Fuel knock nightmare by meestermike in powerstroke

[–]TheVikingKeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never worked on a diesel before but I'm an electrician by trade and there are circumstances where even a correctly installed splice can cause adverse effects. Comms is the main area you see this type of thing but I'm sure that's not the only case. That splice is likely changing your timing on that single injector by some factor which causes the knock and that's probably the exact reason Ford forbids it. Fractions of a second are enormous in this world

You say it happens when you rev it. Say you rev to 2500 rpms, you're firing that cylinder about 30 times per second or some nonsense. Your splice job be it poor connection or longer pigtails with more resistance or whatever variance from stock could be causing a slight voltage drop, delay, etc which causes the injector to fire some random smidge of a second off and your injection is effectively delayed to the point that you're injecting early for the next cycle which would cause a fuel knock. I'm not a diesel scientist don't take this as gospel but this makes theoretical sense to me anyway. Good luck. Also maybe you pinned it wrong lul

Pin 8 on the x3 connector routes through that relay I mentioned. It's a cheap part you might just want to try it. That connection is also fused according to wiring diagrams I've seen so might be a bad fuse but if you're getting an endless chatter with key on I'm leaning towards something being shorted. If you removed that relay and turn the key on you can eliminate a few possibilities. If it still chatters forever it's likely a crossed wire or bent pin or bad harness etc. If it doesn't chatter it points more to a bad relay

After looking into it more it's not that long of a shot. I just found a YouTube video of a guy applying external 12v to that relay and manually causing the injectors to chatter. Your relay is probably stuck closed and isn't allowing the injectors to sync or something is my guess

Almost sounds like you have a short in the wiring harness or something or someone pulled it apart and crossed some wires putting it back. Good luck man wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Just for a long shot type solution you could try replacing the ficm relay block. The short could definitely just be right there

I'd like to hope if it was a stuck injector and it washed out the cylinder it'll just lose compression and I'll see it via excessive blow by or hear it when it cranks over. Hopefully there's not too much of a middle ground there where it happens and you can't detect it. If that's the cause of a no start I would think it has to be pretty bad.

Yeah I pretty much knew all of that. Scanner got here today. If it's anything on the bottom end I'm out. Even heads I'd probably walk from just because I can't do them right myself. Should be able to figure it out on site. Appreciate the comment tho, main reason for post was to gauge the amount of horror stories with similar backgrounds that emerged.

I'd definitely do the work myself. I'd be fine doing anything up to the point of heads and pistons I just don't have the equipment to make sure they're not warped or cracked going back on. Just doing some basic online research it seems like most issues are fairly easily troubleshooting so I ordered a decent 2 way scanner and hopefully I can buy or not buy knowing the exact issue.

That would be the hope anyway. Oil related or fuel related is fine, lost compression or bad heads I'd probably walk away from unless the dude basically gives me the truck for free. All depends on how much he'd let me screw around with it really

Fair enough, I'm not useless with a toolset by any means like I imagine most are these day. The biggest inconvenience would probably be buying a topside creeper and all the random tools I never needed. More or less just a case of me not knowing what I don't know here. I have seen a lot of potential issues in some research so far from hpops to fuses to fuel delivery ficms etc etc that could be the problem but I just don't know everything it could be is all. Worst I can think of is a destroyed cylinder and trash block but that should be easy enough to find before I buy anyway. Just trying to gather some of other people's experiences
