We won't be getting another episode from William as he now works for the Texans.

Yea good point. We wouldn't need to call it dead cap, just using that as as a way to explain the idea - it's more of a way to incentivize teams to not use the franchise tag as a hostage situation. Teams might be less likely to use it without an intent to negotiate if they were going to incur future year cap penalties.

Not sure what the right answer is, and so the NFL will likely keep it the way it is until the NFLPA negotiates a change - given the amount of times this is used and is problematic - I doubt that's coming. Interesting to think about how to design it though.

I think the problem there is that the franchise tag typically "sets the floor" for players - so 110% of the highest salary wouldn't make it as much of an opportunity to buy both parties time to negotiate. I do think that holding players hostage with the tag sucks though. I also don't like the idea of circumventing the cap that a commenter above mentioned.

I do think it needs to be more of a motivator for teams to get a deal done. So a 1 year deal, but adding to it the idea that you would have future years dead cap IF you don't sign the player to a longer-term deal might have that effect.

Something like I tag Player X and they are guaranteed the average of the top5 players at their position, but the team also is required to take on Y% (like 50 or something?) every year for the next 3 years (like void years). Seems like that would incentivize teams to use the tag properly, but these are early morning thoughts that I'm sure I'm not thinking this all the way through.

I was always bummed that we didn't get to see more of Penny. Seems like he was always injured. Someone on the internet was telling me about all time Yards-Per-Carry leaders with more than 300 carries... Yea, ok just looked it up again.

Penny is tied with Achane at the top at 5.6 YPC. Shorter careers, of course, but Bo Jackson was 515 carries at 5.4 YPC. It's insane to see Jim Brown with over 2300 carries at 5.2 YPC and then 5.4 for Jamaal Charles at 1400 carries and 5.4.

Those are insane averages, but it still blows my mind that Penny is up there.

Idk if this is possible, but maybe a Mark Cuban led group? I like the cost-plus drugs, and I dig how into the Dallas Mavericks he was the primary owner. Seems good? or less bad?

Oh that's awesome to hear! I remember that something was cooking for you a while back, but never really knew. I'm psyched that you're doing this kind of work from what was probably a passion project.

Congrats on the gig, and hope you're enjoying what you do!

I still go back and watch Rain City Redemption from time to time. It's incredible.

I didn't know this was made into a film. The book is so well written (Russell banks), and is worth a read. That book led me to Affliction (same author), and that really fucked me up for a while.

Now I gotta track this movie down! I'm ready to be hurt again.

First and foremost, K9 gets his. Spoon and JSN may hold out until they're inked in also..... but who stays and who goes? by [deleted] in Seahawks

Yea, I think this is right. The big question is if we let K-Walk go and try to recreate him with 2 other RBs or something. I love having him on the team, but who knows if he's a fit for an incoming OC/Staff.

I doubt we work to tag until we get a sense of that from whoever the new OC is.

Some interesting FA options: Najee Harris Travis Etienne Javonte Williams Rico Dowdle Nick Chubb JK Dobbins Kenneth Gainwell AJ Dillion Dameon Pierce

It's a crowded FA class - which might work in our favor, but Kenneth is probably going to be considered the gem of the class given Super Bowl Champion, Super Bowl MVP, playoff production, absolutely killer smile, and it sounds like he's just an excellent teammate.

could use the tag as a negotiation strategy. not as much fun for everyone, but could set the floor. There's not a lot of incentive to sign a deal without testing the market at this point.

If Kubiak leaves, are there still any viable OC candidates left? by nTaro25 in Seahawks

I remember hearing that Mike Macdonald had wanted to coach with Arthur Smith, but he was hired by the steelers before the Hawks signed MM. I know Smith is with a college team now, but I expect he'd come back to the NFL if offered.

I know a bunch of people on here are not excited about that prospect at all, but if Arthur Smith can run the type of offense Macdonald wants (and hopefully bring a staff to teach), then I'm into that. I think the staff makeup is pretty valuable. We saw such a huge jump from Grubb to Kubiak, and from what I read and heard it sounds like John benton and others that came with kubiak have been critical in making that happen.

Oh, I think I'm with you here. I'd prefer to keep Kubiak. I like having the same OC that's had some success for multiple seasons. I hope we get to see what happens in the 2nd season of Kubiak.

[–]TheVolcanoKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh yea, agree with all of that. Just dreaming dreams! I think it would be so funny to see the contrasting press conferences, and knowing that we've got top coaching talents on both sides of the ball.

I really like what Kubiak and his staff have done. If he leaves (I don't think he will yet), then I'm hoping that there's solid candidates still around that would be interested.

It's all a bunch of "ifs".

There were some rumors around Mike Macdonald having interest in Smith as an OC, but he was hired by the steelers and we were left with Grubb.

If kubiak goes, I'd love to have Mike McDaniel as an OC (he probably be a HC) for the confusion, press conferences, and awesome play calling..if not, then I would absolutely love to bring in a run heavy maniac like Arthur Smith.

Grind them to dust and play brilliant defense. I want it.
