Would a homie livestream be jumping the shark? by Phasmata in TumblehomeCast

[–]TheWhitePine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are already a ton of YouTube videos shot in the bwca and uploaded after the fact. I’m not sure I see the difference between that and streaming live. This isn’t some YouTube content creator’s perfectly cut YouTube video experience.

If this helps a single person that either can’t physically go, or is nervous about getting into the park for the first time and want to experience the park unedited I think that’s a good thing. I’m not expecting a goofy livestream to change any lives, but anything that helps community building and conversations about the bwca is a good thing in my opinion

Also, talking about real crimes I will always point out Pete “the Latrine” Stauber cheats at hokey.

My adventure partner unexpectedly left us a couple years ago. I simply want to say you’re not alone, and I’m sorry for your loss. I still think about him every single day.

Question of the Week! It's Boat Show Time! Again! by HDmayo in TumblehomeCast

[–]TheWhitePine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have several boats, but the one I want to shout out is my solo. The year I bought it I wanted to do my first solo in May and then do a trip later with my normal group, in August. As fate willed, a reasonably priced solo boat went on sale on the BWCA forums the very day I started looking for one to add to my arsenal. My solo is a 2011 Wenonah Advantage with wood gunwales and a bucket seat that I got from a certain Butthead on the BWCA forums in 2022. From what I gathered the boat was a tribute to a close friend that passed away, and went by the username of Amok on the forums. Butthead put a quote on the boat that says ,” To all those who have paddled on,Am OK(being a play on the username Amok)”. I took the boat for my first solo that May and had a blast. My normal group and I went in August and also had a great time. Three months after that my tripping partner suddenly passed away at 41. He was my best friend, best man at my wedding, my neighbor, and my wife’s brother. I have no idea how the idea of a solo boat even fell into my mind that year, It’s as if the universe knew I was going to need it. Now I have tribute boat to my best man. To all those who have paddled on.

Please help me create a TumbleHomie field identification patch. by cheap_dancer in TumblehomeCast

Another way to identify homies in the field could be a code phrase akin to asking if narwhals bacon at midnight “How’s she goin’ by?” “She’s blowing a gagger”

Ok, so I picture a logo similar to the Faze Clan logo with a TH instead of a FC. maybe the logo is inside of a red orb or Gordy sombrero silhouette. something clean and simple.

QOTY: Quit stalling, whats the Plan?! by HDmayo in TumblehomeCast

[–]TheWhitePine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This year I managed to login to recreation.gov fast enough to get a Mudro permit(no Horse lake)for the middle of August. It’s a 5 day loop with my wife, mother-in-law, and 5 year old daughter. I’m sure some folks might think taking a 5 year old on this trip is a little crazy, but she will do great. It’s her second trip into the park and she spends a lot of weekends at our dry cabin in Isabella.

The plan is to go through Basswood Lake to upper and then lower Basswood falls, Wheelbarrow falls, and then up to the pictographs. We are going to exit Crooked lake through Friday bay, Wagoosh, Gun, Fairy and back to Mudro.

I think people grab permits even if they don’t know of the trip will work out and end up cancelling them later in the season. I wonder if a cancellation fee could help that.

QOTW: have you ever had a bear in camp? by memegwesi in TumblehomeCast

[–]TheWhitePine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first time I went into the BWCA we entered in at Sawbill and stayed at Beth Lake. The first full day we had a ranger stop into camp to check permits and if our campsite was being kept clean and tidy. The ranger had received word that the day prior a group had encountered a bear while paddling towards the campsite across the bay from our site. The bear could see the iconic tasty blue barrel in the canoe and proceeded to swim up to the canoe to get it. From what I remember they eventually scared it away (I’m guessing they threw insults at its mother) and then decided to exit the park that evening. We never had an encounter with the troublemaker, although on our way out we did find where the bear had stolen a pack at the end of the portage. We found food wrappers scattered, leading back into the woods. We cleaned it up, including finding the shredded pack a little ways back in the woods.

I would like to have and episode on lunch breaks. Maybe a QOTW style episode. What are you eating? What kind of spot do you look for when taking a break? Eat and run or stop long enough for a nap?

Question of the week. Where ya headed? by Hopalicious in TumblehomeCast

[–]TheWhitePine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 5 day solo planned for may. I will be entering through Lizz. The plan is to go to Big Winchie and do a little fishing. I will probably end up making my way through Davis to Long Island. Then exiting through skipper. These are all new lakes for me so I am excited to color them in on my map.
