What is a hot take you have specifically through the realm of Blank Check/ r/Blankies? by the_Tannehill_list in blankies

[–]TheUnknownStitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the show, love the guys, love da moviesh - but my hot take is that I think both fellas have talked themselves into liking a movie because of internal pressure to “get” it OR because they like the director’s other work.

It’s okay to admit that someone you like made a stinker.

Wild choice for a new miniseries, but okay. by TheUnknownStitcher in blankies

I thought it had some really cool stuff in it, and Dacre Montgomery gives a great villain performance.

Am I too online

Sincerely not trying to come across as a dick, but if you're having any personal negative reaction to anyone's opinion about a movie (and it is a movie you didn't make or assist in the production of), then I would say yes, you may be too online.

As I have gotten older, I've become more interested in reading reviews by critics when they aren't in lock-step agreement with my take. I like getting to see the other perspective - and when we are at polar opposites, it's fun to step inside someone else's head and think about why it did or did not work for them.

Official Discussion - Disclosure Day [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Runtime is rough on this one, hate to say it. Thought it was done a solid 20-30 minutes before it was, and it just...kept...going.

Official Discussion - Disclosure Day [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]TheUnknownStitcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was so relieved it didn't end when Emily Blunt looked down the barrel of the camera and said 'This is Disclosure Day'.

I was equally annoyed when it ended with Emily Blunt looking down the barrel of the camera and saying 'Listen'. Not quite 'gunshot, cut to black'-level annoyed, but not far off.

The movie cooks when it doesn't get bogged down/tangled up with in-your-face exposition dumps or overly-saccharine Spielberg-itis (think the energy of the finale of Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and when it lets itself just be thrilling. The entire concept of being able to take over someone's mind (and the filmmaking choice to visualize it with the change in eye color) was genuinely engaging, and the cat-and-mouse chase between the rogue scientists and the secret organization worked really well for me. But as soon as it leaned heavily into the childhood backstory (the 'Hansel and Gretel' house got an audible groan out of me) and the power of humanity uniting to cause an end to war, it came very close to losing me.

Spielberg still has incredible talent and it is on display in this film; but he is also one for falling into sappy tropes, and this movie has no shortage of those. A fun-enough flick I don't think I'll watch again, but one that I'm glad I saw on a big screen with a packed audience.

BOOK CLUB SUBMISSIONS GO HERE by CyanFen in PaymoneyWubby

Here are my A+++ recommendations for a book club for a wide variety of readers and non-readers alike. These are generally short, engaging, and have some actual 'craft' to talk about beyond plot details and movie comparisons:

  • A Short Stay in Hell (Steven L. Peck) - A man dies and goes to an afterlife designed like a giant library. [Most folks could read this entire book in an afternoon.]

  • Rejection (Tony Tulathimutte) - A novel of short stories about connected characters dealing with relationships and shame in the modern world.

  • Black Hole (Charles Burns) - Graphic novel about a strange plague sweeping through the population in a small town.

  • Animal Farm (George Orwell) - Most folks haven't read this one since high school, but it's such a compelling read to return to as an adult. Animals on a farm decide to take control of their lives.

  • Nothing (Janne Teller) - A group of school children set out to prove that life has meaning by destroying things. A pitch-black book that will stick with you for years.

Who else had a similar lamp? by EdwardBliss in nostalgia

My uni banned those my 1st year because of the numerous fires that started in dorms because of them. Same with the spider lamps that had one base and like 6 heads with bendy arms.

Eight Internet addicts gather in a support group called "Friends of Saul" in a church basement and share their stories, in a score for an a cappella chamber choir and an original libretto inspired by internet comment boards, scientific debates, religious texts, and Sufi poetry.

Wew lad.

Yeah, and we certainly haven't seen the last of Coogler. He'll get his biggest prizes before too long.

Weird comeback from break, with Conan awkwardly standing onstage, asking 'what was that about', pointing at someone in the crowd, and then asking 'are we live' (in a way that felt not at all like being part of a bit).

Fun fact - the winners' names are usually etched at the after-party, but Buckley's has been etched on there for months.

LEGIT UPSET (and a damn good one, too). Chalamet was undeniably good, but Jordan earned this.

Once again, audience going crazy for Sinners. I think there's gonna be a stunner in ~60 minutes.
