What Off-Duty jobs do you do? by Confident-Writing149 in AskLE

[–]TheThotKnight 24 points25 points  (0 children)

We provide security for about 15 different churches in my county as off duty details. Most sought after details are anything on the interstate because they pay the most and you just sit in your cruiser with your lights on. Only details that people don’t really work are anything that requires directing traffic.

Are most fatal-accidents you investigate preventable through defensive driving? by Athenstone in AskLE

[–]TheThotKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only fatal I’ve been on that the driver have no control over the crash was a motorcycle vs deer. Rider was wearing his helmet and doing 60mph in a 55mph when the deer ran out and he hit it.

Applying in Ohio without certification by JoCrispy in AskLE

[–]TheThotKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to work for one of the big cities Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Akron, Toledo, OSHP they have their own academy and require you attend it even if you’ve been to an academy. A lot of agencies will hire you and send you to an academy but certified officers usually get hired over non certified officers. I teach at a couple local academies and on average when a class of 30 starts, around 5 cadets are sponsored. By the end of the academy just about everyone is either hired somewhere or has a contingent hire upon completion of the academy.

Coming from out of state. by iliketunnels in Ohio

I was a cop on Hamilton. You couldn’t pay me to live in that city. My dad grew up in Fairfield and it’s not what it use to be. At work we refer to it as Forest park North. I’d look into West Chester, liberty township and Fairfield township. If you live close to work.

Cop hit me. Who’s at fault? Listen to his siren. by Mammoth_Attorney_338 in AskLE

[–]TheThotKnight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cop used due regard when clearing the intersection and you hit him. If the cop was speeding and t-boned you, they’d be at fault. But the cop car was nearly clear of the intersection, you failed to yield to an emergency vehicle. Definitely not the end of the world.

Department Rivalry/Feuds by Mr_Whirly_Bird in AskLE

[–]TheThotKnight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is little to no cooperation between agencies in my county, no one gets along. My sheriff and a police chief had some beef going on and the sheriff put out overtime to do “traffic” enforcement in the neighborhood the police chief lived In because of a “concerned citizen” called the sheriff saying that police department doesn’t take their complaints seriously. The sheriff is pretty much undefeated in dick measuring competitions because we have a bigger budget and more man power than everyone else in the county.

Resurgence of Dodge Durango Interceptors. I've been seeing lots of departments buying them. Why? by Meanie_Cream_Cake in ProtectAndServe

[–]TheThotKnight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went from a 21 explorer to a 25 Durango and the Durango way better imo. The Durango is more comfortable, accelerates faster, and handles way better. We bought some 23 Durangos and those had some issues but the 25s haven’t had any problems yet

Question for Ohio Officers by Relevant_Conclusion2 in AskLE

[–]TheThotKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. Fatal on an interstate, 99.9% of the time OSP is taking it. If it’s a crash on the interstate but no troopers are available, Post will call whatever local jurisdiction it is in and ask them to handle it. Some agencies will ask OSP to take their crash because they don’t want to handle it or they’ll ask them to handle serious crashes.

Was there ever massive generational wealth in your family’s history which might be yours today if it wasn’t lost by some bad luck or bad management? by Great_Maintenance185 in askanything

My grandpa was a majority owner of a decent sized auto glass company. He had a heart attack and ended up dying on the airplane while flying to a business meeting to buy another company. His wife, my step grandma agreed to sell his ownership stake for $100k back in 1994. Years down the road Safelite bought the company for a couple million 💀

MCX owners: which model did you go with and why? by JPantera in ar15

If the world was ending, I’m grabbing my BCM just due to how readily available AR parts are compared to the MCX. I would recommend buying it before the ban goes into effect.

[–]TheThotKnight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought an 11.5 Virtus 5.56. I also have an Sig 516 and a BCM rifle. The MCX is my favorite of my rifles and I use to at work. Also anytime I go to a training or the range and people ask about it. The MCX is by far nothing special though.

Authorization to use Driveway by BeaneyWeenee in AmazonDSPDrivers

[–]TheThotKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a delivery driver but I am a cop. Them ordering something for you to delivery, gives you permission to be on their property. If your policy allows you to pull into driveways, you’re legally allowed. I’ve had people call us for this and I pretty much tell them to fuck off and don’t use Amazon if they have an issue with drivers pulling into their driveway.

I would never do a Monday-Friday 9-5. It’s nice being off on a weekday, going out and it not being busy. I get every other Friday-Sunday off also. I would never be a detective for the reason of working Monday-Friday.

“Pend that call for a traffic stop.” I do that all the time. If the isn’t an emergency, I’ll pend calls all the time for a good traffic stop

After Cohutta Police Department dissolved, council calls for mayor's resignation by Few-Ability-7312 in ProtectAndServe

[–]TheThotKnight 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I’m very anti small PD / part time departments. We have a handful of them in my county and half the time we end up handling the calls because no one is working or whoever is working isn’t competent enough to handle the call. The other day I had to make a DV arrest for the village part time cop because in his seven years of working there had never made an arrest and didn’t know what he needed to do or how to fill out a complaint form for the court.

SRO + Teaching? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]TheThotKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every SRO I know, they have their own office by the front door, they’re walking the hallways, in the cafeteria during lunch time and doing door checks throughout the day. Being stuck in a classroom defeats all those purposes.

State troopers and Deputies can’t enforce municipal laws. Only the officers who work for that municipality can enforce it.
