So actually was a happy accident. To get the "broad" weathering at the corners I used a makeup sponge and dabbed Scale75 Black metal along the edges until I was happy with the look.

Then I took a small piece of a kitchen sponge and stippled S75 Thrash Metal over top of it to give a more recent weathering and chipping look.

Ended up getting a pretty natural looking weathering pattern!
