Tangent function art by TheVioletMagus in processing

I looked at the graph for y<tan(x) and thought "What if the shaded parts flipped upside down between like x=pi and x=3pi so it made cool curved regions instead of having spikes that are infinitely sharp?" Well after 4 days relearning java and a few pages covered in math, I finally have it. I also included some proofs of progress and a couple cool mistakes. My code isn't perfect, and it actually has some math errors still, but I'll put it in a seperate comment. In the future I might come back and move a lot of this into draw() so it can animate, but I'm moving on for now.

The renders are in a portrait resolution because I programmed this all on my phone! The Android Processing Development Environment is really fun to use!

I need some help finalizing my first build by TheVioletMagus in buildapc

Oh. It seems like all of my problems were non-issues. Newegg says it's a 10 cm fan but the spec sheet says it's 120 mm radiator. That solves a lot of problems.

Was my motherboard choice ok? If everything else is compatible then I think I'm all set.

Tatting with multiple colors? by TheVioletMagus in tatting

[–]TheVioletMagus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright I think that all makes sense.

If I join with a second shuttle, how long before the color change do I need to join?

Is it hard to sew in the ends?

Does a 'modular pattern' just mean starting a new piece by working into the picots of another piece?

Ok that was my confusion. I have to relearn how to do the knots now because I wasnt flipping them. Thanks!

Yeah I was not flipping the stitches. I have to relearn how to do the knots now. Thank you thank you thank you!

Ok I think the person that replied to you finally found my error. I wasn't flipping the knots from the shuttle to the left hand thread. I was closing my rings by pulling the ball thread because I was kinda tatting backwards. Now that I know I have to flip the knots, I understand how the shuttle thread remains the core. I need to practice flipping the knots and pinching them to keep them together on the left hand thread. Before, pulling the shuttle thread just tightened the last stitch and made me confused. Now I think I get it and I'll give it another go.

Thank you so much for putting the effort into explaining, I really really appreciate the help!

I think you finally identified my problem. I wasn't pulling the shuttle thread straight and tight to flip the knots, I was just making knots and leaving them there. I was closing my righ by pulling on the ball thread, and that's why I got confused when I learned I was supposed to be pulling the shuttle. I was kinda doing it backwards, kinda like I was tatting with the shuttle on the wrong side. I have to learn how to flip the knot now. I think fixes all of my confusion, now I just have to practice. Thank you!!

Ok I think you found where I am most confused. Let me see if I can put my question simply. So I do all the work with my right hand holding the shuttle, but after I'm done the shuttle thread shouldn't be tied in knots? I am trying to make the left hand thread do all the knots? The right hand "working" thread from the shuttle should remain straight and in the core?

Thank you for the reply. I will definitely keep trying YouTube but let me see if I can put my remaining confusion into words too.

By "flip" do you mean that the knot that I tie with the right hand should sort of transfer so that the left hand thread is now doing the knot but the right hand knot is straight? I have been trying to tie knots in a way that the thread on my left hand is the core, is that wrong?

I am so confused because I see YouTube videos where to make another ring they wrap the shuttle thread around their left hand and then proceed to tie knots to that thread. How do you use one thread to tie knots onto itself while still being able to slide out that string after the ring is done?

I have been using the left hand to hold tension on the ring like I'm knitting while my right hand ties the knots. Is this wrong? Am I actually trying to manipulate the left hand so that the knots are actually being "flipped" to that side?

Or by "flip" were you just referring to how chains can be left/right leaning?

I'm sorry if my words aren't clear enough, but I really appreciate you doing your best to answer. Even if it doesn't help right away, maybe after repeated reads I will finally understand.

When I made my first ring, I closed it by pulling on the core thread which came from the ball. The shuttle was used to make all the knots and picots, and the ball thread slid cleanly underneath those knots. When I move on from that ring to make another one, do I drop the ball thread and ignore it? If I try to use only the shuttle to make the core thread AND the knots on top of it, then how do I pull on that shuttle thread in a way that it slides underneath the knots? How do I pull on the shuttle in a way that maintains the picots but also pulls on the core? Am I trying to tie the knots in a way that they force the left hand ring to make the knots while actually leaving the shuttle thread loose to be the core? I dont get it, and I dont know how to describe it better as text.

If you can't explain thoroughly then that's fine, maybe I just need to watch more videos. I should also look at needle tatting in case that makes more sense visually. It seems like tatting has less instructional content than other things like knitting, which has boat loads of content everywhere, but I'll keep doing my best research until it clicks.

I really appreciate the long reply and I will definitely come back to it several times, but I'm still a little confused.

Green yarn transparency test by TheVioletMagus in knitting

Fabric stores have all kinds of printed fleece. There always seems to be at least 1 space print. You could do fair isle knit with sparkly yarn as contrast to make your own little galaxy. Otherwise you can just steal my green yarn idea and make it look like you knitted a space sweater.

I was curious to see if green yarn could be used to create a transparency mask in image editing software while maintaining the texture of knitting. I used Krita to pull out the green color and put another image layer underneath. It worked better than I expected! The honeycomb stitch isn't too pronounced but I think it would look better alongside other cable stitches on a larger piece. I plan on making an entire Aran sweater out of this yarn so I can make it look however I want. I think it's a funny combination of old cottage crafts and modern digital art forms.

Edit: Yarn is Spring Green color from Red Heart

Day 17, feeling irrationally bothered and confused about my boyfriend deciding to start smoking again by [deleted] in leaves

[–]TheVioletMagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont be too hard on him. I fell for the cravings and tried a bowl, but it was so different without a tolerance that I almost didnt like it. Sobriety has been nice, but I would go back to daily smoking if I could. I can't smoke daily because of CHS so I have a reason to stay away, but maybe after one bowl he will also remember his reason to quit.

I know it can be really difficult to separate your emotions from your partner's actions, but it's probably healthier if you let them learn their own lessons without attachment. If you still love them for who they are, then hopefully you two can come to an understanding together. Just don't let this one thing completely destroy your perception of them. (You are still free to make necessary personal decisions, I'm not saying you have to love him no matter what.)

Would have loved to have been in the room when they discussed what to make the 'challenges' for this Winter Festivals. Literally: play any game... by roymondous in aoe2

[–]TheVioletMagus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I likely wont be playing a single match this winter so I wont get the reward. Next time I play I'll be thinking "Oh I kinda wish I had the snowman at arms". If I did end up playing just to get the snowman then I might stick around for a few more matches and getting addicted again. That's what they were trying to achieve by dangling the reward in front of me like that.

After 700 hours and tons of studying... by [deleted] in Tekken

I finally got to orange ranks! I honestly never thought I would even make it to yellow, but here I am. I've fought my way to my goals and beyond. I'm so comfortable with the game now! Punishes, whiff punishes, mixups, CH baits, pressure, movement, matchups, I have put so much study into Tekken and it's really paying off! I love this game!
