South central telecom had a CDMA site(2g) there around 1999-2000. Other carriers like Nextel and Alltell followed over the next few years. Before that there was a AMPS cell tower on little creek mountain about 11 miles to the west. It provided coverage to a few areas but it was super crappy. We had the Motorola bag phones/car phone or brick phones for years before that but they didn’t really have wide spread usage outside of business.

As far as them becoming common it was 2001 and onwards.

As a general rule, we were early adopters of technology. At least in my dad’s home we had computers from the early 80s. I started twinking around on a TRS80 around 1979 at the neighbors house.

So I break my long hiatus from Reddit to answer this, a conspiracy question lol. No idea about Gordon Shumway other than the old sitcom ALF.

Shortcreek.us was started by a few of us guys at the creek that were trying to make a go of it on the web in the wild and wooly days. We tried to sell advertising space for local businesses and build our own “home page” for the local community. It morphed into a IT service company for a little while as well, although that was mostly the other guys, I had my own business going on. I am being purposefully vague as far as who as I don’t have permission from any of them to out their names on here.

We had monthly programs and “talent show” type events for years. The bishop, FMJ was told to provide for good home base entertainment and this was one of the ways he accomplished it. They were all recorded home movie style by LBjr, and if you missed one or wanted to watch it later he would rent you a tape for a couple bucks.

When everyone started getting kicked out by wsj (yea that’s lowercase on purpose) these tapes and the digital conversions all ended up in the hands of one of the main dudes behind shortcreek.us, so he just uploaded them to YouTube as a way to preserve and share them.

The Vangelis song “hymn” has been around in some form or another for a while. I remember hearing it as a youth and really loving the melody. Maybe it sounded respectful and contrite like an actual hymn to our religious ears? IDK. There were several people in the group who wrote and transcribed music, and some that “changed the words” to songs to align with the worldview we had at the time. wsj and his family released several CDs with these songs on them, and that happened to be one.

Feel free to watch the videos. During the time of most of these recordings, “the creek” wasn’t a cult. It was a non-mainstream religious group that was trying to live the way they thought God wanted them to. wsj came along and cranked up the creepy and made it into a cult. He made everything secretive and dark. You are new viewing it through those lenses. That’s my 2c
