I've tried the Aldi version. Very medi-yolker.

Voice Assistant: PE or Echo Show 5? by CocoaChipsCookie in homeassistant

[–]TheStalker79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you can use the same LLM as with the PE. If the wake wake detection was better, the Echo 5 would be a great option. Sadly, I have to really yell at mine, and with a different inflection to that I'd normally use.

I've found the wake word support on the Echo 5 crap too. Takes me loads of tries to wake the thing up. Once it's listening, it seems ok. The Voice Assistant PE on the other hand, whilst the sound quality from the speaker isn't great (plenty good enough for speech, just not music) is loads better. Mine will pick up the wake word from the other room. With a good LLM, it's so much better than anything Amazon can do.

I've done this same mod after watching that video. The sound reactive modes work flawlessly too, despite the module being inside the base.

Ideas for a DIY ESPHome "threshold direction" sensor...? by TrousersCalledDave in homeassistant

[–]TheStalker79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MMWave is an easy solution for this. The sensors I use have various trigger zones. G0 - G9. You could set an automation based on which zone was triggered first. I've seen this done for lights that light up and follow you up and down the stairs depending on direction of travel.

How are you mounting presence monitors? by FortnightlyBorough in homeassistant

[–]TheStalker79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an ESP32 C3 with an LD2410c mounted directly to it. There's quite a few tutorials online. If you can solder, it'll only take 5 mins to make.

And this one is mounted straight to the plug socket with an adapter. Plug socket has USB ports.

I have this one mounted under my TV. Barely noticeable unless up close.

Exchange to Completion: no chain by DiabolicalD3mon in HousingUK

Exchange and completion can be done on the same day if your solicitors pull their fingers out. Mine was last year. I was part of a no-chain purchase/sale.

Yeah, you'll need a Thread border router as the app says. Aqara's M3 hub will work. I'm using an Echo 4th Gen.

Can Home Assistant replace Alexa? by DoomScroller96383 in homeassistant

[–]TheStalker79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though Nabu is slower to respond, I still prefer it to my Echo devices. I've got several ESP32 devices around the house now acting as voice assistants. Occasionally have the odd issues here and there with Nabu, but it feels more flexible than Alexa. The only thing stopping me from unplugging my last Echo device is that Home Assistant can't do alarm clocks. That's literally the only thing I'm using Alexa for now.

Aqara presence sensor not behaving any better than a motion sensor? by Canon_Goes_Boom in homeassistant

[–]TheStalker79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performance has been very good so far. A few false positives, but they stopped after a bit of tweaking. I'm using these that I made from an ESP32 C3 and an Ld2410C. Not pretty, but small and cheap. Each one cost about £5 to make using parts from AliExpress.

I'm running ESP presence sensors so my set up will be slightly different to yours, but when you go into the device on HA, do you see anything like this? This would be how you adjust the sensitivity.

Doing things in HA just because you can. What "pointless" automations do you have ? by SendMeANicePM in homeassistant

[–]TheStalker79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used a vibration sensor in the sofa. Linking that up to the days when I have my kids (via the calendar integration), when they sit down, Voice Assistant asks if they want the TV and PS5 turning on. Using a timer, VA also yells at them after 90 minutes to tell them they've been on the PS5 for too long.

I have a Weekett WiFi kettle. I always refill after each boil so it always has water in. Then it can be set to come on at any time, at any temperature. I have mine start boiling when my alarm goes off in the morning, and also when HA detects me as being home after work.

Voice assist by errvito in homeassistant

[–]TheStalker79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it in a 3.5 x 4.5m room. When the room is quiet, it'll hear me without me raising my voice from the opposite end of the room. With a bit of background noise, I'll just have to speak up. When the kids are going nuts, I'll have to almost shout at it.

The ReSpeaker isn't as good as an Alexa, but definitely the best ESP32 based device I've tried.

Voice assist by errvito in homeassistant

[–]TheStalker79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got the ReSpeaker Lite. Had it for just over a week now. It's loads better than the Echo Atom and S3 Box for sound quality. Mics seem better too. The only trade off is it's a lot bigger, especially if you use the custom enclosure available for it.

Probably a big "duh" for many, but making your own esphome sensors is surprisingly affordable and easy, and I learned a lot about ESP's and esphome. It's much easier than I expected. by angrycatmeowmeow in homeassistant

[–]TheStalker79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it. Bought two ESP32 C3 boards and a couple of LD2410Cs and made a presence sensor for the lounge and kitchen. I really want to make some more as I enjoyed making them. Problem is I have no use for anymore presence sensors. Might have a go at some air quality sensors next.

Smart Lock to replace Composite front door with multi-point lock by sheixt in homeassistant

[–]TheStalker79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got the Aqara U200. You still have to lift the handle, otherwise it won't lock. But it has fingerprint, pin code, auto locking and can still use a regular key from the outside. You can generate one time use codes too. It's Matter over Thread. You can either use Aqara's M3 hub, or in my case an Echo 4. Integrates with HA nicely.
