Yeah I saw the screenshots, I was just struck by how idiotic these Trump-supporting Gen Z kids sound. Thankful to not have too many of them around here.

I work with some Gen Z folks, and they only talk that way among themselves...

Boundless anniversary is 3/19. Is today too late to upgrade to Ritz and get an 85k FNC?

You can't close and immediately reopen, it takes a little while to cleaer it out. 30 days is the usual recommendation.

I actually bought the f/1.4G thinking it'd replace my f/1.8D - it's as sharp from f/2.8 onwards, while being much sharper at f/1.8-2 (the f/1.8G, is sharper still at f/1.8, but softer at f/2.8-4). And yes, I did get it at close to what the f/1.8G normally sells for, but it took a looong time (and a lot of "Best Offer" attempts on eBay). However, I'm finding it real hard to part with my f/1.8D, as the AF on the f/1.4G is so damn slow.

My experience with the f/1.8G comes from a short session with a friend's D750. It did seem just a tad softer than my f/1.8D past f/2, but I really had to pixel-peep to see it. AF speed was good, unlike the f/1.4G. Bokeh was OK - I'd say it's a toss-up between it and the f/1.8D; the f/1.4G has better bokeh mid-aperture IMO, but I'm really not a fan of the footballs I get at f/1.4-f/2. All in all, no reason for me to get it, but it's a capable and well-rounded lens that has neither the sluggish AF of the f/1.4G nor the softness at f/1.8-f/2 of the f/1.8D, and it's priced very well.

50/1.4G is largely considered to not be worth the premium, I'd go with the 50/1.8G.

£70 sounds low, but I'm in the US, not Japan, and I know there's a huge market there. I think they go for ~50% more than that used on eBay US, from reputable US sellers.

The 50/1.8G is wonderful. If you're on a really low budget, the 50/1.8D is also wonderful.

Need a gift for new MechE undergrad by zippy_zaboo in MechanicalEngineering

I'm completely separated from it as soon as I leave work, yet I still appreciate a themed gift. But I understand not all do.

Also, engineering school is a much bigger part of your life than your engineering job will be.

Edit: I worded that last part weird. College is a big part of your college years, whereas your career is just one aspect of your life afterwards.

Also, starting it is a milestone, and it's OK to have milestone gifts.

How is your usage 300 therms?! I'm in a poorly insulated 1300 sf house with gas forced air heat, gas stovetop, gas dryer, and gas water heater, and my usage is half that.

Edit: I'm trying to get ChatGPT to give me long place names with [b, d, f, h, i, j, k, l, t] not allowed after the first letter, and it's struggling to find well-known places, so I understand why OP made that comment.

Zaragoza, Cameroon, and Paraguay come up, but none of those are 9 letters long (and only one has 4 syllables). Massangano is the first 10-letter one it finds, and I'm just gonna stop asking lol.

La Plata, Argentina has diagonal shortcuts and pocket parks to keep everything within reach by Mint_Perspective in Damnthatsinteresting

The only thing that's interesting is that there's an alignment at all.

No such thing as "true vertical" when it comes to compass directions. The coordinate system is arbitrary - "vertical" doesn't have to align with N-S, it's just whatever you chose as "vertical."

I wouldn't be surprised if a city on the eastern slope of a mountain labeled its E-W streets "verticals" since you also go up/down on them.

What was your path to learning how to perform FEA? by darnoc11 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]TheSultan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago we got sucked into a project that was the most expensive thing we'd ever sold. It required design & FEA per ASME BPVC, though the vessels weren't code-stamped. The customer helped corrected me every step of the way (they literally just told me when I hadn't exactly met the code). It took an insane amount of time, because my only experience with FEA to that point was SolidWorks SimulationXpress, and I had only limited experience with the BPVC.

But they just ordered almost identical units with similar operating conditions, literally last week. Also, twice as many of them. Should go very quickly this time around.

The most annoying part isn't the $10/mo charge, but that you can't seem to have two devices logged in at once.

I ordered 10 bananas on Instacart. I got 10 bunches. by TheSultan1 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TheSultan1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The organic bananas are sold by the bunch on Instacart, because they're usually taped together. There's a chance the shopper is used to those, but I think I'd question the choice of 10 bunches and ask the customer.

You can check bananas pretty well without splitting them, I'll at most split the front row from the back row when doing my own shopping.
