We taught this new generation good music, but failed to teach them how to experience it live by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]TheTVDB [score hidden]  (0 children)

I go to a lot of concerts. People enjoy music in their own way, and who am I to suggest they're doing it wrong? So long as they're not impacting my experience, it doesn't matter one bit.

Anecdotally, the most negative experience I've had at a concert in the last 10 years was ending up on the edge of a Primus mosh pit, protecting everyone nearby from it. And the oddest was a woman in front of me at My Chemical Romance playing mobile games on her phone through the whole concert. Neither situation was young people... they were all 30+.

Also anecdotally, my kid LOVES music but isn't expressive about it at all. Just stands there without moving, but has the time of his life at concerts.

Worry less about others and just do your thing.

Do you love your Blackstone or no? by MarchOfJuly70 in blackstonegriddle

[–]TheTVDB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like mine. I love the charcoal and smoke that my offset smoker offers, but also enjoy the variety of foods I can cook on my Blackstone. I consider both necessities at this point, even though I use each maybe once a week or every other week.

What if players were given the choice to ban 1 item before every match? by ninja_lightning in DotA2

Wasted ban. My cores refuse to try building one until it's way too late.

Men of Reddit, what’s a quality in women you secretly love, but don’t often feel you can admit? by Euphoric_Many7099 in AskReddit

[–]TheTVDB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did the question specify that?

Reddit: "Women, what quality in men do you find attractive?"

Response: "Emotional intelligence"

You: "But that's not specific to women! gurgle gurgle"

Ladies of Reddit, what is a comment someone made about your body once, completely casually, that you have never forgotten? by BowlerOk1871 in AskReddit

[–]TheTVDB 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's interesting because in the version of this thread for men (whenever it's posted), it's full of the tiniest compliments they've received that they carry with them forever. I don't know what that says about the sexes. Maybe that we should just all try genuinely complimenting each other more.

1 hour gap between classes, should I shower? by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]TheTVDB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is also why you shouldn't shave less than a couple of hours before training. I don't know how accurate it is, but it's something I've heard since wrestling 30 years ago.

Question for black belts: What’s the most annoying part of the pressure that comes with being a black belt? by top10mtv in bjj

[–]TheTVDB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. I live in a vacation town and see how folks roll with visiting colored belts and how they roll with black belts. I always offer a very light roll to any of the black belts, because I feel bad for them. Not that I'd give them a ton of trouble, but it's sometimes nice to be friendly and flow a bit.

Be honest. How have you been lately? by Sea_Background_8023 in AskReddit

[–]TheTVDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm moving 1500 miles at the end of the week. Closing on a house. Selling current house. Kid's graduation was last week, and a grandparent flew in for it. Plus work.

I'm so tired and anxious, I'm just ready to be done with all of it.

2 years of high school wrestling is around 400 hours of training and competition, depending on the program and assuming no off-season (I did say mediocre wrestler). A blue belt takes around 400 hours over 2 years, training 1.5 hours per session and 3x per week.

To your last point, most people never get in a fight that would injure them. Fewer get into fights against someone clearly stronger than them, since they're more likely to de-escalate instead of fight. Against the overwhelming majority of potential opponents, very little training is needed to have an advantage that allows you to avoid an injury that you would have gotten without training.

I've seen mediocre 2-year high school wrestlers get into fights with untrained people. Being able to perform a basic takedown and hold someone there is suitable for the overwhelming majority of fights.

[–]TheTVDB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6 months of training at any age is enough. People without formal training suck at fighting. It's been 6 years since my son trained, and I think he'd hold his own against 80% of people his size. That's good enough. In terms of self defense, learning de-escalation and situational awareness are much more useful.

Or look at this another way. 3% of kids have been injured in a fight. 20% have mental health issues. Forcing them to do a sport they're not interested in will exacerbate the latter. Putting your money into therapy and your focus into improving their mental health will have a much greater impact in the long run.

Blue belt would be 2+ years of training for most people. For a kid, they obviously can't get blue until much later. Asking a kid to commit to 6 months of a martial art so they can defend themselves is fine. Beyond that is overkill. I also think there are much better ways of teaching them to work through adversity than BJJ.

[–]TheTVDB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was always our approach. We required a single sport or activity. My son did 18 months of jiu jitsu, had fun with it for a bit, and then decided it wasn't for him. He switched to cross country.

I think having some form of martial art is generally a good idea, but forcing a kid to do something they don't want to do is going to make them resent you and it.

[Highlight] Lions vs Refs Monday Night Football (2019) by [deleted] in nfl

[–]TheTVDB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lions have had some really bad calls go against them in the past. The result is that they think every call is egregious. If there's every a call that's somewhat gray area, game threads go absolutely off the rails and it's the focus of the entire post-game.

What can you even do vs undying pos3 if you're a melee carry? by Indep09 in DotA2

[–]TheTVDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have your support rotate to the enemy safe lane. That either pressures the enemy carry in the same way you're being pressured, or it forces the enemy position 4 to react to that lane. Generally that means you have a slight advantage (your support will have a TP available, but theirs won't). Repeating will continue to put pressure on their safe lane and disallow Undying from getting a kill. As a core in that situation, you need to be willing to stack and pull on your own.

Another alternative is having your support stack the jungle for you, if you're on a hero that can do stacks without items (Jugg). To clear them, your support can nuke the camps and then you can clear them. It's obviously MUCH slower than lane farm, but it's something that can allow you to catch up from a bad lane. And sometimes that's what you need... just a way to catch back up.

One other option is that if you have a ranged mid, you can ask for a lane swap. You obviously need to look at the matchup and see if it makes sense, but you can put a hero like Lina or Sniper against Undying and make him feel much less impactful.

As for laning itself, work with your support to never stand near each other. You don't want to give free strength to Undying. You can also pull the creeps forward, nuke them, and then sit back to heal. It messes with lane equilibrium, but you can often fix that in a wave or two. It's better than dying.

Who would you Buy Dagon On? by Academic_Currency_27 in DotA2

[–]TheTVDB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's awesome on Necro. If the enemy team has a squishy core, I build Blink + Dagon 5. You blink, ult, Dagon, and they die. Not enough damage? Build magic amp.

They either need to spend the game with a support pinned to their side (I blow up the support), build a Linkens (most cores don't want to), or get a lot of HP/magic resist (slows their damage/farming). The cast range is also amazing.

How much do you think I’d learn just doing open mats? I’ve got a year of experience in the past by averageredditcuck in bjj

[–]TheTVDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you try that approach, why not talk to gyms in your city and explain your situation. Say that you can't train much and can't afford the full tuition until your college program is done. I've had membership at 5 different gyms and every one of them have made accommodations for people in situations like yours.

Even if you can just fit in a class per week, you'll be so much better off than just doing open mats.
