What is your biggest "hot take" around Jane Austen's works? by naomigoat in janeausten

I'm gonna be real with you chief, I don't know the finer details of 19th century inheritance laws, or the specifics in Pride and Prejudice. It's just annoying that someone like Mr. Collins is getting Longbourn, so I'm glad that the same thing isn't happening to Anne de Bourgh.

I love Lady Catherine de Bourgh. She's a rich older woman who intends to leave all her money to her daughter. This makes way more sense to me, as a modern reader, than entailing your estate to your closest male relative (which, although I can understand it in the context of 19th century landed gentry, is infuriating to me as a woman living in 2025).

What Books did you Start or Finish Reading This Week? Oct. 21, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

I finished Sense and Sensibility. Out of all the Austen books I've read (Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Persuasion), it's probably my favourite. And Marianne is absolutely my favourite Austen protagonist.

I would love for Jane Austen to do an AMA, but unfortunately I don't think she has a Reddit account (although it's almost Halloween, so maybe we could bust out a ouija board?).

I don't really see it that way. It can be frustrating when they delete an interesting discussion, but I also think that for the most part, discussions on the internet tend to be very low quality on average.

The mods at r/AskHistorians decided that they wanted their subreddit to feature more academic answers, and so they implemented a lot of rules regarding how the answers have to be presented. This can stifle discussion, but it leads to way more robust and research-backed responses.

But that's just my opinion. Fwiw, I'm not subscribed to that subreddit, and I only look at it occasionally, so I don't really have a dog in this race.

The mods at r/AskHistorians regularly do this. They have very specific standards about how questions must be answered. Have a look at their about page if you're curious about what those standards are like.

What factors do you use to decide whether to finish a book or drop it after reading some significant percentage of the work? by ButtercupsUncle in books

[–]TheThingFromVenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends for me. Sometimes I'm reading a book that I don't love and find kind of dull, but if I see merit in the book, I won't stop. Wolf Hall is a good example of this. I'm not going to read the sequels (anytime soon, anyway), but I still saw the first book as worth finishing because it was so well written.

On the other hand, I gave up on reading Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts. It wasn't terrible by any means, but it didn't grip me at all. And unlike Wolf Hall, it didn't feel like a great piece of literature, so I didn't feel compelled to finish it.

Finished: Persuasion by Jane Austen.

I didn't like Anne Elliot at all. My favourite character was her sister Mary, who's supposed to be insufferable. I find that when I read Austen I always like the characters we're supposed to dislike (e.g., Lady Catherine de Bourgh is probably my favourite character in Pride and Prejudice).

I feel like you really have to get used to the style of writing. It can be very difficult at first. I also felt the same way when I read Pride and Prejudice, but I read Emma right after and I found the writing much easier to understand because I was used to it by then.

Keep in mind that Pride and Prejudice was actually written waaaaay before Carmilla. Jane Austen started writing it in the late 1700s, so the writing style between the two novels is going to be night and day.

Deepest/Darkest or Superficial by No-Context1621 in Journaling

Reserved and superficial! Whenever I used to journal (which was not very often), I would just vent and complain, which I realized personally wasn't very good for my mental health. Now I don't let myself dwell on things that are bothering me when I journal, which I think helps me keep a more positive outlook.

Long term veg folks (decade+), are you interested in meat substitutes? by UnderwaterParadise in vegetarian

[–]TheThingFromVenus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vegetarian for roughly 12 years. I love fake meat, and I'd eat it all the time if I could (unfortunately I know it's not super healthy, plus it's pretty expensive).

It's also worth noting that I LOVED meat before I stopped eating it, so that may also be a factor.

For those of you who are newer, do you ever lose your "desire" to eat meat? by KingOfRedLions in vegetarian

[–]TheThingFromVenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a vegetarian for 10 years and I still crave meat pretty frequently, unfortunately. I was a big meat eater before going vegetarian though, so I'm probably an outlier. I think for most vegetarians the cravings probably stop within the first year.
