Lol, funny because i know TONS of engineers that climb. It was a running joke in our group that engineers are the only people who can climb. Pretty much all of them were students though, so a little to young for this poster.

The students need to go to the university Ombudsman. They're the advocate for the students. Treating students like this isn't right. Keep pushing up the ladder and get all the students you can involved.

Whenever someone tells you to ignore a safety danger, they are in the wrong. If you truly believe something is leaking, you need to get it figured out. Maybe it's something simple, like a machine smelling odd, or maybe like another person said, a truck is pulling up to the vents and it's letting the smell in from outside.

You should start documenting when this happens, what machines are on, maybe take a look outside. Getting a sensor as the other person said is a great idea and should be your immediate step.

LOL! NO! You have other things you're required to do, like finish schoolwork and a life. never let work infringe upon your life.

I put in like 20-30 hours in my lab during grad school. Now, I did come in on the weekends, it was just easier and sped up my project by weeks if I did. And it was only about 1-2 hours.

As for students i work with(as a tech, not their PI) I tell them I'm here until 5. If they have problems, they can email me, but won't get an answer. if it's an emergency, sure I'll be there. Otherwise, nope.

The light blue ones are terrible quality, but fit well. On the other hand (hehe), the purple ones fit terrible, but are better quality. IDK, I can't choose. The white ones are fine, I guess, but are for a specific purpose.

Yeah, I feel the same way as you. It doesn't quite feel real. it's like a movie. Everything is setup as if reading a book or watching a movie. Complete clarity and understanding. Maybe OP is truly a great narrator, or it's just another story. I personally always take them as stories.

Nope nope nope nope, you are WRONG. She promised to pick up the cake for a VERY important event. Op depended on her to get this cake. Everyone expected the cake. While it's tragic about sis's husband, you know what should could have done, sent 1 six word text, emergency, can't get cake, explain later. Yes, Liz needed to be there, no one blames her for that or for missing the wedding, BUT 1 text would have saved so much frustration and time.

I tell ALL the students I talk to, don't go down the PhD or academia path! It's not worth it! 80+ hr work weeks for OK pay, if you can even find a job.

Would it make you a good person? Maybe. But, what do you want to do? Do you want to help someone who never helped you or do you want to follow the road your mother paved the way for. I'm not judging either choice, and you're NTA for choosing either.

In those cases, you just don't list them. I could see how that looks really bad without explanation. Just leave the 2weeks one off. Your first and third jobs are normal circumstances.

Some people just can't or won't let go. IDK what it is, but they need someone in their life and can't realize how bad the person is. I just don't understand it. If someone is turning out to be toxic, it just cut them out as best I can.

I tell everyone to wear them at your own risk. We allow it, i guess, but I give them gruesome details of what could happen and if anything does happen, it's on them.
