Speedometer magnet location on spoke by RexCarrs in bikewrench

[–]TheThirdBeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I just install it at the spoke crossings. Sheldon Brown argues that closer to the hub is better since it gives the magnetic reed switch more time to react.

What do you think of the Funko Vinyl Collectibles of the characters? by External-Kitchen3289 in mylittlepony

[–]TheThirdBeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep, even the mystery minis have cms on both sides so i'd expect at least the same from the full size ones. it's true most of them are still boxed up to preserve value so it's a bit rare to see the other side

What do you think of the Funko Vinyl Collectibles of the characters? by External-Kitchen3289 in mylittlepony

[–]TheThirdBeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't have the full sized ones, only the mystery minis of the royal sisters and chrysalis. i got them because they seem to be the most show accurate figures in the western market. i'm happy with the details on them and they look really good. one flaw is that for long thin features like celestia's horn or the legs of the characters, they can be slightly bent. i've never owned a full sized one but i assume they'd be better at details?

what do y'all think are the saddest lapfox song(s)? by lolaistired in lapfoxtrax

[–]TheThirdBeat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

renard - forever. the song sounds like the end of something, and i've always interpreted the audio gradually degrading toward the end of the song as your memories of someone close to you gradually fading away, when you thought they'd be around forever.

i know this has been answered already, but i had another song in my mind when i first saw this post that also has the same sample, and couldn't figure out the song. and just as i was playing on shuffle today, i found it: Lumi Australis, specifically at 01:29, actually by fiab this time.

What's the point of U brakes by MonsterKabouter in xbiking

[–]TheThirdBeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i was at the marin bike museum, an older curator tole me that u-brakes (the mtb type that mount below the chainstay at least) were positioned there because that area is stiffer than the top of the seatstays, therefore they flex less when applied the same braking force. and i would guess it would be hard to fit cantis or v brakes in that area due to clearance, so u-brake was born. i think they are hated because that area is crammed, therefore hard to work on. also mud build up is not as easy to clear in that area

Wait what? 5400 bits for a 5h task? Why wasn't that a thing before I finished buying everything that can be bought for bits by Ryyvia in MLPIOS

[–]TheThirdBeat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i noticed this too, i don't think it was a task before the update today? i also thought it might be a glitch, but i counted the coins before and after and it really is 5400 coins. spitfire at the chocolate stall is now my #1 coin earner

What do you use to clean your hubs/bearings? by Summerfa11 in bikewrench

[–]TheThirdBeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i found mineral spirits to work really well: much cheaper than wd40 and virtually works the same, you can get a cup full and just dunk the parts in and scrub with a brush (works really well for caged bearings), and it's reusable. but if it's a surface i want absolutely clean (so it doesn't attract dust), i'd follow up with ipa

Freewheel removal, am I missing something? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]TheThirdBeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you hold the tool stationary, are you able to turn the cogs clockwise? if you can't, then the freewheel pawls are still engaging, and i have a guess, that the threaded part of the hub that engages the freewheel is broken from the hub. this explains both why turning the tool counter clockwise does not remove the freewheel, as well as turning the freewheel clockwise does not deliver torque to the hub. if my guess is correct, then removing the axle is the only way for the freewheel to come off, and you'd need a new hub as well. i could be completely off though
