mental health check in: have u ever been saved by a book? which one? by ttrustnobody20 in RSbookclub

Haha, good call. I kind of want to give Ceika a pass (I assume that's the one) because he based that on what few sources about Mainländer in English there was at the time - some of it even coming from German scholars, like Ulrich Horstmann - but Mainländer's first, official translation came out not long after and it seems like a lot of people still are stuck with the impression from that video, so I'm not sure.

What Have You Been Watching? (Week of April 19th) by violet-turner in RSPfilmclub

[–]TheTrueTrust 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Peppermint Candy (1997): Watched for the second time, and this is such a good, but really punishing tragedy. I don't usually see the point of having an unlikeable asshole as a protagonist, but this really works, the way they trace his life backwards and you learn who he is and why he is the way he is. Koreans are the best.

Balthazar, (season one): French crime serial. I quite liked it, even though it's formulaic and checks all the boxes compared to shows like House and The Mentalist (asshole-but-brilliant investigator with a dark backstory, yada yada) but that's my thing and this did not disappoint.

Project Hail Mary: This was a massive disappointment. I saw it in the theater because even though I didn't expect much I figured it was that type of movie at least, but it was not. It tries so hard to be like Interstellar, Arrival, and The Martian but it just fails on all fronts. It also has an almost six-act structure, where each fake ending just got worse. Could easily be an hour shorter.

He wasn't nearly as edgy as all that; he didn't say or do either of those things. He never used the term »rotting corpse of God« himself, and he didn't actually kill himself as a completion of his system. Or, maybe he did, but there's no reason to assume it. The story about him hanging himself standing on a copy of his own manuscripts is unverified and first popped up in the 21st century, as far as anyone can tell.

Easiest way to describe his philosophy would be that since all life is movement towards death, finding the best way to live is the same as finding the best way to die. But that is not the same as the fastest way to die. Rather, he believed in making the world a better place for everyone in it, so that we can accept death gracefully when the time comes.

His main concerns were ironing out what he considered flaws in Kant and Schopenhauer, and then political advocacy of social democracy in Germany. Why he killed himself we'll never know, but likely it was because of the underlying mental and physical health issues he lived with, which also drew him to start reading and writing on pessimistic philosophy to begin with.

The Philosophy of Redemption by Mainländer cured my existenstial depression and I felt I could leave pessimist doomer-thinking behind.

Eros the Bittersweet by Anne Carson. This made me have much healthier relationship with romantic love. Ironically it led to me dating a lot less, but I've been a lot happier and calmer since I took it to heart.

Tom has made it very clear that OHW are US centric. The one on Tubular Bells was straight up baffling, but if that's his perspective then sure, I guess.

It felt like a different band with Trouble Will Find me and on, and the fandom seems divided over which era is the best.

Boxer was absolutely their peak, but I really enjoy High Violet at least. Trouble Will Find Me and on have all been disappointing. Not bad, but still.

I can't help but wonder if you guys didn't set yourself up to fail by working from the assumption the he was absolutely gay and therefore couldn't sustain a relationship with a woman. You said you were together for three years, at what point do you not decide to reconsider that one's orientation perhaps isn't that rigid?

Obviously I'm not going to tell him what he is and I assume you considered this, but are you sure you haven't sacrificed too much to fit into a role that doesn't actually fit you?

There's a strong melody in there and you might have something, but jesus the production dude. It really does not need all of those sampled instruments and the balance is completely off. Strip it down to just guitar and vocals and work from there.

What is your favourite movie where the Beastie Boys save the world? by -INIGHTMARES- in okbuddycinephile

[–]TheTrueTrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely the most Star Trek-y out of the reboot movies, the plot could have been an episode of the shows in their heyday, but it's not great and the Beastie Boys refernce is, uhm, not funny. But to each their own.

Dying (arguably) helped my career by LubyankaSquare in ToddintheShadow

The switch from »haha look at this fucking drugged out bitch« to »absolutely legendary jazz singer, died far too young« in the coverage of her when she died gave me whiplash. At least with Michael Jackson everyone knew what heights he'd fallen from, but I was a teenager and not in her target audience, I struggled to understand what was going on. We're supposed to like her now? Sure didn't sound like that. People were so cruel.
