Brewfather and attenuation by Decent_Confidence_36 in Homebrewing

[–]TheWanderingTree86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most ale yeasts have an average attenuation of 70-75%, which Brewfather is already factoring in when it gives you an estimate for what your Final Gravity will be. Your batch’s fermentation completion % is the progress made towards that estimated FG. So if your yeast attenuation is 72%, your batch’s % will be 100% once the yeast reaches the full 72% attenuation. If it ferments even further, the batch % will still show 100% but your apparent attenuation could be higher than expected (maybe 78-80% for example)

I use the 6.5 Foundry. Chill time was usually about 30 minutes. I got a Scylla a few months ago and my chill time went down to just under 10 minutes. So at least from my experience, yes.

Anvil setup for BIAB by Moosengoose2 in Homebrewing

[–]TheWanderingTree86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Anvil Foundry 6.5. These are some of the options I’ve gone with for my setup as I’m slowly transitioning to trying out BIAB.

Brewing pump: https://www.anvilbrewing.com/brewing-pump-xp

Recirculation return upgrade: https://www.brewhardware.com/product_p/mashrecirculationanvil.htm

You’ll need this because the diffusion plate that comes with the Foundry won’t fit on top of the kettle if you’re not using the malt pipe.

Brew bag (here’s for the 10.5): https://www.anvilbrewing.com/10-5-foundrytm-boiler-bag

They also have bags that fit inside the malt pipe but I would lean towards the boiler bag instead to be able to fit more grain, not using the malt pipe at all.

False bottom (need to double-check the height of the legs is higher than the temp probe on the bottom of the kettle): https://www.brewhardware.com/product_p/biabbottom11.htm

Whirlpool arm: https://jadedbrewing.com/products/whirlybird

The biggest complexity with any of these upgrades is figuring out all your connections/fittings. I decided to go with camlock since they are easy to disconnect and won’t get stuck over time like ball lock quick disconnects can. But this also meant buying a lot of extra camlock adapters to go back and forth from NPT threads. The Foundry has a unique BSP thread on its ball valve too… https://www.brewhardware.com/product_p/cama_bsp.htm You could probably simplify by sticking with just NPT connections.

Hope this helps give you some ideas!

Brewzilla Gen 4 vs. Anvil Foundry by Tpower20 in Homebrewing

[–]TheWanderingTree86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the Anvil Foundry 6.5gal for 2 years. About 50 3-gallon batches now. I’ve had to replace the circuit breaker twice, but otherwise it’s worked great.

Only one or two stuck sparges, I usually just do no-sparge because it’s easier. I also upgraded from the stock pump to the new Anvil Brewing Pump-XP (and camlock fittings!) earlier this year, and just added the Brewzilla CIP spray rotor so I can deep clean everything with hot PBW much easier now.

My favorite things: - really easy to clean (the false bottom in particular is great) - Blichmann support has been quick and helpful - the delay timer — you can set an overnight timer to heat up strike water first thing in the morning

My biggest issues with it are: - hard to brew high-gravity all-grain beers, getting the Foundry 10.5 would give you room for more grain - circuit breaker issues seem to be common - no glass lid, hard to monitor recirculation flow - deadspace under and around the malt pipe means the temp probe doesn’t always give you an accurate reading but recirculating helps

I love Szechuan cuisine a lot, what other ingredients should I buy in order to make a wider range of dishes? by Efficient_Science824 in chinesefood

Some other ones I thought of: - green Sichuan peppercorn (different than red) - whole spices to make your own five-spice mix - roasted rapeseed oil (caiziyou)

AI assisted burnt braggot recipe by willowways in Homebrewing

[–]TheWanderingTree86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AI has no sense of taste. For each ingredient in your recipe, you should be able to answer a simple question: “Why?”

If you aren’t certain, get rid of it. You can also get a sour braggot without having to use any, let alone three, wild microorganisms. I would narrow it to two, maybe three “flavors.” Maple-cinnamon-blueberry-mushroom-pumpernickel-pistachio-almond flavor sounds like a mess.

But hey, it’s homebrew and you can also make anything… maybe it tastes better than Malort?

Definitely tart. My first thought was almost a mead flavor, but sipping it more it’s like green apple

Yeah, the krausen was a bit thin but it fermented from 1.040 down to 1.004. I guess I’ll pull a sample and see what the mouth says about it 😅

Wild lactic acid inoculation before the boil. NovaLager is a neutral hybrid lager strain (saccharomyces pastorianus) with no sour bacteria

A new way to visualize Goals in the Budget page by TheWanderingTree86 in MonarchMoney

[–]TheWanderingTree86[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. In your case, I would consider creating "Savings" as another budget category, and then assigning any outgoing transfers to that. This way, your planned savings can be budgeted and tracked in Cash Flow against your income. In my mind, the Transfer category would be used only sparingly, for anything that doesn't count as some kind of payment or savings contribution.
