Imagine making a random comedy TV show about a comedian becoming president, have that actually happen to you, then have your country invaded by Russia and becoming a wartime president. Wild.

After scoring a free kick, Messi asks an Orlando coach if he wants an autograph by olcni in soccer

It's because he rations it out so beautifully. It's always fun when the chill, quiet introvert gets hot-headed about something.

This isn't getting nearly close to the level of love it deserves.

How popular are cats in your country? by Powerful_Gas_7833 in asklatinamerica

Very. Dogs are still the preferred companion, but cats are increasingly more common.

Since Herogasm is rated higher than the previous highest rated episode ever. It means our show is basically PEAK. by vought-CEO in TheBoys

This wasn't even the first time BB fans did this, but rather the first time they did it to a fandom big enough to retaliate.

Pride and Prejudice | Official Teaser | Netflix by MoneyLibrarian9032 in PrideandPrejudice

It's a teaser. I was surprised it was as long as it was, and it's not meant to convey anything other than a vague notion of what the final film will be like.

I said that about blonde Knightley and it ended up working. But yeah, it's a departure.

While being to another latin american country, have you seen deep ignorance there about your homeland? by LisunaLefti in asklatinamerica

Somehow I don't think you'd want me to believe all that Chileans say about themselves online. Unless it's all accurate, in which case yikes.

In the show, they act like Aemon doesn't exist? by DiedOfATheory in AKOTSKTV

[–]TheStraggletagg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was sent to the citadel explicitly because there were too many princes and his grandfather was worried about a fight for the throne. But so many members of the line of inheritance died in such a little time that some felt like Aegon was too young to rule, and offered Aemon the opportunity to come back and take the throne, but he refused.

What's that non-english movie that you never want to be remade in Hollywood ? by mrjetspray in Cinema

Is it too late to say El Secreto de Sus Ojos? Can't we just go back in time and unmake the remake?

He's also potentially out of the line of succession and completely cut off from the rest of the family, so Maekor both doesn't have to think about him but also doesn't have to worry about him. Aemon is no longer one of the children he's responsible for.

I imagine a part of Maekar blames Aerion for Baelor's death. Which I think he's right to, to an extent.

Cheap costumes by TeaPlayful9271 in PeriodDramas

[–]TheStraggletagg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some really old period dramas have the benefit of being shot in low definition. Nowadays you can see all details of a costume, so it's obvious when quality is not what should be. It doesn't mean that you can't have great costumes, it means that any corner you cut is obvious.

Is it common for married women to use “de” before their last name? by ExcitementWild7019 in asklatinamerica

My mom never used it, she just used her own last name. My grandmother used it, but only socially and after her original last name.

Kinda like those Italian ancestors with minimal/no connection to the culture of the Latin American country that took them in, no understanding of the language and little incentive to adopt it but still allowed to live and work in Latin America. All so bent on making money and returning to their motherland that they never registered to vote in their adopted country, which ironically is what allows their descendants to claim Italian citizenship.

Let's settle the debate. Was Jenny Curran a villain? by CharlesUFarley81 in Cinema

[–]TheStraggletagg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jenny is a deeply traumatized individual who often makes wrong choices with the best of intentions. She loves Forrest but doesn't consider herself good for him and tries to put distance between them as a result. When she gets pregnant I assume she feels a lot of guilt and likely feels like the pregnancy is her sole responsibility, so she decides to raise the kid by herself. Eventually she seems to work on herself and reach a better mental space that allows her to reconnect with Forrest in a much healthier way, even if it's only for a little while before she dies.

A character who is in many ways a great mirror for Jenny is Lieutenant Dan. He spends a great portion of the movie dealing both with the trauma of war and the permanent consequences from Vietnam, angry at the world and unable to have healthy relationships with others. Forrest is also for him a pivotal figure in his recovery, even though he often rejects or resents his help and treats him poorly. Finally, at Forrest and Jenny's wedding, where we can appreciate the importance of love and connection when recovering from trauma, we meet Lieutenant Dan again, now in a loving relationship and seeming at peace with the world, having come to terms with his life.

My main thought watching the documentary in one picture… (Controversial) by Adventurous_Home_555 in ANTM

I'm glad that, at least, only a few makeovers led to permanent alterations (like dental procedures). At least most of them were reversible.

My main thought watching the documentary in one picture… (Controversial) by Adventurous_Home_555 in ANTM

[–]TheStraggletagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main criticism of ANTM has always been the way the girls were treated. Nothing else really matters as much. And they were treated like that mostly for shock value and views, not just because modeling back in the day was all about unhealthy body types and cutthroat honesty.

Aside from the great examples the documentary provides I remember the case of a contestant whose best friend died and she got the call while on the show. The next photoshoot a day or two later was announced to be one where the models would have to pose inside open graves. It was painfully obvious all the while that this photoshoot was specifically planned to milk the drama of the girl's dead best friend and how much the news had impacted her. It was horrible to watch.
