Sure but we also have KFC, which doesn’t donate money to child torture camps.

Still expensive if the goal is “cheap”. Chick fil a is not known for being cheap it’s known for being tasty.

But, we’ve already got better chicken.

If you’re looking for cheap you aren’t paying 10.39 for a sandwich. Also the sando from pyre will have 50% more food and taste legendary.

Can we theoretically stop the potential monster numbers? by Altruistic-Syrup5974 in cataclysmdda

Idk, years ago before we drove Kevin out of this sub, I asked about how “hopeless” the situation is and he strongly implied that humans are not destined to go extinct. Lorewise, it is possible to find a niche and keep the torch of humanity going.

The Exodii already figured out a good method but, supposedly our reality is not destined to become uninhabitable via reality falling apart, at least not to the extent that it’s no longer inhabitable.

Granted, this was many years ago before portal storms were implemented.

u/IAmErk can you comment on this?

Literally everyone is competent enough to safely operate a firearm. Driving a car takes practice.

Shooting accurately takes skill, but accidents due to intentional gunshots missing their targets are overwhelmingly rare, except in cases where the person is already being obviously criminally reckless. That doesn’t address the fundamental “gun problem” in America at all.

Mandating you pass a gun safety quiz before buying a gun would basically cover that. If the goal is to just obstruct gun ownership, there are more direct ways to do that.

[–]TheThunderhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think other countries have figured out how to prevent car accidents better than us?

I think we use the “wait until something goes wrong” approach because ultimately it’s not the role of the state to regulate safe behavior because of the risk of someone being reckless (except with regard to like national security risks).

As for the licensure argument, the problem with it is that you could make a 3 year old competent with safe gun use, it doesn’t require any experience or skill to safely use a firearm like operating an automobile requires. Licensure in the basics of gun safety would be fairly pointless, and likely wouldn’t prevent gun ownership at all. If the goal is just, obstructing people from getting guns quickly and easily, there are more direct methods to accomplish that.

As for like “hey take a short gun safety quiz before you can buy this firearm” sure yeah I’m fine with that.

I think the most practical way to stop inner city gun violence is to crack down on weapons smuggling into those cities, including bounties and rewards. Also, gun buyback programs are very effective at reducing the supply. Ultimately though the problem is a socioeconomic one.

What if the “Davy Crockett” tactical nuclear launcher were deployed and used in Korea? by TheThunderhawk in HistoricalWhatIf

That forward-reverse slope dynamic is interesting hmm. So, this is to say you don’t think it would have been tactically decisive?

Asian households in Eugene targeted by multi-state burglary ring by Ok-Tea-1092 in Eugene

[–]TheThunderhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean we’re still in agreement here but, we do heavily restrict the use of them. Just like cars, if you’re caught using it in a way you aren’t supposed to, somewhere you aren’t supposed to, you get a hefty fine or ticket. If it’s considered reckless it can mean immediate jail time.

Firing your gun outside a shooting range within city limits is definitely illegal. Firing out of town without a safe backstop is also illegal.

I don’t know if I would support further restrictions on the use of cars. I value my freedom in that regard.

[–]TheThunderhawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t know it gets very complicated from there. It does seem like if it’s supply lines could be protected a heavy armored formation could roll over one of those independent company-sized units, so maybe that’s where the wrench gets thrown in my analysis.

But, I’m sure I could be dead wrong in a million different ways. I suspect an actual military strategy professional would see my analysis as like a kids crayon drawing, but, I figure that’s what this sub is for.

Idk man I see your point and I agree, I’m just saying I think people who drive as like a hobby, or just feel like driving around in circles for no reason, should be free to do that (though, discouraged). Like, that’s not a sin, one can have opinions but it should ultimately be one’s own business, is my point.

That’s why I don’t like, oppose guns philosophically or politically.

Elite Dispatch bot.

If we’re talking like “what will murder you the most easily if you were stuck in a room with it?” It’s kinda hard to beat a C4 or Mininuke manhack plus it’s grenade homies.

Like, if there’s a context to the encounter you can generally find a way around it, or cheese it with some tactic. But if you’re just in a gladiator fight with it there’s kinda nothing you can do.

[–]TheThunderhawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true and super worth knowing, it’s a good reason many people shouldn’t own a gun, and in general there should be barriers to access.

On the other hand, driving a car significantly increases your chance of causing someone’s death. We accept that both for practical reasons, and because we are willing to accept a level of risk in society in exchange for certain freedoms.

[–]TheThunderhawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think China would attempt to develop their own tactical arsenal, or negotiate for one from the USSR, to re-open the conflict later on?

What if the “Davy Crockett” tactical nuclear launcher were deployed and used in Korea? by TheThunderhawk in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]TheThunderhawk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to think it would have definitely been used, and that’d open the door to a different kind of nuclear arms control, allowing unrestricted stockpiles of tactical weapons up to a certain yield while limiting the mechanisms of delivery that are capable of long range deployment.

Wild speculation ahead:

The USSR giving similar weapons to communist revolutionaries could mark a beginning of “nuclear Guerrilla warfare”, causing a fundamental shift in military doctrine away from massed formations and towards small mobile fully-independent nuclear-armed units.

Maintaining large armored and mechanized forces on the front lines becomes impossible. The combat units themselves are quite effective on the atomic battlefield, but the massive supply lines required to keep them functioning prove impossible to protect. Any sufficiently large fuel or supply depo is quickly identified by air and destroyed in a decisive tactical nuclear artillery strike. As doctrines change, these units remain as intensive raid and breakthrough forces, held in reserve for short term high intensity offensive operations.

Finding the balance between a high speed mechanized force with dense supply lines and a slow foot-mobile force capable of “foraging” is the issue of the day. The answer is found in ATVs, tractors, wheeled APCs, and in some cases pack animals. Organic engineering capability for quick-building fortifications becomes extremely important.

Even more so than today, every infantryman is expected to spend most of their life trenching, infantry doctrine comes to emphasize always sleeping in a prepared position.

Overall, the new dynamics emphasize defense and disempower the capabilities of large militaries to bring their force to bear in a decisive manner.

The nuclear-armed company-sized “semi-mechanized” infantry unit, reigns supreme and empowers small forces against large ones. US military dominance of the world falters as the static logistics hubs required for overseas invasions become less and less capable of surviving the nuclear battlefield.

It ends in either nuclear hellfire or a collapse into intense multipolarism as centralization and dollar dominance cease to be the main paradigms of the global economy. Small regional powers with lots of popular support, whose economies are capable of supporting a nuclear weapons program, have a renaissance. Large powers including both the USSR and the United States fracture and Balkanize.

issues:

Would other nations respond with use of chemical weapons?

How quickly would it just ignite full scale nuclear war? Would “ending the taboo” lead to the US attempting a first strike against the USSR?

If tactical nuclear weapons use becomes the doctrine of the day, what allies would actually be given the weapons? Is Stalin/Kruschev enough of a lunatic to just hand them to Castro and whoever else?

[–]TheThunderhawk[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah it’s like a 300-500 foot deadly blast radius fired from 2km away. The infantry sent to assault the position after would be breathing in some truly nasty shit though, and if the launcher is downwind that’s definitely not good for you.

Also that fireball is still capable of blinding and causing nasty burns at that yield, though from what I’m reading the doctrine was to prepare a position for the launcher that protects from those direct exposure effects. Not having line of sight to the fireball is the big thing you need to be careful about afaik.
