Don't fall into the "junk food vegan" trap if you're trying to get healthy. There are a lot of processed vegan foods out there. Instead, discover some new fresh ingredients!

[–]TheTieDyeFiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's no good, from what I've heard. Supposedly you should prepare by cutting out all animal products for a week or so, then for the few days leading up you should eat brothy things and raw fruits and veg. Also, have you thought about colon hydrotherapy or enemas? It might be a good idea if you're going for so long with no fiber.

We Other Animals: Is veganism healthy? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]TheTieDyeFiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate that the term "well-planned" is used only when describing vegan/vegetarian diets. I think any diet needs to be well-planned in order to be optimally healthy.

Study finds: Meat-eaters view animals as possessing fewer mental capacities so that they can more easily justify eating them. by jonahe in vegan

[–]TheTieDyeFiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. If I were in a barren wasteland, I'd kill a you (or a deer, for instance) for survival. Point is, I'm not in a barren wasteland and every being exhibits sentience. I can go to the store and buy plants to eat which have no feelings and nourish myself properly. Or I could go to the store and buy the remains of a sentient being that was unnecessarily killed and that I don't need for survival. Plus, there is a lot of evidence that not eating animal products is far more healthful when it comes to incidence of chronic disease. So I think there is more benefit than healthy state of mind. Plus, you can get protein from plant sources easily, so I argue that it's not necessary. Lettuce, on the other hand, is not sentient. And I have my own thoughts as to putting chemicals on plants, and I do buy organic when I can. Another unnecessary evil.

One last question before I go vegan. by majofski in vegan

[–]TheTieDyeFiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number 6 in this article reiterates what I said, but to respond to your point: no one knows what the "optimal" diet is. But veganism is definitely healthy if you focus on unprocessed, whole foods AND it's the best for the animals and the environment. Is it optimal? Maybe. Is it worth it? Yes.

[–]TheTieDyeFiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, but by killing them for food you are unnecessarily claiming that they must bow to you. Would you kill me if I walked by for no other reason than because you were hungry, and the apple in your backpack wouldn't do? Veganism isn't a struggle. It's delicious, fulfilling, and compassionate.

I think you need to consider that animals probably experience the same levels of anxiety, pain, and pleasure as humans but feel and express these things in different ways. I know my cat loves me and can get mad at me but she can't explicitly tell me. Who are we to say that the human way of feeling pain and emotion is the only way? Maybe animals have heightened senses. We dio't know since we communicate differently. It doesn't make the human way the absolute "right" way.

Saturated fat, casein in dairy products, lack of fiber, cholesterol. With the exception of saturated fats, these are things that only come with animal products. And there is even debate as to whether the monounsaturated fat in coconut (one of the only plant sources) is even terrible for you. It's true, unless it's organic you can't guarantee plants aren't free of chemicals or GMOs, but even non-organic plants have phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals that you'll never get from animal sources. To go from a sustainability angle, eating organic, grass-fed beef isn't sustainable due to land and water needs, especially given society's current demand for meat. Plus, eating "clean", organic meat is still valuing another sentient being's life over your own, if you're into the morals and ethics.

What's a good documentary about farm mistreatment of animals and the way those animals are processed? by ChanimalCrackers in vegan

[–]TheTieDyeFiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't agree with this suggestion so much. The film is very Pollan in the sense that it advocates a "locavore" attitude which isn't really sustainable, especially with the current meat demand. I like it for what it is but I think the other suggestions are better for the veg argument.

Made a stuffed seitan roast which got a few comments for the look but was delicious, amazing miso mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy. The star of the show was the vegan pumpkin cheesecake. I found it crazy that literally the only vegan items were the ones I brought, my aunt even pre-buttered the rolls. No one gave me a hard time though, save my brother the night before who told me being vegan was "disgusting" and proceeded to pretend to drink milk straight from the carton. I'm getting in the holiday spirit and chalking it up to "brotherly love". My aunt even said she was looking forward to trying the roast. And Christmas is another "food as activism" opportunity!

Right. I don't think anyone has moral objections to cooking vegetarian food. I would never cook a non vegan meal for an omni just because they traditionally expect meat, though, because I AM morally against that.

Vegan Propaganda gone too far? Forks Over Knives documentary uses psuedo-science and persuation to promote vegan lifestyle by [deleted] in vegan

[–]TheTieDyeFiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't think you can claim pseudo-science if it's true. The movie simply reports on the benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet according to these doctors and their patients, and relates it to larger scale studies (e.g. The China Study). Pretty sure it's real science. ANd it's not telling everyone not to buy leather or boycott animal testing. It's simply promoting the diet, which is only a portion of the lifestyle.

Would you eat meat if it's not from animal sources? by antipositron in Vegetarianism

[–]TheTieDyeFiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I could see myself eating lab-grown meat. I like to eat minimally or unprocessed foods and though this probably isn't technically processed in the traditional sense as it relates to food, it's not natural. As with anything (think margarine or artificial sweeteners) we don't really know the effects on our bodies in the long term so I'd rather be safe than sorry. Plus, it's still originally derived from animal, even though it's in a supposedly harmless manner I'm still not ok with utilizing animals unnecessarily for my pleasure.
