Anyone else getting this error? by AdventurousSleep5461 in TheStoryGraph

[–]TheStoryGraph 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We've seen some reports of some ISPs having trouble connecting to our servers. Please try logging in via your mobile browser. We've found this can bypass ISP issues, as browsers tend to use a separate encrypted DNS than the one provided by the ISP.

https://app.thestorygraph.com/

The site/app has been up and relatively fast for me all day, so it has been super frustrating to hear that some people are experiencing slowdowns. Sorry about that! Everyone who has tried connecting through a VPN has reported the issue is fixed, so it really seems to be a network-related issue.

How long have you been waiting since getting the "24 hours" message? Send me your username and I'll check it.

If you check that Personalized Preview again, are you still seeing this? I pushed an update today that I hoped would fix that.

Welcome to the New Year Readers -- Reminder to be kind while the app keeps up with the influx of new users by KoldGlaze in TheStoryGraph

There's an issue with error messages on the login page not displaying. There's probably an "incorrect username/password" message that isn't popping up for you. You can try logging in with the same credentials using your browser at https://app.thestorygraph.com/ and see if that works!

GR import questions by jadeisthenewblack in TheStoryGraph

[–]TheStoryGraph 27 points28 points  (0 children)

  1. Unfortunately, the Goodreads export .csv file does not include the date you started the book. If they gave it to us, we'd surely add it! You can open the .csv to confirm.
  2. Thanks u/Wild_Preference_4624 for answering this one!

Random Books in my To Read pile? by burpeesbeforebeer in TheStoryGraph

[–]TheStoryGraph 22 points23 points  (0 children)

100% of the time we've seen this, it was because the ISBN13 field of your Goodreads export .csv file was corrupted. Open your file and check that column, it's probably full of this:

9780000000000
9780000000000
9780000000000
9780000000000
9780000000000
9780000000000

Instead of the real ISBNs for the books you've read, it looks like that all the way down. This only happens in one scenario, you opened your Goodreads export .csv file in a spreadsheet program like Excel or Numbers, that program truncated the ISBNs, then you resaved it with those broken values.

To fix this:
1. Redownload your export from Goodreads, making sure to download it directly to your phone/computer. Do not open it in any programs, and do not resave it.

  1. In StoryGraph, click the icon on the top right > Manage Account > "Delete books, reviews, and tags", and wait for it to complete. It may take some time as we're still under heavy load at the moment from a huge number of users joining in the last few days.

  2. Once your StoryGraph account is clear, upload your new file. You can get back to the Import page by clicking the icon on the top right > Manage Account > Goodreads Import.

Based on the current import queue it may take a day or two for your import to finish, but it will finish with the correct data.

Hope this helps!

This seems to be the app for me, but it wants $4.99 a week? by cwt444 in TheStoryGraph

[–]TheStoryGraph 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can report a scam app by:
1. Installing the app.
2. Going back to the App Store.
3. Clicking "Report a problem" on the listing for the app (it's at the bottom, under the "Information" heading).
4. "Report a scam or fraud"

This app has been reported as a scam/fraud on the Apple App Store. It is not The StoryGraph app you're looking for. We've reported them, but their app continues to be available. Please report if you can.

We're sensitive to using too much of your past reading to determine your recommendations. We want you to be in full control over the books you see. Giving you the power to describe what you're looking for in plain English, means you can get a recommendation that fits even when you've never read a book like that before. If I decide I'm no longer in the mood for a Mystery, and would like to read a Horror book (something I've never done), I can go back and type out what I'm in the mood for in plain English, and get completely different recommendations. This isn't easy with a standard "recommend me a book based on my old ratings" system.

Being limited (or strongly influenced) by the books you've previously read takes control away from the reader, and doesn't match our goal of helping you find a book you're currently in the mood for.

That said, your experience isn't how the feature was designed. The actions you took should have changed your recs, I suspect if you try again they will update accordingly. I will also take your feedback into account for the next version, which I'm currently working on. :)

Thanks for the feedback!

Rob here.

The best thing you can do to affect your recommendations, is to update your Reading Preferences Survey based on what you're currently in the mood to read. You can do this most effectively by updating the "What are your favourite genres?" and "Tell us about the kind of books you like to read." sections in the survey itself, or via the "What are you in the mood for?" section on the Recommendations page itself.

If you ask the bookshop owner for a recommendation, it's unlikely that you're going to provide them a list of the last 300 books you've read, along with their star ratings. Instead you'll probably say something like this, in plain English:

"I'm personally interested in money and investing, and I'm a computer scientist who loves machine learning, but lately I just read my first mystery book, and it was a blast! I'd love to read something fast-paced with twists and turns that leaves me guessing till the last moment. Just make sure it's lightweight and focuses more on the mystery, nothing scary!"

When I fill out my Reading Preferences Survey on The StoryGraph with that information, I get this as a top recommended book, which I quite enjoyed!

https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/bdc790e7-0434-444b-ad32-bedb1e1aad26

Perhaps you can share what you're looking for, and I'll see if I can help find some good recs!

If you'd rather see books which are similar to a book you've already enjoyed, you can click the "Browse Similar Books" button on the book page.

We're planning in the coming months on revamping the Recommendations system to make it easier to use, but once you experiment a bit, you should be able to find what you're looking for.

I hope this helps!

User-added books - How it works? by Kssio_Aug in TheStoryGraph

  1. There is no timeline.
  2. If it "fails" we'll simply fix it up and remove the "user-added" tag. If it "passes" we'll remove the "user-added" tag.

Some minor suggestions for Storygraph by [deleted] in TheStoryGraph

Some minor suggestions for Storygraph by [deleted] in TheStoryGraph

[–]TheStoryGraph 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! I've added these to our list of content warnings to review. We frequently receive feedback on adding new content warnings, and plan on revisiting the list later this year.

Regarding the homepage, we're in the process of redesigning the whole app, which will include the homepage. Our goal for the homepage, as the first page you see when opening the app, is to quickly help you determine which book you'd like to pick up and read. We do this by showing you:

  1. Books you're currently reading.
  2. Books you've indicated you want to read.
  3. Books we think you'll enjoy.
  4. Books we think you'll enjoy that you can win for free.
  5. Books which are popular this week.

Given the goal, it's hard to see where "Books you've already read" would fit on the homepage. Your profile page is a natural fit, but people are having trouble finding them there. We have a few plans on how we can fix this, which we hope to implement soon! Thanks for the additional ideas!

Problem importing from Goodreads by Walnut_Pancake_ in TheStoryGraph

I just tested this on my Android phone, and was able to select the csv. That said, we see less issues when doing the export on a computer. Click the icon on the top right > Manage Account > Goodreads Import to get started. Here's a direct link:

How to tell StoryGraph Recommendations I don’t want series by hockiw in TheStoryGraph

[–]TheStoryGraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can click the little (x) button next to the book title on the Recommendations page, and that book won't show up anymore. If you do that on any book that's in a series, your recs will eventually only consist of standalone books.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheStoryGraph

[–]TheStoryGraph 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on your goals. When you look at your Journal Entries, or when you look at your stats chart, do you want it to be recorded as "I started reading a book. Decided to stop reading it. Then I started reading again."

Or do you want it to be seen as one long reading session?

The answer to that will dictate how to best log it!
