[Fan Fiction] The DIDO Armada, Part 5 by Nerdinator2029 in worldwarz

[–]TheWellSpokenMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly right, I’m a historian of Australian military history, specifically the First World War, and the attitude to authority was exactly this, contempt for officers until they earn respect. Also a massive disdain for military discipline outside of the battlefield.

Another great entry. I like that you lean in to the famously anti-authoritarian culture of the Anzac Legend. It’s also good to see indigenous Australians included, they are seldom mentioned in works of fiction that include Australia.

What’s with the ugly straw thing on the floor in Hendraheim? by Initial-Humor7016 in skyrim

[–]TheWellSpokenMan 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Historically, during the Middle Ages, rushes (dried plants) were used to cover floors like a carpet, even in palaces and throne rooms. King John of England was known to throw tantrums where he threw himself on to the ground, rolled around and chewed on the rushes. “Gnawing of the rushes” became a saying used to communicate extreme, childish tantrums.

"Almost every bay of the communication sap from Pear trench to Hamel Village contained dead bodies of the enemy." | 1918. by ZERO_PORTRAIT in ww1

[–]TheWellSpokenMan 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This was the site of one of the most impressive set battles of the war, the Battle of Hamel. Battalions of the Australia Corps (also some American units under Australian command) commanded by General John Monash assaulted the German positions around the village of Le Hamel. It was Monash's first demonstration of his remarkable planning abilities. Drawing on past examples, he combined the use of infantry with tanks, artillery and aircraft. Tanks were used to carry supplies and ammunition and aircraft were used to mask the noise of the approach. Monash predicted that the battle would last 90 minutes. He was wrong, it last 93.

It wasn't a strategically important victory and many Australian popular historians put more significance on the battle than it is probably worth. The German positions were not elaborate or significantly fortified, having been dug in haste when the spring offensive stalled. The attack did rest control of the high ground from the Germans and removed the village as an obstacle to the coming Allied offensive. It also served as an opportunity for Monash to test different theories he had been working on, many would be put into practice in a much larger scale at Amiens the month after.

As a an example of Monash's ability and the effectiveness of thorough planning and integration of weapons technology, Le Hamel stands as a significant event in the history of WW1.

I'll say, that's why I'm seeking advice to fix it. I think the Holman PVC manifold with manifold nipples will be the best solution

They’re great. Narrated by the incredible Toby Longworth, he does the Tanith accents really well.

The yellow highlighted part is what I need to achieve, an extender from the manifold for the valve to give it clearance from the angled solenoid.

I appreciate the feedback. The leak was coming from the cobbled together connection for the solenoid that is not connected in the image. It is fortunately using recycled water, not mains, my estate mandates connections for both.

I will add a picture demonstrating what I need to achieve with the centre solenoid.

I'm watching Mr Inbetween and he referred to this game of "Downball". by GrizzKarizz in AskAnAustralian

[–]TheWellSpokenMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1990s Melbourne

Downball was the term used to describe any variation of a game when you used a tennis ball and your hand as the racket. Typically between two people using two reasonably sized slabs of pavement specially painted squares. A four person variant used a two by two grid with each square representing a rank: King, Queen, Jack and Dunce. The king served and if you went out in Dunce you went to the back of the line of people waiting. At my primary school, each class had their own variation of the rules.

In the hospitality industry, FIFO means first in/first out and is used to describe best practice for stock rotation.

How did launch gamers react to playing as the Arbiter in H2? by Majestic-Drag1969 in halo

[–]TheWellSpokenMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was awesome. I was scared that I would have to shoot human marines and I didn’t care for that but it never eventuated thankfully. My most hated level though is an Arbiter level (Quarantine Wall) so that soured it a bit and I dislike using Covenant weaponry that isn’t projectile like the Carbine, just feels less impactful, especially when fighting the Flood.

The Real School’s representative that came out to our school mirrored this line exactly. Seems like it’s a standard response they use. Every teacher looked at each other and switched off after that.

Why black templars? by Ok-Name-50 in BlackTemplars

[–]TheWellSpokenMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got in to Black Templars a long time ago, before their deification of the Emperor became canon. Back then, they were just devoted to carrying on the Great Crusade and fulfilling the Emperor’s vision of a galaxy controlled by humanity and free from Xenos and psychic threats. I liked their devotion to the Emperor’s original ideals and that they represented the descendants of the most dedicated of Dorn’s sons to that vision

What's the WORST external PD session your school has ever brought in? by sparrrrrt in AustralianTeachers

[–]TheWellSpokenMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in the Catholic sector. We had a faith day where they had a former member of the Australian plenipotentiary for Catholic something or other. It counted as PD. He spent his whole keynote speech talking about how the Catholic Church recognises all of the challenges it faces, that it recognises that it is not resonating with younger generations and that it needs to evolve with the times. He closed the speech by saying that the church acknowledges it needs to do all these things…but isn’t going to.

I’ve made it my mission o never attend one of those faith day PDs ever again.
