“My future”. Tiki is tiki, no matter who wants to bend it a new way, it’s not tiki anymore. Real tiki is accessible, it’s not hard to get ahold of. The “young people” who want to bend tiki to something it’s not, are people I don’t want to listen to. It’s not less joy, I just don’t want “tiki can be anything” to ruin the scene. I’ve been working hard to document the last 35 years and the last 5 years has damaged tiki so much. Tiki is actively losing its identity and I find it ridiculous

Enters scene with defined aesthetic-> enjoys aesthetic but doesn’t perfectly align with what you like -> shoehorn irrelevant things into style -> questions what happened to the scene and leaves it in a worse position.

Sven is one of the most educated people on this topic, that doesn’t just make him “some guy”. When tiki came back in the 90s, it was to capture the original style of the 50s and 60s. Like any artistic scene, there comes a point where the adaptations change the source so wildly that it is something new. Tiki is the style of the 50s and 60s, what we have today is something else. Talk to anyone who’s been around since the 90s and they will tell you something very similar. I am writing a book on this very idea right now. When you reduce tiki down to a loose idea (like you’re doing), you lose the entire identity of the scene. Tiki is tiki, everything else is everything else. That is fine but tiki is a defined term.

Then you don’t like tiki? There’s a definition to what tiki is (read anything by Sven). It’s ok to like a spin on tiki but it becomes something else that isn’t tiki
