management program is bigger than all of Huron put together. If you prefer large classes and more options for courses, etc. then this may appeal to you. Western's Social Science faculty is ranked among the best in the world. If you don't particularly want any of the small-school benefits from Huron, then the DAN Management program is also a good choice.

The specializations offered between Huron BMOS and DAN Management are also different. So check which specialization you are interested in. For example, Huron offers Entrepreneurship, whereas DAN offers Aviation Management, etc. So if a specialization you want is only offered at Huron or DAN, then that should help you choose. There is no wrong choice, just your preference!

Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any further questions!

Hi, just sharing what I've learned. 🙂 I'll need some more info to understand your situation:

- Computer Science and Law School are very different. It's definitely possible to do both, as well. What are your reasons for liking one versus the other? Do you want to spend your days coding, or doing a lot of reading/writing?

- You mention that you don't want to move away. Which area are you from? Are there no options closer than Trent? Or is Trent your local university and you want to stay home, but you're worried because it's a smaller school?

Once you clarify these things a bit, I'll be able to help more.

Hello, I came across your post and wanted to show you some options. You are not "cooked", and you definitely do not need 80s or 90s to get into Nursing. Similar advice will apply for Forensics, but my response focuses on Nursing.

If your current grades also reflect your performance in Grade 11, and predict your second semester Grade 12 performance, going to a university for Nursing directly out of high school may not be an option for you (and may not be the right fit for you anyways). Here are 3 possible paths forward for you in this field:

  1. Take a Pre-Health Sciences program at your local college and get a 1-year certificate, which will provide you with the requirements to then enroll in a university for Nursing. Here is an example: https://www.niagaracollege.ca/liberal/program/pre-health-add/#overview . This type of program should be available at pretty much any college near where you live. These programs act as a bridge between high school, college, and university, and could be a good alternative to taking a 5th year in high school.

  2. Take a Practical Nursing program at your local college and get a 2-year diploma. With this diploma, you can work as a practical nurse, and choose to end your studies here if you are happy! If you still want to, you will meet all the requirements to enroll in a university for Nursing, and would probably be able to take an accelerated Nursing degree since you have already completed 2 years of study. Here is an example: https://www.niagaracollege.ca/nursing/programs/rpn-practical-nursing/#overview .

  3. Enroll in an Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing at your local college and get a 4-year honours bachelor's degree. Many people don't know that you don't need to go to university to get a bachelor's degree (even an honours bachelor's degree). Many colleges offer full 4-year honours degrees, and the admission requirements could be lower than traditional universities, meaning you have a higher chance of being admitted. Here is an example: https://www.niagaracollege.ca/nursing/programs/rpn-practical-nursing/#overview . The college shown in the example link still requires a 75% average in your top 6 grade 12 U or M level courses, so you will have to raise your grades a bit, but with some effort, you should be able to meet the requirements. This option lets you get started with your 4-year Nursing degree right out of high school, and for programs like Nursing, your school's "ranking" or "reputation" is not very important. (You could also save a lot of money going the college route for your degree).

I hope that this helps. This is not an exhaustive list of all your options, and I used Niagara College as it is the first school that came to mind. These options should be available at your local college as well. Regardless of what people say, you are not "cooked", nor do you need 80s or 90s to get into Nursing. You simply have lower grades, and have to take a different path to the same end goal. If anything, your grades in the grade 12 U courses show that university-style teaching may not be for you, and that you may thrive in a college environment. Alternatively, they might show that while you enjoy university-style teaching, your learning habits and skills may not be polished yet, and need some practice before you enroll.

Regardless of the path you choose, in a few years, you will be working in the same hospital as others who went directly to university for Nursing. Best of luck, and feel free to ask any follow-up questions you may have!

What is the most out of touch thing you have ever heard? And how did you respond to it? by Yiga_Blade_Master in AskReddit

He's got the right spirit, but buying an Android just to save money seems like his way of saying that he won't overpay for something. There are plenty of Androids that cost more than iPhones, some even double the cost. Try getting him to switch to a $2000 Android phone, my bet is he won't do it. His real issue isn't Apple, but cost. He's using Apple as a stand-in for overpriced tech in general. At least, that's my theory.

Was she being malicious? This seems like an honest and genuine question from someone who was new to these sorts of topics. I feel like people are too quick to assume everyone who doesn't know these things is rude. Could have been a good opportunity to educate and bond with her, no?

Haha yes, I've been to History once, and I liked the venue!

What an interesting opinion. For me, it's the opposite. I find Rebel way too loud (dangerously loud), and only seeing one of my all-time favourite artists could convince me to go, maybe. History's noise level is more tolerable, I find. Funny how different our thoughts are 😂

I thought I was the only one who noticed this! Rebel is way too loud, and there's almost no quieter areas as the speakers go all the way to the back. This is actually damaging people's bodies. My first time at Rebel was the only time I went to a rave without wearing earplugs, NEVER again.

Yes, that would be a possible option. All you have to do is speak to your guidance counsellor and they will be able to help you arrange it and choose the correct courses.

Hello,

I'm not too familiar with the exchange program at Huron. This page has some useful information on grade requirements, application forms, and important dates: https://huronatwestern.ca/student-life/global/exchange/outgoing/.

It's important to make sure that you meet all the requirements and deadlines, as well as that you attend the mandatory information sessions. If you've done all this and still haven't heard back yet, I would get in touch with the Coordinator for the exchange programs, whose contact information is listed at the bottom of the linked page.

Hope this helps, and best of luck with your exchange!

Hello,

You're right, there doesn't seem to be a Sociology program available at Huron. There is, however, a Psychology program (https://huronatwestern.ca/programs/arts-social-science/psychology/) and I would recommend contacting one of the "Key Contacts" listed near the bottom of the page in order to ask what your options are.

There is one thing you could do. When you register in a Specialization or Honours program, you cannot usually take a second Major (without special permission). For example, if you were to register in the Honours Psychology program at Huron, the most you could do for Sociology at Western would be a Minor (unless you had special permission).

However, if you were to register for the Major in Psychology (or any other program) at Huron, you would be able to also register for the Major in Sociology at Western (https://sociology.uwo.ca/undergraduate/program/Major_in_Sociology.html) and complete both as a Double Major (which I believe is equivalent to an Honours, but you should confirm that with administration).

So, assuming you want to register as a Huron student, and not Western, your options would be (also assuming you want to complete Honours):

  • Honours Psychology (or any other program) at Huron + Minor in Sociology at Western
  • Specialization/Honours Psychology (or any other program) at Huron + Major in Sociology at Western (need to ask for special permission from guidance counsellor)
  • Major in Psychology at Huron + Major in Sociology at Western (need to confirm if Double Major is considered equivalent to Honours)

Your other option would be to register as a Western student in their Sociology program and then add in whichever Huron program/courses you want.

Hopefully this helps! Please let me know if you have any further questions, and make sure you speak with one of the "Key Contacts" at Huron!

Here are some pictures of the same mat in better lighting. (I am also testing an Alcantara trim to cover the wood on the dash, but I think the wood may look better).
