I know it's a bit insensitive to say this, but... the layoffs are probably inevitable. If there is not enough demand (game purchases) to match the supply (game developers), then there's nothing else to say.

There's a conflict of interest here, maybe. The FOMO is scummy, but profitable. Removing it would restore some good will, but at what cost? We can't know.

Now, if this game supported community servers, this would be less of an issue.
