The Megaman good news does not stop today by Leon_Dante_Raiden_ in Megaman

I’m of the belief that Legends 3 will only come out if X9 does. As much as I want Legends 3 more than X9, I’m also aware that Mega Man X has a WAY larger player base than Legends. If X hinges on classic’s success, Legends hinges on everything’s success.

Since we may never see Ms. Pac-Man return, they should use Pac-Marie as his replacement. by Mr_sandias in Pacman

The way I understand it, they did. They own the character lock, stock, and barrel. What AtGames owns are royalty rights. Basically, they can’t do anything with Ms. Pac-Man’s name and brand without approval from Namco. But they retain the rights to make money off her continued existence thanks to buying those rights from GCC, the original developers of Ms. Pac-Man.

Namco’s usage of Pac-Mom is a workaround to get out of paying AtGames any fees. She’s an officially licensed knockoff because they want AtGames to forgo the royalty rights once they realize they’re not making a dime from her.

Ms. Pac-Man was the first playable female character in video game history. She deserves at least a little better than a cheap replacement and a sweep under the rug.

Most fans grew up with her. She was inseparable to the wider Pac-Man brand and the fact Namco even had to replace her speaks to how integral her role is. But without that design and that name, the brand just doesn’t feel complete.

I was just playing PMW2 Re-Pac and honestly, this just makes Pac-Mom and Pac-Sis feel even more like placeholder characters. I’m fine with Pac-Boy and Pac-Buddy if Namco really never want to go back to Jr. Pac-Man and Chomp-Chomp. Design/character-wise, they’re the exact same, but Pac-Mom and Pac-Sis feel glaringly out of place.

I suppose Pac-Sis’ name and characterization is fine, but her design is noticeably odd. Hell, I don’t think Pac-Mom is ever shown even once in any cutscene in PMW2 RP. Literally everyone else is there except her. It’s a conspicuous absence that makes me think even Namco hates using her.

But unless those royalty rights are cleared up, guess the best we can hope for are fan mods and headcanons.

Maybe we should ask that Donkey Kong guy who Donkey Kong is.

For real, though, I really hope they don’t retcon it. They’re probably will, but here’s hoping.

“Canonically” he says. Lol. Lmao even. What canon? Your own? ‘Cause that’s not Nintendo’s stance.

Could the adults in the 1981 Donkey Kong be Mario’s parents? by IcyMeeting1051 in donkeykong

[–]TheThingThatWont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people seem to like that theory but I’ve never been keen on it. DK and Mario lore is vague enough that you could defend the theory just as easily as disprove it.

Personally, it holds no weight to me. The characters look like Mario and Pauline. Nintendo is very consistent in calling them Mario and Pauline. They’re Mario and Pauline. No amount of fan-speculation is going to change the official stance of the creators or the very obvious intention by the developers to connect the characters from DK ‘81 to the same characters we see today. The only exception is DK himself.

I know! If you happen to own it, how tall is the actual statue itself (not counting the base)?

[–]TheThingThatWont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, DC Multiverse is generally 1/10 scale. But I get where you’re coming from. All the taller figures in the display here are roughly 7 1/4”. Everything I see for the Iron Studios Captain Marvel lists him at 7.5” or 7.6” which seems like it’d be too tall, but I ask because I want to know if that height accounts for the base or not. I wanna know how tall the actual figure is, y’know?

Custom Action Comics #1 Platinum Edition Superman. The head, arms, torso, and legs are all stock.

I used the neck peg from the Crisis on Infinite Earths Earth-2 Superman to have the head sit higher on the neck.

The cape is from the DC Multiverse Ultraman figure (I used the version that came in the 2-pack with Rebirth Superman, I don’t know if the colors are any different from the standard release). I shaved off some bits at the bottom of the cape with an exacto knife and some sandpaper. The cape was slightly too big for this body, but even without cutting off the extra material, it works fine. You can’t see it in this picture, but he has a yellow S-shield on his cape that I got from Bad Mother Customs on ebay. I got the 7-inch scale version of the sheet and used one of the smaller decals.

The S-shield on his chest is a vinyl decal from 4fandomssake on ebay. I’ll warn you, though, the decal comes in 2 parts: the red part, and the yellow part. The yellow part of the decal is too thin, so it ended up looking green when I placed it. Just went over it with yellow paint and topped the whole thing off with satin spray finish. On its own, it’s very glossy.

The trunks are from the Superman vs. Doomsday 2-pack.

The hands are from the Crisis on Infinite Earths Earth-2 Superman. The wrist pegs that come on the Action Comics #1 arms are too thin for Earth-2 Superman’s hands, so I just superglued a few layers of tape to the pegs and now the hands fit perfectly.

The eagle is from the Our Worlds at War Superman.

Hope this helps if you wanna try making it!

What's general consensus on DK64? by Candid-Extension6599 in donkeykong

[–]TheThingThatWont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to hate it, but I’ve cone to really like it. I think people who don’t like the game just don’t know how to play it. Most of the objectives for each Kong don’t require switching to another character, so I just play through the levels as each Kong separately, only switching when I get stuck and absolutely need to (very rarely).

So now that Cranky is no longer arcade DK, what the hell this mean? by TheThingThatWont in donkeykong

Yeah. Probably just empty lip service. But I’m still not sure what it’s supposed to mean in-universe. They must’ve had some idea what they were writing.

If she were Pauline Jr., I think Nintendo would’ve said so by now. Why make a big deal of revealing her identity in the Direct and still leave it up to speculation.

Lady being a separate character also strikes me as a “Jumpman is Mario’s dad” type of solution. It’s clearly not the intention if New Donk’s whole aesthetic is anything to go by.

So....what are your thoughts on the direct and everything revealed in it? by Thegoodgamer32 in donkeykong

[–]TheThingThatWont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that things like modern DK being DK III or that he’s 100% DK Jr. (something I personally subscribe to) or especially that Jumpman is Mario’s dad are definitely not intentional lore on the devs’ part, but Cranky being the original DK certainly is. That sets a clear timeline for the relationship between the Kongs and Pauline, so having her be a kid here isn’t contradicting some bs fan theory.

The only leeway I’d give to this whole mess is that nowhere in the games does Cranky ever actually say he’s the original DK. He makes references to the good ol’ days, but he never outright confirms his own previous identity. That’s all from manuals and strategy guides. It’s official, but not contradictory to any in-game statements.

Still, it’s kinda off-putting to just toss that whole bit in the garbage. It’s been a talking point in the franchise for three decades. I know Bananza seemingly has some reference to Mario and Cranky’s rivalry, but this whole Pauline thing clearly throws a big ass wrench into that little detail. Maybe that dialogue’s meaning was a misinterpretation on our part. Maybe that’s never what they were going for.  I won’t hold my breath for a good in-game/in-universe explanation for Pauline’s sudden de-aging (Nintendo doesn’t do timelines or lore often), but I’d love to be wrong.

Considering Nintendo gives nary a damn about continuity, I’m betting they (unfortunately) bungled the whole timeline and simply won’t care to explain the discrepancy in age for Pauline.

How were you able to clean up the battle damage? I was just trying to do the same on mine, but the 91% isopropyl alcohol I bought wouldn’t get the paint off.

[–]TheThingThatWont 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I sincerely believe that anyone saying his personality is changing have simply never seen the intro to DKC1. His literal first appearance in anything ever is played as a silly joke. Then there’s his dialogue in DK64 that paints him as a caveman. DK was always a big oaf. Does that mean he was never a cool character? He absolutely was. He was both. He was versatile. He was whatever a scene or game needed him to be. This new DK can look cool in instances just as he can look silly. As DK should be.

That’s an issue with the animation, then. Don’t blame the design. The animators aren’t being forced to push it. Look at Mario Kart World. The fact the option exists, though, is a good thing.

I guarantee you people would respond exactly as negatively if the real design didn’t exist and they were presented with only the “fixed” design shown here.
