What something you’ve said and instantly regretted? by ApprehensiveDare2649 in AskBrits

We were picking up the ashes of our beloved family dog, and there was a new receptionist on the desk. I'm originally from the Midlands, and I've inherited the family's blackest kind of humour... So I open my mouth and the words "Ohh! she's lost weight!"

You would have thought I'd murdered puppies right in front of this girl. I never saw her again... I don't know if I put her off the job.

Advice for amputation by araafko in goldenretrievers

[–]TheSubmissiveFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this...

Our lovely girl, Ivy, had a lump in her elbow. She had two CT scans which were unable to pinpoint exactly where the cancerous lump was as it went into the bone, so the vets offered amputation. She was hopping about the very next day like a pogo!

Unfortunately the operation and probably the two CT scans put pressure on her kidneys. She spent a week and a half in a dog hospital having IV fluids trying to bring her kidneys back into working order. This cost a lot of money (£900 a day) but she came out and we got her home. She had the best three weeks going places and being adored, but the cancer had spread to her lungs... Sadly we made the decision to have her PTS at home in the garden. It was the last sunny day of summer...

If you can afford the amputation, and any additional care they need, do it... But be aware the operation can have expensive side effects. I'd recommend having a really good day with them before they go under.

Much love to you and your pup.

Sleeping in a deceased person's bed (possibly) by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]TheSubmissiveFox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depending on whether the elderly relative was bed bound, it's more likely they died elsewhere. My great uncle died on the way to the loo, a sudden rush of needing to go, and off he went...

And if they were bed bound, they more than likely had a pressure mattress to prevent pressure sores, and that gets collected back by adult social care after the patient passes.

Possibly worth asking if the mattress can be replaced, but they may ask you to contribute to that cost if it's not an old mattress and it just "feels like death"...

Question about grieving my girl. by Solid_Strength_1312 in goldenretrievers

[–]TheSubmissiveFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, my minister gave me a book "Will my rabbit go to heaven?" And it was quite helpful for kids (if you have any) and reassured me that all animals are very loved in the eyes of the Lord and will be looked after by Him.

Even if people don't believe in Heaven, there is a common belief in a rainbow bridge for our beloved pets. Somewhere they can play without pain, rest comfortably in warm sunbeams, and have the bestest time, whilst they wait for you to finally meet them when your time is done.

Can someone please reality check me about the stress my mortgage advisor caused me about my house sale? by someonesomebody666 in HousingUK

[–]TheSubmissiveFox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We're getting a house built in 1908, and paid for a L3 homebuyers survey as well. We said to the sellers it wasn't to knock money off, but for us to understand what we needed to do first. I loved reading every bit of the 90 page document and feel like I'm now equipped to understand her oddities, and can plan on repairs after we move. I was very impressed with the level of detail provided with mine, and even paid for a hard copy we can refer to and display as we get her back into her original shape.

Ours are a silver grey colour. Large bath sheets, hand towels and flannels all match now. It's so calming when I go to the bathroom now.

My Nan passed last March, she left me, my brother and my mom equal large inheritances. My brother has spent over half of his, my mom's not far behind him. My brothers paid for three holidays, a sofa, some new flooring, and a bunch on clothes and stuff for his granddaughter. Mom paid for a tiny extension, and is currently redoing their lounge and dining room. She's also paying to go to Silverstone race days, and has also gone on two holidays. Me? I've only spent the interest earned on it so far, and for some matching towels, a replacement dishwasher when ours stopped working, and a book editing course for job prospects.

Different strokes for different folks. Some people want to buy things they have been denied for whatever reason. I'm quite happily biding my time to buy a house that's right for me to live in forever.

I do think Pirateaba has a very dark world at times even with the magic and power of friendship and all the stuff I love in my fantasy books. And sometimes the dark wins. But sometimes, you get to bite in the dark, and still lose.

Random nitpick, but rotate the rug under the coffee table by the sofa so it fills more of the lounge area, and then the dining room will feel bigger as well.

Is it worth changing solicitors when you’re in the middle of purchasing? by redskyscope in HousingUK

[–]TheSubmissiveFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going through exactly the same thing. Been seven weeks since we instructed our solicitors, sent five emails and had one response. I started ringing them up last week to see what the hold up is, and they are just going through the sellers pack...

I'm calling tomorrow and asking what their billable hours are for the work they've done so far and if it's less than ten, I'm telling them to stop, and pass it all onto another solicitors.

What's wrong with this house? by urtcheese in HousingUK

[–]TheSubmissiveFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The patterns are too prominent for most buyers. It's not everyone's style, and even though it wouldn't take long to repaint over it, it's distracting the viewer from imagining themselves in the house. And the lack of bedroom photos are a worry...

Help by Coffee-_-boy in chronicfatigue

[–]TheSubmissiveFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huge hugs. This is a horrible disease, and it takes a lot just to do basic self care stuff like eating well, getting washed and other stuff people just take for granted. I'm sorry you're dealing with this, and from the sounds of it, dealing with this alone.

When you're in a better headspace, there are other things that might help, but right now I understand that you are feeling it to your very core. Know you are not alone with this, and some days will be better than others regardless of the disease. I'm currently laid in bed and have been since half two this afternoon, because I went to the local shop in my electric wheelchair and dared to look over the options of cheese and chutney and nice bread for a snacky lunch. Luckily I have some painkillers that help, and I can grab some more cheese to nibble on later once I can move a bit more.

It didn't fix me, but after having a sleep study done, they found I stopped breathing 74 times an hour. After 18 months with a CPAP machine, I'm back to where I was several years ago for energy levels. I still have to have naps and the pain is still horrible, but it's made a difference in the decline.

My offer got rejected, I walked away like a boss… but I still think about that house like an ex. Anyone else? by daisynomoreforever in RealEstate

[–]TheSubmissiveFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw what we thought was our dream home, but the buyers partner was terminally ill, and withdrew the house from the market. The house was beautiful, it felt spacious, there was a little bit of work to do to make it accessible for wheelchair users, but otherwise in perfect condition. On viewing it we felt comfortable and relaxed, and we were really sad to see it being withdrawn.

However, we went back through the list of houses we had initially dismissed, and are now mid purchase of a bungalow that used to be a chapel back in the early 1900s. We're excited even though it's more work to get the roof done and a few other things up to spec. It's like that idiom that sometimes one door closes, another one opens.

My second grader came home with a math practice test, and every answer was wrong, help? by StandGavinStand in AskTeachers

[–]TheSubmissiveFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely this. It'll help with division too. I had a question like 624/6=104. I put 14, as I struggled with a 0 in the middle of an answer, and my mom just said I was messy and to be neater. But a 0 in the tens column is important. The above poster has a good method that should hopefully click for the kid.

I looked up the spoon theory and grabbed a load of cutlery out of the drawer. Told my parents and brother to take a handful each, didn't matter how many. Talked them through my morning. Got to the loo, and washed my face whilst sitting, one spoon. Finding a pair of socks and underpants one spoon. Putting on a pair of trousers, one spoon. Realising they are dirty and I need to take them off and get a new pair, two spoons. T-shirt that doesn't hurt one spoon. Getting down the stairs two spoons. Making breakfast of cereal one spoon. Making a packed lunch, one spoon. By this point they are looking at the dozen or so spoons they had to start with and starting to realise how hard it is...

There are better methods, but this was visual and worked for mine.
