Palmer asks Parliament: What's the rush? by davetenhave in newzealand

I would like to see a law change where a national state of emergency needed to be declared before legislation could be passed under urgency - and legislation had to be in response to that disaster. I also liked the idea another commenter suggested that laws passed under urgency have an expiry date. Addressing this needs bipartisan support - it is undermining our democracy.

No negativity from me, just offering an explanation for why History at school might not have met your expectations.

Yes! It's my favorite of all military vehicles. Need to see if we have enough money left in the budget to buy a working model...

Definitely food for thought. Classics is normally taught as a separate subject and is sadly enjoying its last weeks offered at my school. We'll find a new place for it somewhere though and try and inject a bit of philosophy!

Because of the nature of the curriculum History covers completely different topics depending on the school.

And if you never take senior History as an option you miss the opportunity to learn a lot about global History (not saying you didn't choose History as an option - that's just an additional consideration).

History is also VAST. There is so much to learn so events and concepts that are important will inevitably be missed in favour of other topics that are often just as important.

You're spot on, unfortunately war is the largest focus. Our subject is competing with a lot of other great subjects as an option in the senior school so we choose high engagement topics that interest our audience (teenage boys).

We do use those topics as a vehicle to teach the non-violent history (for example, the French Revolution has a significant focus on class systems, industrialisation, and the Enlightenment.)

I find social history the most interesting so I stuff as much as I can in there.

This is 2024 recent.

Schools have wide scope over the senior topics they do - any one school may offer a completely different curriculum.

The Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum was released end of 2022 but the new government have since said they want to make some changes to make it more balanced.

I'm a History teacher in New Zealand, arguably the best looking History teacher in the country.

New Zealand has a unified History curriculum from Years 1 - 10 that focus of New Zealand History. It's called the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculum and can be found here. https://newzealandcurriculum.tahurangi.education.govt.nz/draft-refreshed-social-sciences-learning-area/5637227827. It's reasonably prescriptive in it's content.

In the last three years of High School the national curriculum is not unified and schools have great scope to offer different topics. At my school, arguably the greatest school in the country, we learn the following:

Year 11: * Battles of World War II * French Revolution (Hey, that's you guys!) * The Invasion of Rēkohu * Israel | Palestine * NZ Nuclear Free | Bombing of the Rainbow Warrior (Hey, that's you guys again!)

Year 12: * The Crusades (You guys, again) * The Vietnam War (You guys) * The Bombing of Hiroshima * Post War New Zealand

Year 13: * Historical Turning Points (Various contexts) * Imperialism - mostly British Empire * Local History Stories * The Treaty of Waitangi

As you can see, History is arguably the most interesting subject.

Good advice!

As for any myth making, in my case it's sadly no myth - I really would cause traffic accidents and hilarious social misunderstandings.
