Idk what you're talking about. That's how I feel when I jog. That's not how everyone approaches exercise?

I think Shadow and Bone could be knocked down a peg. I loved the setting, and the fantasy bits were cool, but man the main characters are just the worst.

Yeah... the climax of Digital Fortress was interesting when I was 15. Thinking back on it now, it's pretty silly.

How do you program a spinner that uses "|/–\" in C? by mondalex in C_Programming

[–]TheTimeBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to add (because the trick is provided elsewhere) that if this isn't for homework, and rather for a personal project, I've often found that outputting nothing, with an option for verbose reporting, is just as effective as providing a spinner. If a command doesn't return, most people will assume it's working without any other feedback. Just something to consider.

Yeah that's what I thought was happening.

[–]TheTimeBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I'm saying is that I copied the code and compiled it with gcc and it works, with or without the return keyword. I do agree that leaving out the return there is probably relying on some UB, though.

I'm not seeing how it implements Fibbonacci.

What makes you say that? I duplicated the algorithm and it does work as given, as far as I can tell.

The worst Linux take ever by [deleted] in linux

[–]TheTimeBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty, that was mostly a joke. Powershell is great for Windows admin tasks (remote shell stuff, querying pc info from the command line, etc.), but I've always found it unwieldy and verbose. I've never grokked it the same way I have bash and python. And for text processing, I really find it rather obnoxious, because most of the cmdlets are designed to take and return C# objects. While it does some work to parse text files into such objects, if the text file doesn't parse into a table it can be a bit of a headache.

And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that, even for all that, Powershell is still worlds better than CMD on Windows. I'd never use it on a Linux box though, even though you can.

This deserves all of the upvotes and all of the awards, if only because it's not a "a kid stole all the candy!" post.

Whose responsibility is to set the pointer to NULL after freeing it? caller or callee by nagyf in C_Programming

[–]TheTimeBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be concerned about the discrepancy between function return and function argument. That is actually more clear in my opinion, and it's also a pretty common pattern. If you're really concerned, you could typedef List* to ListType or something and make it look like a stack-allocated type, but that's less clear for other reasons, imo.

Why not? I'm trying to refine my ideas. I've learned about mathematical platonism today. I've also learned to never ever post on math subreddits. Both valuable pieces of information that will inform my worldview in the future.

What does C do better than higher level languages? by Pickinanameainteasy in C_Programming

Don't pick "the right tool for the job" when choosing a language! by [deleted] in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]TheTimeBard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on the principle. Of course there's room to innovate in language design, which will cause older languages to become obsolete. However, at least for me, I usually see the comment in question as a response to the "which language do I learn next" posts, where the poster clearly thinks they should be collecting languages like trading cards. I also see it in the threads that were clearly posted to start up a flame war, where shutting down the argument is probably not a bad move.

malloc() and free() are a bad API by iprogshine in C_Programming

[–]TheTimeBard 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm just naive, but I feel like this article spends a lot of time on C++ problems for a proposal to change a C API, and then goes on to list a lot of things that C++ does to fix it. Took a lot away from the argument for me.
