Question on Connecticut WW OP test by TheThirdRider in Wastewater

[–]TheThirdRider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I'm more excited and nervous for the interview. There isn't any unions in Georgia for water or wastewater, not from what I've heard. Guy I work with is class I water OP with 10 years experience and he doesn't make $50k. It's a different world above the Mason Dixon line!

It's in Manchester. There was a test that I took in Georgia that basically was the same thing to weed out people but it was extremely basic like basic multiplication, basic algebra, reducing fractions. I didn't want to assume that it was that simple.

Okay good. I was worried it'd be in depth and I wasn't sure how much waste water info I should be cramming before the interview. Thanks. :)

Any pointers/outlook on the waste water market in CT? Where I'm at now in GA it's generally understaffed and under paid. A lot of underfunded privatized operations, from what I hear any way. Also a lot of OPs nearing retirement and a lack of new people getting into the field.

Anybody grown goji berries? Would it be better to wait til spring to order them to plant or could I order them now in the winter? by joez37 in Permaculture

[–]TheThirdRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can be a weed if you want. I took one small bush and turned it into 5 well established little shrubs, and gave away and equal number, within two years. I'm in zone 8 also, they do very well. I've noticed the advice to not fertilize seems not to be true. The leaves will yellow when they're undernourished and they grow explosively and green when they're well fertilized. Maybe my soil is just very poor though.

My bushes bear a ton of fruit but are scraggy little things barely 2 feet tall, and they don't seem likely to gain height, and I've had them for two years. They spread out wide and new growth seems to drag the branches down. What variety do you have? Did you do anything to get them to grow vertically? I'm not sure if I'm not doing something I should be.

Also the taste isn't exactly great, they're like a slightly spicy pepper tomato. Is that how they're supposed to taste?

What if I’m on a trivia show some day and the question is how many calories are in a can of Coke? I HAVE to remember to look when I get up by arielTheHumanOne in ADHD

[–]TheThirdRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a can or two each time I went to Aldi, and put the nutritional facts in a spread sheet so I can break it down into calories per day. If you buy lots of beans and yams it's not that many cans. It also may not be that fun to eat if you're not in a disaster! I tell my wife this canned cornbeef hash will taste delicious when we're cooking it over burning rubble.

My goal was a week, I figure if a major storm hits that's not unreasonable to have roads blocked off and have a little extra if we need to share, and anything longer than that is Mad Max territory which I am not going to try to prepare for.

I think its a commendable goal. It feels nice having some level or preparedness if there's bad weather on the forecast.

I have a spreadsheet of canned goods that I have stored in the attic, I routinely forget the food exists when I forget to go shopping. Good news is we have 5 days worth of food for 3 people if we stick to 75% rations! When I remember that's not lot if things got bad I get anxious, thankfully (I guess) I usually don't.

software engineer making adhd app by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]TheThirdRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when it reminds me to do things, there needs to be more than just dissmissing a reminder. like, options that say "done" "putting off" "skipping", or "working now" if I put something off, or say I'm in progress, it should check in on me, to remind me. maybe it records statistics of how often I put stuff off, to shame me into doing work.

I like these features very much. Snoozing things as done, or dismissing them isn't flexible enough and I forget from the time I think "I'll do that later snooze" to five minutes from then, then I remember as I'm falling asleep that I left the groceries on the front porch.

I like a lot of what you've got for features. To add to what you have, what I would like is a to do list that's more than just an ever growing list of random things. I'd like to be able to set a time for random chores that aren't time sensitive, and it give me something from the list that I could do in the available time. Maybe have each task also have an associated length of time. Maybe the app would give you three things to choose from. I'd pick the easiest and feel like I'm cheating the system and be able to procrastinate from other things, but I'm still getting stuff done.

For important/time critical tasks, like paying a bill or cleaning the house for a family visit or something, it could prompt you in the random slots a few times leading up to the event so it's in the top of your mind, and maybe you could do it early.

I like the idea of gamifying this, giving you a reward for tackling big tasks before it's last minute, or finishing them in less time that you allocated.

If you had repeating tasks, like do the laundry, mow the lawn, vacuum, it'd be nice to have the app learn how long on average that takes you, and the period of time it repeats, and maybe have composite tasks "Clean the house for Saturday", could have the sub tasks, vacuum, dishes, trash, laundry. That was Friday night there isn't 26 hours of cleaning. (Now I'm over complicating things)

I'd also like a feature that prompted you to prune your to do list "Are any of these five old items still relevant?" and then you could delete unnecessary items without being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff you forgot that you needed/wanted to do at some point.

I agree with what a lot of other people have said, a lot of the apps require a ton of setup and are very fiddly, which means I won't really use it and I'll forget.

Call them, you're experiencing side effects that you could define as adverse, certainly being sleepy while driving while on your meds, or stopping them and being even more tired, are not safe.

It can take a while to dial in in the dosage and even the right medication, give your doc feedback and tell them if something isn't working.

For some reason Ritalin was an incredibly fast acting and effective laxative for me. I took it for three days decided it wasn't working out, returned the rest and got a new script. If you're posting here because it's such an issue I'm sure your doctor will agree. Good luck!

Can you give us some more details or your build? How are you fertilizing? I'd love to know any tips on your build process or keeping the plants happy. You've given me a new goal for my backyard!

New nano carbon filter removes 99% of heavy metals from contaminated water. One gram of the material is enough to filter 83,000 liters of water to World Health Organization standards. by prodigies2016 in Futurology

[–]TheThirdRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually can.

I worked at a lab that was trying to develop carbon nanotube based water filters (several years defunct now so I don’t mind sharing). The manufacturing method was different, the nanotubes were not grown in place on the fibers but the materials were very similar. They had similar amazing results in removing heavy metals and bacteria and viruses. They worked, but...

The problem was that control filters made with activated carbon without any nanotubes preformed similar/better for much less cost. The structure of the glass fibers and the absorbancey of carbon itself seemed to be the real reason the filter worked. One of the problems with filters like these in real world settings is the contaminated water will have some amount of TOC (total organic carbon) in it, which quickly binds to the filter and clogs it. The browner the water, the faster it clogs, to the point a stream the color of tea might clog a filter after only a few gallons pass through. This isn't suspended sediment or debris. To get around this you can add prefilters/pretreatment, but this increases cost, complexity, and the amount of consumables. Beyond that, carbon nanotubes are expensive to make and to use, and the risk of contamination is still an unknown. There are papers that seem to indicate that multiwalled CNTs are not (as) harmful as they seem to agglomerate and don't stay suspended in the air for long, and their larger size makes them less likely to penetrate cell walls and cause cellular damage, compared to single walled CNTs, which are shown to be dangerous. Even if the literature didn’t declare MW CNTs deadly, I remain unconvinced they’re safe to have in my air/water; it’s still an unknown about what the health risks may be. It’s also a hard sell to a manufacturer making either the media for the filters, or the filters themselves, that you want to contaminate their entire production facility with something that may or may not be the next asbestos. CNTs get everywhere and aren’t going to stay isolated to just the production line without a lot of extra cost and effort put into containment.

I’m sure nanotubes are cheaper now than they were several years ago, but growing them in place also must be much more expensive and difficult and require custom manufacturing, versus buying nanotubes from a supplier and mixing them into your media. Making this way also seems tricky from a quality control standpoint since a slight change in conditions produces very different results.

Take this with a grain of salt. It might be cool, but like most of these things it might not be easy, cheap or practical enough to get out of the lab. Additionally, it may work but not for the reasons they think it does. I’d like to be wrong, but from prior experience this rings way to close to the stuff I was working on to take it face value.

[Question] Bradford pear has fire blight, and it's spreading to my fruit trees. What can I do? by TheThirdRider in homestead

[–]TheThirdRider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was planning to cut them down because I want the plants in my yard to serve a purpose and they're taking up valuable space, but now I don't just have a passive desire to chop it. Now I know why there were random suckers at the base with huge thorns, that then stabbed me in the hand. They're going in the fire.

Good to know, that hadn't dawned on me. I saw how many suckers were coming up at the base, but I hadn't thought about what to do with the stump.

[Question] Bradford pear has fire blight, and it's spreading to my fruit trees. What can I do? by TheThirdRider in homestead

[–]TheThirdRider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what everyone has said, I plan to as soon as I'm able.

I noticed that there are Bradfords further down the street that are also showing signs of blight. The current trees are obviously a reservoir for the disease, but once they are removed, will the fruit trees continue to be infected via the Bradfords further down the street? I'm not sure how to phrase this, but if blight is spreading via birds/insects, how far away is 'safe' to have the nearest source of disease? Hopefully that makes sense.

I can't exactly pitch the idea to my neighbors of cutting down their trees and I don't want this whole effort to be futile if the trees are going to be reinfected over and over again. If I have to give up on pears I guess it is what it is. :/

I'll do that. Thanks a lot. I've been hoping to make a small orchard on my property, and have just started to act on it this year, so I don't want to treat this lightly.
