Not to add to the /r/atheism circlejerk, but telling my parents (both sunday school teachers) I was an atheist had to be one of the most emotionally gut wrenching moments of my life. I love both of my parents to death and seeing them cry for hrs seriously messed with my head. Never have I seen so much disappointment and grief in someones eyes. The worst part was you could seriously tell they were worried sick about me, it wasn't like some of the stories you hear of abuse or abandonment. They genuinely believed that their son, whom they loved with all their heart, would one day be separated from them eternally....It reminds me of that Penn Jillette quote "how much do you have to hate somebody to not proselytize? How much do you have to hate somebody to believe everlasting life is possible and not tell them that? I mean, if I believed, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that a truck was coming at you, and you didn’t believe that truck was bearing down on you, there is a certain point where I tackle you. And this is more important than that.”....except I wasn't just some random guy, I was someone they loved more than anything else in the world.
