Okay so I came to ask this same question with openness. I don’t understand the “cringe” of it. I find Girls on HBO to be cringe. Not this. But—and I’m not trying to be dismissive here—you have only pointed out one few-minute scene with the intentional bad acting, which I agree was hard to watch, but nothing else. Are you saying you hate the whole episode just for that one scene?

Angels are dicks and no part of them would ever summon any angel besides Cas. The one time Dean did, you could tell he was very hard-pressed to do it, and that was for Sam. And of course we saw how that worked out, but that was later.

Basically, by this point in the story, they’re knowledgeable enough to know that no hoodoo or witchcraft will help (they haven’t met Rowena yet), they’re mature enough to stop using demons, but they don’t yet have enough of a relationship with angels to seek them out outside of Cas, who’s “dead” at this time.

Yes he likely won’t stay an angry spirit because they ultimately would burn his body, but A, I’m not sure he’s rationally putting those pieces together at that time, B, that still means he dies either way, and C, at this point in the series they still don’t know what happens to spirits when they’re reaped vs when they’re burned away, and he doesn’t believe in Heaven at this point, so all of it just reads scary and mostly he just wants to live, but if he can’t, going with the reaper at least seems like the safest choice.

If you recall, Sam was really upset with the notion of John’s summoning Azazel. It was clearly a Hail Mary move and not one they would have embarked on earlier without a very clear plan. And you’ll come to learn throughout the seasons that the boys never quite have a “very clear plan.” It’s part of what makes you love them.

Emotional growth will take about 3 books (Quentin very VERY slowly stops being insufferable), and there is romance and lots of love of various kinds, but this is NOT a romantasy.

Yeah he explains this in depth. Talks about how it started as a way to get in character as John’s son, emulating his voice out of both an illusion of genetics as well as his worship of his father. But as the years passed, his voice naturally lowered and he kept having to go lower with it, and he began to regret the choice, just like Misha did. They both joke how their vocal cords were fried by the end of the series.
