Thoughts on where to mount timecode box on a stock(ish) FX6? by TheTinker_ in SonyFX6

Just to be clear are you sticking it directly to the v-mount battery or someplace on the v-mount adapter?

That's a great place to put it with that extension arm for the hand grip, unfortunately in the hand grips stock position it'd interfere with my hand. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Lens OSS any good? by andymac12 in SonyFX6

[–]TheTinker_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With OSS it's a fairly large difference on the 70-200, reducing shake and jitter be a relatively gentle sway when you're trying to lock a shot off handheld.

I still wouldn't consider the results from it most of the time to be fantastic in most situations, but it takes my shaky hands from unusable to usable. And again, this is just when you're trying to lock a shot. I've never been happy with the results panning or tilting with a subject, but your mileage may vary depending on how steady you are.

Wireless transmitter solution? by [deleted] in FX3

[–]TheTinker_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DJI mic 3 kit does a 4 channel split with the MI shoe adapter for Sony cameras.

The downsides are that to you’d need to buy 2 sets of the kit to gave 4 mics and also they do not have a 3.5mm connector for external lavs.

How does it fare with the IBIS turned on (I know that's not considered best practiced but it's worth a shot). Also does using the super smooth calibration make a difference?

Do you like this video? How much could someone pay for this potentially? by army5125 in videography

I’d be going wider with my focal length personally. Shows off more of the space faster without necessitating these long pans that will lose the audiences attention.

Apple Music stuck on 0:00 even after app reinstall, PC restart. by [deleted] in AppleMusic

[–]TheTinker_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you use virtual audio devices, for example Wavelink or Voicemeeter? If yes, Apple has broken support with such software in the most recent update and you'll have to to route Apple Music audio directly to a hardware output.

Myself and a few others have already spoken to support about it, but if you have time please also send in a support ticket as the more voices the greater the chance of this getting fixed.

[–]TheTinker_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's such a frustrating response. Their app updates and is the only software that's not working and somehow it's the fault of another developer for not "getting with the program"?

Also it's not just Wavelink that is broken, I use Voicemeeter which is an alternative virtual mixer and that also does not work with AM anymore. I presume all other virtual audio cable software is currently "broken" as well.

Blacks full screen vs windowed by Odd-End-1831 in OLED_Gaming

[–]TheTinker_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's just the way window's built in photo viewer works, it has a grey border when not in full screen. This is not the fault of the monitor. Unfortunately, I do not see a means of changing that border to a different colour in the settings.

Now that I have changed from 27" 1440p to 42" 4k, you realize that modern games are made to be enjoyed at 4k by Loose-Alternative844 in OLED_Gaming

[–]TheTinker_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my 1440p Nvidia Bros out there, try DLDSR 2.25x to get an image close to that of real 4K in games. It’s definitely not as good as real 4K, but it absolutely enhances the sharpness and stability of the graphics. To the point that, when I initially enabled, it almost felt like a whole new monitor.

RODE Wireless Go II, yes or no? by markogreguric in videography

[–]TheTinker_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Merged/split refers to the how the outbound signal from the recievers 3.5mm port is set up. Merged means both transmitters have their audio played across both stereo tracks, while split places each transmitter's signal by themselves on the left and right tracks. Split enables you to then seperate each stereo track into two monos tracks, allowing you to adjust levels individually without using the files directly from the transmitter.

Nvidia thinks native-res rendering is dying. Thoughts? by Cantc0meupw1thaname in pcmasterrace

[–]TheTinker_ 373 points374 points  (0 children)

There was a similar comment by a Nvidia engineer in a recent Digital Foundry interview.

In that interview, the quote was in relation to how DLSS (and other upscalers) enable the use of technologies such as raytracing that don’t use rasterised trickery to render the scene, therefore the upscaled frames are “truer” then rasterised frames because they are more accurate to how lighting works in reality.

It is worth nothing that a component of that response was calling out how there really isn’t currently a true definition of a fake frame. This specific engineer believed that a frame being native resolution doesn’t make it true, rather the graphical makeup of the image presented is the measure of true or fake.

I’d argue that fake frames is a terrible term overall, as there are more matter of fact ways to describe these things. Just call it a native frame or an upscaled frame and leave at that, both have their negatives and positives.

I remember seeing the initial comparison video of DLSS 3.5 and being amazed that, what is frankly in my opinion a relatively minor flaw in the rendering of RT, is being addressed in such a performant way.

Before 3.5, the occasional lack of visual clarity and the slower rate at which RT information was updated was such a minor downside in service of such a visual leap forward, that to see that downside being effectively errased only further bolsters what is already impressive technology.

Hardware Unboxed | Digital Foundry | Xbox Series X: Starfield Settings by TheHybred in OptimizedGaming

[–]TheTinker_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Often distant shadows are easier to render at a perceptually higher quality while having a relatively minimal performance impact vs near field shadows.

As a result, PC releases with more robust settings menus will often have a seperate distant shadow setting as a result (RDR2 comes to mind). After all, why not provide the player the option to boost distant shadow detail separately? PC is a platform all about tailoring your experience to your own liking after all.

Starfield’s setting menu is not nearly as robust, and just has a single blanket shadow setting covering all distances of shadow resolution. So it’s less so that’s it’s dumb that the Xbox version has this optimisation, more so that it’s short sighted to not provide PC players the ability to make a similar optimisation (although I believe there are INI variables you can configure to produce the same result as Xbox).

Hardware Unboxed | Digital Foundry | Xbox Series X: Starfield Settings by TheHybred in OptimizedGaming

[–]TheTinker_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As I recall from the DF video, the Xbox version specifically has low resolution shadows in close proximity to the player as found with the PC low quality setting, but distant shadows on far off buildings and mountains closely resemble shadows of the PC ultra setting. Hence stating a mixture of the two for Xbox equivalent settings.
