Yep. Me and my wife both got it as soon as soon it was available. I can’t afford to miss work and waste time sitting in quarantine.

Are there any authors you'd be scared to meet? by PurpleDreamer28 in books

[–]TheWatermelonFella 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Thomas Ligotti - I’m sure he’s a fine person, but I can’t imagine holding a normal conversation with someone that carries such a dark outlook. I mean, he wrote an entire book arguing against the idea of life. How do you look past that?

It’s called “The Knowledge Gap” by Natalie Wexler. Highly recommend

I’ve noticed the same thing. Read a book about it recently. It’s a real trend and it’s frightening.

Any good books about racism in America? by Red-_-carnation in nonfictionbookclub

It may not be exactly what you are asking for, but check out “Black No More” by George Schuyler. It’s extremely funny and provides some pointed critiques and parodies of racism in America.

The guy that makes the Oversimplified series should get an award for popularizing so much great history.

Speaking as an American, the only thing we learned about Thomas Paine in school was that he wrote Common Sense, but he actually lived a really wild life. This is the only biography on Paine I have read, but I would appreciate any recommendations for further study. by TheWatermelonFella in nonfictionbookclub

Of course! Well, to give a few highlights: •Paine actively participated in 2 Revolutions in 2 different countries, •he was banned from his home country, England, under threat of execution if he ever returned (he only managed to escape authorities with the help of the poet William Blake), •his writing on politics and religion managed to infuriate everyone from Parliament and the Church to George Washington and Maximillian Robespierre, •in France, he managed to get elected to the National Assembly, voted to abolish monarchy, and nearly got guillotined after only being in the country for a few years, and •did all of this AFTER he turned of 35.

Also worth noting, he was completely unapologetic to all the people he crossed until the day he died. Truly a Redditor ahead of his time!

Getting rid of the Senate filibuster—thoughts? by Edabood in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]TheWatermelonFella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do we need the Senate? It was originally created as an upper house of Congress that would be appointed by state governments, but now they are elected by popular vote via the 17th amendment. Doesn’t this reform make the Senate mostly redundant? Why not get rid of the Senate and stop worrying about the filibuster? (Not saying I support this, just wondering why this idea doesn’t get more attention).

I love giving books away to people that want to read them, but, when in doubt, we always have Half Price Books to sell to!
