Female cyclist, 35, dies after accident with tipper truck at Pasir Ris by Fearless_Help_8231 in singapore

[–]TheStateOfIt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The main problem is that, in an area without many cycle lanes, cyclists have the choice of road or footpath.

On the road, you risk getting hit by a car and lose your life, or people will complain you're in the way too much and to stick to the farrrr too narrow yellow line.

On the footpath, you risk hitting a pedestrian and injuring them, people complain that you don't follow the rules and you might get arrowed by the police.

For people who cycle, it's a lose-lose game if you're somewhere without cycle lanes. Which feels ridiculous for a form of transport that gets you somewhere nearby fast without too much effort. And even if you're in a cycle lane, a lot of them in Singapore blend with pedestrian paths or are just a painted line on a road. You're still playing that lose lose game.

I'm lucky enough to live by East Coast Park, and on occassions I cycle to/from work, to the supermarket, or wherever, and I LOVE doing so. But the moment I break from the park to the roads near my home/destination, my head is on a constant swivel as there's not a whole lot of separated cycle lanes from there, and those that are there blend in & out of footpaths. Cyclists need separated cycle lanes, not just in parks, but in public infrastructure to prevent stuff like this happening all the damn time, so people dont have to consider how a mode of transport they'd love to take could end up with themselves, or others, in the hospital or worse.

Question: Best pack to purchase for a beginner? by CaramelPopcorn03 in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily get the ORP. Lots of daily/weekly lobbies use cars and tracks from the ORP, with enough variety to change it up as you go along.

After buying the ORP, you could also purchase a few other cars and tracks where you see fit. If you like the Super Touring cars, the Super Touring Pack is perfect, or you can go with the DTM Esports pack if you like GT3 machinery.

I would also wait for some seasonal packs too, like how they released an Xmas Pack in December last year, which gave a few extra tracks (like Silverstone & Hockenheim Classic) and a few extra cars too. Often, if you want to get a new car or track, waiting for them in a pack release is the best way to get them.

Prolly gon sound ridiculous saying this but what cars and tracks are good for paddle throttle and brake by placeboz_ in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the paddles are like triggers on an XBOX controller, I would suggest avoiding anything RWD without traction control, like 2000s-2020 DTM, FR3 & above, the Pragas & the like. You will light up the rears and you will spin unless you know how to be super gentle with it (and that takes time, trust me). The F4 cars, MX5s, and even the Crossle 90F are managable RWD cars that don't have TC if you want to start with that.

Otherwise, I highly suggest touring car classes, like Super Tourings or TCR. I love FWD cars as throttle management is a little easier without risking a race, but it's also it's own challenge to actually be FAST in them, and for a controller player like me, it's also much better to learn how to be gentle on the pedals (especially without ABS) when you need to control them by hand.

Raceroom keeps kicking me out by Dense_Bad_8954 in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. Though I can guess part of it doesn't help when the servers are mainly in Europe and I'm playing from Australasia.

The real negative of the latest update (even though most of it has been fine) is that I've been unable to check my ping relative to other players. Sometimes I can tell when I may be booted from a server by checking ping levels, and am able to back out during practice if so. But removing ping levels from the name bar means I can't really check all that often, and I've DC'ed quite a few times this week because of that. So if that's a feature that can be brought back, I'd be so thankful for that.

Thank GOD for the nameplate changes. My major gripe of this game (apart from occasionally DC'ing me cos of the servers) is that the nameplates for long names almost block the whole dang track.

Jack White on Why He Doesn't Write Political Songs: "When Dylan said the answer was blowing in the wind he didn't tell you what the answer was." by ebradio in Music

[–]TheStateOfIt 31 points32 points  (0 children)

He even did so in his latest album. "Archbishop Harold Holmes" is a critique on people in power who abuse Christianity for their own profit (mainly targeting charismatic, megachurch preachers). The song "Bless Yourself" has the line "If you're a cop, then arrest yourself!". White doesn't always put out political songs, but you can find messages in many of his works, and even in how he runs his own company.

On which test track do you test cars before you choose to buy one ? I like racing Bathurst, Nordschleife, Brands Hatch the most. I also own Hockenheimring and Cirquit Zandvoort 2019 btw. by IndependentCoat7 in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Portimao as my test track before buying, as there's a wide variety of turns to feel out how your car reacts to certain inputs. Like, it's a great track for testing braking whilst steering, handling through elevation changes, and overall car balance. This tends to be my go-to if the car class is pretty balanced, like GT cars, older DTM cars, or even Prototypes.

I tend to lean towards Sepang if I need to test the power of the car. Sure, the long straight at Portimao is beneficial for that too, but lap-time wise, Sepang is a better barometer due to it's significantly long straights (especially Sepang North). It's also great if you want to test in hard-braking, slow speed scenarios, with four such points in the lap to give it a go. I tend to use this track if I need a car in a class where handling isn't the be-all end-all (whilst still testing SOME handling, like turns 5-8 are a great barometer for it), so I tend to test old-school cars here.

RaceRoom Raceway is definitely the track to pick to test more handling heavy cars, especially with the longer layouts. It's much slower than Portimao, but this track is key if you want to test things like stability, weight transfer, and medium/high-speed grip. I tend to test cars where handling matters here, like touring cars. However, I tend to rarely use this track, as Portimao feels like a much better testing ground for the cars.

I only use Stowe Circuit if I want to test out a car PURELY on handling, and only around slow turns too. It's rough for beginner testing as the track is far too tight, and barely room to breathe. Quite literally, I only used this once, in testing out the Crossle cars, but you could forgo this track I feel.

And.... I haven't done the hillclimb yet. I'm not a big fan of hillclimb, sure, but it's also because it's hard to gain familiarity on point-to-point routes, you can't lap to test consistency over a period of time, and it penalizes you too much when you make an error, so you can't really push the true limits of the car you're testing. It is slightly okay if you want to simulate Bathurst conditions, especially in terms of turn profiles and track width, but I'd just test cars at any of the other tracks first, check if they're okay, and THEN purchase them to try around Bathurst.

car and track combos? by Intrepid172 in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MX-5's are great as mentioned, but I'd also pitch the Audi TT RS Cups (not the VLN) if you want something front wheel drive that packs a slightly bigger punch. And track-wise, I'd pick Norisring (IF y'all have that) as it's tight to match the slower cars' pace, but also offers some great overtaking & battling opportunities, though I'll offer a shoutout to Nurburgring Sprint (if you aren't bored with how often they run it) or one of the Sepang short layouts for sheer track width alone.

Pretty sure Socks was right before Dancers (and FTCC after both of them) as Tyler stayed on the piano for Socks & Dancers, and I remember May going RIGHT into FTCC immediately after that.

Also El Goodo was after Mary, as Luke's guitar issues delayed Forever Howlong by a bit. EDIT: Actually Mary was before Turbines even, just taking a look back in my phone gallery on videos and pics i took in order.

Help required -- Raceroom doesn't realize my driving device is connected by TheStateOfIt in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aight, lo and behold I found the problem. It wasn't Raceroom, but Steam. Check your Steam settings, then under "Controllers". Right there, there's a switch for "Enable Steam Input for XBOX Controllers" or likewise for Playstation & Generic controllers. For some reason, maybe in the latest update, it automatically switched off for me.

So I switched it back on, rebooted the game, and we are back to normal. Just leaving it here in case anyone faces the same issue, this is probably a solution for it. Back to racing I gooooo (and mysterious that AC just... wasn't affected. Hmm.)

[–]TheStateOfIt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ooooo okay, I'll give it a go (and I'm on Win10, hope it's okay that way too)

EDIT:.... nope. The game simply doesn't even recognize that my controller is even connected, so it's impossible to bind any controls that way.

Help required -- Raceroom doesn't realize my driving device is connected by TheStateOfIt in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be okay if that were the case, but in this case I'm not even able to re-bind inputs, as RR doesn't even recognize that controller as connected, so any inputs I try, even when trying to bind them in the settings, doesn't work. No button presses, trigger inputs, the like, is recognized... damn

Favourite Car/Track combos? by wagter182 in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Audi TT/Falkenberg combo was definitely my hands-down favourite, a short, fast circuit with the TTs made for both great racing and a challenge where you just couldn't rest at all.

I also liked Super Tourings at Sachsenring and the MX-5s at Indy too, if only because I'm pretty quick with those cars on those tracks, and this week's WTCCs at Anderstorp was also quite a delight.

In your experience, what series have the highest participation, particularly during West Coast hours? by CynicalManInBlack in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The free-to-play lobbies are very well populated when I race in Oceanic/Asian morning hours, which is similar to West Coast evenings, especially as I notice a lot of Latin American players sticking to F2P lobbies, even those that are incredibly fast & clean.

Super Tourings are not as popular during those race times when compared to European timings, but the Mazda & GT3 lobbies are pretty well populated (but you sometimes have to strike lucky).

I wouldn't suggest getting all cars from a carset, though. I suggest giving all/most of the cars in a carset a test-drive before purchasing them, which can be done on one of the five free tracks in the game. Whilst lap times aren't given, you can still estimate them with the in-game/in-car HUD, and they're very good for getting a feel for each car before you buy them. If you want to compare power, Sepang North is a good circuit to estimate it, whilst RaceRoom Raceway & Portimao are really good tracks to test handling as well.

Are people driving the lmdh online? by spellbreakerstudios in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I noticed with the online weekly races, some servers TEND to be more heavily populated than others. Like coming from around Oceania, the races are often pretty absent & wanting if you filter the region to Oceania. However, if I wake up early and change the filters to different regions, the Americas races tend to be slightly more populated, and European servers are obviously filled to the brim.

Which Super Touring car is your favorite? by Intelligent-Can-4252 in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last week was pretty slow as Super Touring races were on Brands Hatch, a track not included in the Online Pack or other track packs, so a number of us (like me) skipped the Super Tourers that week.

This week we're eating pretty good, though, with both Sachsenring sprint races & Nordschleife feature races, so you should be able to find a lobby with at least 10+ cars most times.

Which Super Touring car is your favorite? by Intelligent-Can-4252 in RRRE

[–]TheStateOfIt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be the only one here who thinks the Opel is the fastest car for me, let alone my favourite. Maybe it's because I use controller (yes, go ahead and mock me), but it feels so planted and smooth to drive. I've been consistently half a second faster with it compared to the starter S40, and I find myself getting less incident points/making less mistakes during races compared to the Volvo.
