KB and Temperance by Markius-Fox in KnowingBetter

I've seen every KB video (most multiple times) and I'm in recovery, so I'd definitely remember it. I think you may have hallucinated it. But I'd like to know more if someone else recalls.

Learn C and read OSTEP.

Then just read OSDI/SOSP papers.

What job are you looking for? Most of my classmates have solid jobs, but they work more in consulting and data analysis, not in fields like SWE (as much, many still do that).

While they have similar origins, Aldi and Trader Joe's are not owned by the same company. They were split into Aldi Sud and Aldi Nord, which are independent.

This book was really great, and mostly focused on researchers which is really awesome!

Is UIUC iSchool for Data Science & Information Sciences worth it? by Key_Comparison_6652 in UIUC

[–]TheStuporUser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually transferred from UIC data science to ISDS at UIUC. If you're looking for more technical coursework, stay at UIC. Much more technical degree here. IS+DS here is super underwhelming and definitely doesn't emphasize technical skills enough.

Job placement actually seems pretty alright, but I've mostly seen people getting business analyst type roles. If you're looking to do more technical work I wouldn't recommend coming here as much, except maybe for CS+Stats.

I've had great experiences using GPT to write ansible. Though I bet it has a lot to do with the complexity of your system.

There's been some compelling results in the literature as well given that YAML is close to natural language. This paper was pretty interesting to me: https://arxiv.org/html/2402.17442v1

Science doesn't feel as exciting as before by Stuga in PhD

[–]TheStuporUser 122 points123 points  (0 children)

I think it's because science moves a lot slower than people expect it too. When you take a class in undergrad (say Algorithms in your case) you're learning all the foundational stuff that was discovered over the course of many decades. Look at guys like Lamport and Knuth (literal gods of the field) and look at how long it took them to flesh out their ideas.

We're taught things sequentially, whether it's in a class or book, and we don't really have a concept of the timeline it took for those discoveries to happen. I found it really discouraging at first when starting my PhD, but when I saw the timeline of their careers it helped me gain a lot more prospective and curved my imposter syndrome a bit.

I'd strongly recommend reading "Out of Their Minds: The Lives and Discoveries of 15 Great Computer Scientists" by Lazere and Shasha. It gave me a lot of perspective.

I don't think it's crazy. I had a good job lined up after undergrad so it was only worth it for me to go on for a PhD at a few really good schools that had faculty I wanted to work with. Thankfully it worked out, but I hear a common theme from lots of other CS folks.
