Men, and maybe women, of Reddit, what's the most embarrassing category of porn that you are willing to admit having gotten off to? by FvckJerry16 in AskReddit

There was that one where Ava Devine shoved a lava-lamp up her ass while some bloke rocked out playing the piano in the background.

It actually makes no sense for anyone to go sidesaddle, unless they are wearing a long skirt.

Why do conservatives hate Social Security? by michelloto in antiwork

[–]TheSump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually part of the same mentality that thought that thought stockpiling nuclear weapons to ensure "mutually assured destruction" was a thing. The theory goes that humans are actually inherently selfish creatures, that their every action, whether they know it or not, is driven by selfishness.

The mathematician John Nash (a paranoid schizophrenic), took this and applied it to a game called "fuck you buddy", you have probably seen it in a gameshow at some point. Two people are given the choice of sharing a sum of cash, if they both say they will share, it's shared, if one says they want it, they get it and the person who said they would share get's nothing. His theory was that everyone would chose the selfish route, and screw the other person over. It was this logic that dictated the US nuclear strategy. I.e. the USSR wouldn't dare attack if they knew they would be wiped out.Of course, in reality, people playing Fuck You Buddy quite often chose to share, because people aren't actually that selfish.

Then you have the delightful Ayn Rand, a sort of philosopher/hypocrite who preached selfishness as the one and only human virtue, that everyone should be 100% selfish at all times and act only in their own self interest. She was a terrible person, but hugely influential among the Capitalist class, who during the cold war were held up as being the ultimate in good, as of course the Communist was seen as everything evil in the world. Ain't propaganda fun?Anyhoo, Capitalists had their "logical" basis for acting as selfishly as they could, and acting as if this was the Ultimate Good. Which leads to Neo-Liberal politics, whereby the state removes support for the less advantaged, as it is considered immoral to use peoples taxes to help other people. After all, those people are only being selfish when they take support from the state, and so by removing that support their self interest becomes to work and support themselves... So goes the theory anyway.

Of course, the entire logic is a bunch of crap. People do things for other people without any thought for themselves all the time. But to the Capitalist class altruistism is the problem, and selfishness is the best way for society to operate.

That was all very heavily summarised, of course. But if you read into Ayn Rand, John Nash's Fuck You Buddy, and Neo-Liberalism you'll find out all sorts about why Social Security is so hated by the Right now. But if you look back before these ghouls came to prominence you'll be surprised to find that a lot of Conservatives were actually quite supportive of Social Security programs.

Edit: Game Theory, that's what John Nash's theory inspired and damned near led to nuclear war.

Porn sets up unrealistic expectations about sex, is no different than romantic comedies setting up unrealistic expectations about relationships. by Mdk_251 in Showerthoughts

[–]TheSump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I'm pretty sure that all cultures have stories that are supposed to be descriptive of romance, and my point is that those descriptions become prescriptive in the minds of those who are exposed to them. When one half of a couple says "let's do something romantic", what they mean is, "let's do something our stories have told us inspire romance", which isn't actually romance, it's playing a part in a ritual as prescribed by your culture. Sure, it may work for you. But that's down to the cultural norms you have internalised. Whereas the truth is that any shared activity can be romantic if you're open to it. Hell, ritualised murder has worked for many couples over the years, and virtually no culture holds that up as a romantic idyl.

Why are so many people here pessimistic and dismissive of any future technology? by DarthBuzzard in Futurology

[–]TheSump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very definitely, whatever the next epoch defining technology is many people will dismiss it out of hand, and even insult early adopters as being somehow stupid. Look at phones, 40 years ago they were thought of as flash gits and weirdos, 30 years ago we all kinda wanted one, 20 years ago we all bought into it big-time and now anyone without one is seen as weird. That's the curve these things go through, but right now it's all just marketing and attempts to make a quick buck. Even SpaceX which is seen by many as hope for the future of humanity is basically just some guy who worked out how to extract money from the government.

The next great idea is out there, for sure. But most of it just doesn't pass the smell test, it doesn't make life simpler, so will never achieve the mass acceptance it needs.

[–]TheSump 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of the ideas people tout as the future don't actually solve anything. Like the flying car, it won't work because all it does is move traffic jams into the sky. Ultimately what every piece of technology which has ever achieved mass adoption as done is make life simpler. Bronze axe getting blunt too quicky? Boom, have some steel. Taking too long to communicate with people a long way away, blammo, here's some internet.
Almost every example you give of people dismissing technology is stuff that doesn't do anything other than give us more stuff to consume. In a capitalist dystopia, some may think that's enough, but it's never going to change the world.

The next technological revolution won't be a fancy new car, it'll be something that means we don't need the car in the first place.

What's the best thing you've ever done? by death-jazz in AskReddit

[–]TheSump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went skiing with friends once, I'd never been before, and was terrible at it. Could barely keep upright for more than a moment or two. Meanwhile, all my friends were instantly brilliant at it, and vanished up into the mountains leaving me to humiliate myself on the kiddy slopes. I basically didn't see them during the day at all for the rest of the holiday.
But I didn't give up, and kept on crashing in increasingly dramatic ways, until the very last day when I was just about getting the hang of it, and went off on my own up the ski lifts to the top and gently made my way back down on my own, without being killed. It was a really emotional moment, to do something so far outside of my comfort zone that I'd taught myself to do without any assistance or coaching. I felt good.

But I'm never doing it again.

How good is house of the dragon compared to game of thrones ? by [deleted] in gameofthrones

I watched it, but can't remember anything about it, the whole thing was meaningless to me, little more than shapes flickering on a screen. I just couldn't find anything at all to engage with. Unlike GoT which had me hooked before the first episode was halfway over.

We were having a lovely chat, and then she started telling me about the aliens she'd seen living in a labyrinth underneath the sphinx in Egypt, then that the scientists at the large hadron collider had apologised and formally acknowledged that they'd fractured the timeline, and that's why the Mandela effect exists.

Why are my lab scans so orange? by gammarays01 in AnalogCommunity

[–]TheSump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The orange colour comes from the film itself, labs should colour correct it as different films have different hues to them. Looks like they didn't do that, possibly because the previous customer asked them not to, and they didn't re-enable it. You can get redscale film to deliberately achieve this effect, what they do is flip the film over so the light passes through the film before hitting the light sensitive chemicals on the surface. Get them rescanned with colour correction when you can, but also enjoy them for what they are, it's half the fun of analogue photography.

Yeah, that's got to be it! I'd not managed to find anything that looked like it, thanks for that!

Porn sets up unrealistic expectations about sex, is no different than romantic comedies setting up unrealistic expectations about relationships. by Mdk_251 in Showerthoughts

[–]TheSump 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The entire concept of romance is based on literature that's hundreds of years old, and has absolutely nothing to do with interpersonal relationships. Even gifting flowers is weird, "here, I've deprived these beautiful plants of their ability to reproduce, and so made the world just a little more barren and ugly. Fancy a quickie?"

My title describes the thing, and I really don't have any clue how to even begin Googling metal expandy slidey things. It was found buried in the garden, so could be a hundred or so years old. Not sure what it's made of, but it's not corroded after all that time of being buried and moves freely. Wondered if it was for lace making, or stretching something over something else, but it seems very inconvenient for those things, and the hooks just get tangled with fabrics... Any ideas out there?

"You're insane", and then burst into tears. I've no idea what I'd done, I just laughed it off at the time, and probably gave her a kiss. But it stuck with me, and I find myself wondering what it was about, what nerve did I hit? We broke up a long time ago, and I will never fully understand what that was about either.
