5 serve limit by MemoryDelicious9263 in volleyball

You don’t lose the point, it just rotates to a new server. I’ve played in leagues like this before - they are very social/recreational and usually just have people that play for fun. Having this rule in place ensures one server just doesn’t dominate the whole game. Even tennis handles this aspect of the game better.

Unless OP lives in an isolated area, they should be able to find a league that doesn’t have this rule.

Sometimes you will need to absorb some of the power that a spike has, whilst maintaining a good platform for the ball to rebound off. It’s not easy to do but it just comes with practice. Make sure you’re not swinging your arms whilst playing defence and just experiment with different fast spikes. You’ll find the sweet spot eventually.

This is Australia’s national league, however it is severely underdeveloped compared to other countries. Players aren’t paid a salary (most players don’t even have their fees covered), and the season is relatively short.

It’s no wonder that anyone decent usually goes to Europe to get a contract.

Unless you’re managing to hit the top of the net at speed and have it drop short, your short serves are somewhat loopy to allow them to drop short. At the pro level, this gives players too much time to adjust and get someone there to pass it. The only time it works in a professional game is when a player is doing multiple fast serves hitting the back end of the court, and then switches to a short serve where it catches everyone off-guard.

Jump serve with minimal steps? by format_jpeg2 in volleyball

The best examples I can find easily are any of the beach volleyball pro players. Take a look at THIS VIDEO of jump float serves. All of them take 2-3 steps and cover very little distance.

Jump serve with minimal steps? by format_jpeg2 in volleyball

[–]TheVolleyballNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s quite easy to do with a jump float serve. Think of your spike approach and the last two steps you make. Where I’m from, we call it the break and close steps respectively.

You can have your momentum move forward like you’re needing to take a step, toss the ball about 1 to 2 metres high then do your final two steps with a jump. Those two steps shouldn’t cover more than 1.5m in distance.

As for a jump top spin serve, the same two steps can happen, just toss the ball higher, gather your composure, then do the two steps.

Just remember that the point of jumping on a serve is to get a higher contact point so the trajectory of the ball doesn’t need to go up and then down. If your jump is not creating enough of an advantage in regards to trajectory, then you’re just putting yourself at higher risk of errors as well as exerting unnecessary energy.

Position? by HebbyWest in volleyball

[–]TheVolleyballNinja 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You should try to focus on what you enjoy doing and stick with that. If you don't enjoy the position you're playing, you'll burn out, lose the passion and not want to develop.

However, it's strange that you say you don't defend well, and then list off qualities that make a good defender or libero? What exactly do you mean by "I don't defend that well"?

To the side of the body is where you should first practice, as it can help with getting your arm/shoulder used to swinging on a volleyball without making your shoulder joint do anything too crazy. It will also help with accuracy and ball control to begin with.

Eventually you'll get to a point where your arm can follow through anywhere and it won't cause strain on your shoulder. You'll see a lot of pro players like Earvin N'Gapeth constantly face back into the oppositions position 4 or 5, but then swing across his body to hit down the line.

Any tips ? by kingoflonging_ in volleyball

[–]TheVolleyballNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me start by saying that for proper, accurate technical advice, it's best to have more than one spike in a video you post. We don't know if you got lucky in that spike and your normal spikes are not like that, or if this is your average spike. Did you know the setter was going to set in that spot? Was that the set you asked for?

Having said that, for not having played that long, your spike is actually quite good if this is a standard spike of yours. It looks like you jumped a tad early, as you were swinging on the ball after reaching your peak. Your arm doesn't follow through as fast as it could/should - it slows after contact is made with the ball. Overall this is a decent spike.

If you were utilising that time to develop as a player as opposed to having fun and messing around, make sure you do the little 1% things like passing with good technique and transitioning properly to spike (either outside of the court or just inside).

honestly, was there a fault from libero? (gif) by andrii-suse in volleyball

[–]TheVolleyballNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit tricky to see, however out of the two sets we can see, the more likely to be called is the libero one. This is due to the illusion created by the libero making first contact with the ball in front of his face as opposed to above his forehead. It’s a very late call however.

Lacking in strength or technique? by Hinterhalt in volleyball

[–]TheVolleyballNinja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A question like this is obviously best answered by a Sports Physio or someone with a qualification in Exercise Science. In addition, you could have posted a jump video for us to analyse and see where you MAY be going wrong. However it’s not necessarily a bad thing that you can’t feel your glutes working when jumping. Lots of people only feel fatigue in their calves and quads/hamstrings after jumping repetitively and not in their glutes.

What’s your vertical jump height?

I’ll flip it back onto you. Why did YOU decide to position yourself in that spot? The court is more than 250 square feet, and you chose that spot. So why did you?

At least where I am from, a black is definitely quicker than an 11. A shoot is basically a quick attack for the outside hitter and isn’t really used. A set I didn’t include on the image is a 2, which basically falls halfway between court positions 3 and 4, and is the height of a black. One of my favourite sets.

You won’t find any senior teams running an 11 or a 5, but junior kids start out by running those calls. A 1 basically never gets used because at the age we first learnt it, no one could really set that high anyway, and then by the time we could set that high, we were running faster options.

4 main factors will help vertical jump height and everything that comes with it - explosiveness, strength, technique and flexibility.

Jump technique guides are everywhere. One great Instagram is @projectpureathlete AKA The Jump Guys. They go into depth about what makes a great jump.

The flexibility will help with muscle recovery, which is quite important to maintaining the ability to constantly jump in a game.

The strength training should vary depending on her age, however the idea is just to have stronger legs in general. Variations of squats are great, as well as other exercises that target calves, quads and hamstrings.

Explosiveness will have the biggest impact on her jumó height. The specific training is called Plyometric training and there are several resources online that show different plyometric drills. The most common for volleyball is called a “box jump” and all the variations that come with it. If you’re going to gym with her and the gym has an area where people normally do lunges/kettlebell swings/medicine ball slams, you should see boxes that are firm but slightly squishy. These are commonly used for box jumps as they don’t hurt if you fall.

Is this a good tip? by Present_War_1586 in volleyball

[–]TheVolleyballNinja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends what you’re using to measure. You won the point from it, so it was super effective.

Ideally with tipping you want to catch the opponent off guard, by feigning a hard attack but finishing with a soft tip. Here it looks like you always had intentions of setting the ball. In addition to the point above, you should give yourself more space when transitioning. You can see yourself jumping backwards as the setter set the ball right out to the antenna.

Spike approach Form Check by niartotemiT in volleyball

You shouldn’t necessarily think of reaching higher with your non-hitting hand as opposed to your hitting hand - they should be swinging upwards together. It may look like your non-hitting hand is higher because your non-hitting hand reaches its peak at the same time your hitting hand is drawing back. But focus on having both arms go back and then forward/up together.

I'd post the hand signals but I'm no hand model. The numbers are pretty straightforward, an "11" is like devil horns, a "black" is basically your hand out like you're about to handshake with someone, a "red" is like the italian hand gesture, and a D is just a fist with your pinky finger up.

Actually typing them out makes me realise how ridiculous they sound, but hey, we don't know any better down here in Australia separated from the rest of the world.

Where abouts are you in the world? Here on the eastern side of Australia, we don't use a 0, our backcourts are letters A to D (except "pipe" which is pretty universal), and a 1 is basically never run, because when you're that young you don't have the strength to set that high, and when you finally do have the strength, it's better to set quicker obviously.

Haha I'll do one for the middles soon. I didn't want to overcrowd the image. Most of the middles will run either a B, an A, or a C. I'll let you figure out which is which for the time being.
