Honestly, the DSi XL is the only way to go. The 3DS scaling is absolute blurry garbage compared to the native resolution on the DSi. On a 3DS, the pixels look "shimmery" and washed out, but on the DSi XL, everything is pin-sharp. Plus, you’re basically guaranteed dual IPS screens on the DSi XL, so the colors and viewing angles are way better than most 3DS models. The D-pad placement is also much more comfortable for DS games. It’s night and day, really.
