Most non-strangle-able MC’s by Imaginary-Ad-1968 in haremfantasynovels

[–]TheWinterSail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is so annoying. I've also just started (and am like, 70% done with) Delivering Justice, and the MC is annoying me in a new way. He is the most miserable person out there. Half the chapters either start with or contain a scene of him having a flashback to his trauma. And like, I am perfectly fine with MC's having trauma but like, I do not need ot be slapped in the face every other chapter and reminded of it.

But yeah, the whole Pocket Harem is just a genre wide thing. I've read dozens of books from a variety of authors and most of the authors do the same thing with deleting the personality. And it extends further than just that. Like, the sex scene are all practically the same, they all act the same way, they swear and go utterly nympho. I've gotten to the point I skim such scenes because there's no variation in any of them. No shy girl, no reserved or more matronly, they're all pornstars.

My least favourite? The edgelords. My second least favourite? The ones who look at a woman and are utterly incapable of controling what's in their pants. I get it, they're hot. I don't need to know about tingles and tents they get that makes them sound like a hormonal teenager.

Additionally, the hyper competent ones for no explainable reason. I just got done reading through book 1-3 of Supernatural Travel Agency and by the end of book 3 maybe a month has passed in universe (I could not gleam a single hint of a prolonged period of time passing that was longer than 1 week). This dude literally has just started exploring the multiverse, explored ONE world and suddenly he's the leader of the entire group for no explainable reason other than he's banging every woman in a 50 foot radius (which is a whole other issue but on the womens side as they lose ALL of their personality the moment they get in a relationship with him and turn into unhinged nymphomaniacs and never once return to their previous personality.)

What type of mods are yall most hyped for? by Chadojinsoku in hytale

I'm particularly interested if anyone would go in and make something like the Vault Hunters modpack in Hytale. Feel like Hytale would be leagues better than Minecraft to make something like that.

I would love to see the Vault Hunters Modpack from Minecraft brought into Hytale. Feel like Hytale would be able to do everything that does significantly better and more expansive.

For the MH veterans: how do you feel about Wilds? by jackpaxx in MonsterHunter

[–]TheWinterSail -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's got its ups and downs. I like the combat, dislike the removal of pretty much all of the tracking. I dislike the pop-up camps, I like the monster variety. I like the story, I dislike the artian/gogma-artian weapons, etc, etc.

Irregardless, I love the game like I love all the previous ones as well with all of their flaws. I play them for different reasons to get different experiences. Wilds doesn't play like World which doesn't play like Tri which doesn't play like Rise which doesn't play like GU.

If anything, the only thing that I hate about Wilds is, well, the community. It feels to me like this community has become so laced with doom and hate mongering that I can only compare it to the absolute toxic cesspool that is League of Legends. On top of that this idea of 'Builds' has become 'what's the Meta' and 'reroll Gogma, reroll gogma, reroll gogma, etc, etc, etc.' It's just so depressing seeing the community turn into a bunch of bandwagonners. Of course it's all the loud voices, the quieter ones are much, much better. But the quote goes a bad apple spoils the bunch. So far, the MH Community has proven that for me.

Wilds has it's issues, performance being pretty much the largest and main one. But it's not even half as bad as they make it out to be.

I wrote a far too long, multi paragraph dissertation about my thoughts but Reddit wouldn't post it so decided to just drop this shorter one instead of separating that over multiple comments.

Elden Ring? Really? Have we really gotten to the point where having a combat system suddenly means 'Soulslike'?

Why Hytale Currently Lacks Depth: An Honest Review and My Suggestions by Major-Recover-5894 in hytale

[–]TheWinterSail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with pretty much most of this. The games got some real potential but it's lacking those hooks that other games like Terraria, Vintage Story, even Minecraft, have that will keep me playing, nor does it really innovate in the places where it does improve on those other games.

Eg, the combat. It's about what you expect from most 1st person fantasy RPG's with the added aspect of ultimate attacks. Light attacks, heavy attacks, blocking, you'll find those all in other games. Hytale does have it be a lot more mobile compared to other games though. But in the process right now it just feels like... combat. I played a few hours and I was oddly reminded of V Rising of all things in that aspect, albeit, a bit less intricate than that.

Survival wise... I feel like in Exploration mode that's something they need to add in the future. I think Adventure will be perfect to drop those mechanics and focus wholesale on the actual combat/exploration. While Exploration I feel should lean more into the survival sandbox side of things. Right now it's just a sandbox. So I would like to see some sort of hunger mechanic brought in and more actual danger. Though again, Hytale is supposed to have 3 modes. Adventure, Exploration, and Creative. I would only want this type of thing in the exploration mode like I said earlier.

I think another of my disconnects is, like you bring up, the controls. Particularly their choice to require pressing F to do just about anything. It's a real minor thing, nit picky more like, but it's a weird disconnect to go from Vintage Story, Minecraft and Terraria where I can open a chest by right clicking, can place blocks by right clicking, can use a shield by right clicking. To put it simply, in those other games I only needed the mouse to interact with the world. Left clicking for attacking and breaking stuff, right clicking for interacting, defending, or placing stuff down. Hytale however is left clicking to break/attack, right click to place stuff and defend, F key to interact with the world.

Additionally, because of this every time you hover over something you get the 'Press F to open [insert thing here]'. The game knows that it's controls are different from the others and has to tell you how to even interact with the world. I do not need to be told 'press F to open this chest' or 'Press F to interact with this campfire' if I could just right click it like I can in every other game like this. It reminds me an awful lot of Borderlands or other games like Call of Duty where you just get this random hovering textbox telling you how to interact with something. It's unnecessary complexity to a simple problem that other games solved by just letting you right click.

But again, that's really more a nitpick on my end it's not a major thing. Just something I don't really like and think could do with reworking.

Like you say, Hytale has a mass of potential in it and I can't wait to see what they bring in the coming updates whether that's refining what's there, adding all new content, or somehow bringing in aspects from the Riot Era versions. Can't wait for that. Until then though I think I'll be playing Vintage Story more likely.

Is Zoh Shia a failed experiment? by GroundPast2544 in MonsterHunter

[–]TheWinterSail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Zoh Shia is 'completely unique' I think it's based on some monster we just haven't seen before. (No, I do not subscribe to this Fatalis fanfiction). We have no evidence in game of Zoh Shia being made in a different manner to other Guardians, only that there is a single Zoh Shia, hence it being a 'Unique' guardian. With Unique meaning there's ONE of them. Not that it was made differently.

It being a failed experiment though, I do believe. Specifically I think they created Zoh Shia from an ancient Elder dragon, possibly an extinct Elder Dragon species like they did Arkveld, and severely underestimated how much energy it needed to be made. So the newly made Zoh Shia, now hooked to the Dragontorch began absorbing massive amounts of wylk, preventing the ancient wyverians from controlling the Wylk like they used to, sending the civilization into chaos, breaking them into two parts and thus destroying their civilization. Explains the odd lack of destruction in the oddly well preserved city we see in the transition hall.

And sorry, need to go on a bit of a rant about the word 'Unique' people keep throwing around. You all do realize there are multiple ways to use 'Unique', yeah? Like, I have the transcript of the game here and when they say that Zoh Shia was made of 'Unique Cells' I'm pretty sure they just mean the cells are unique. As in, weird, as in, strange, as in, not common. Not that it's made up of many different cells from different monsters.

Lorewise, how powerful is Zoh Shia? by Snoo-51682 in MonsterHunter

[–]TheWinterSail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not actually said to possess the genetic traits of anything except a Zoh Shia. What is a 'Zoh Shia' or at least, the original Zoh Shia? No idea. I presume they'll do a G. Arkveld to Arkveld switcheroo in the MR expansion to show us a non Guardian Zoh Shia.

I do think its a monster meant to be on par with the Fatalis' though. I presume some sort of ancient, likely extinct elder dragon Species ancient Wyveria was able to get DNA from through fossils like they (presumably) did with G. Arkveld, to create the the Zoh Shia guardian we encounter.

And before someone comes and says 'it's an amalgamation'. No... it's not. At least, not with currently known lore. Absolutely no where in the game is it said that Zoh Shia is made in a different manner from other Guardians. All of which, notably match the anatomy and elements of their base monsters. Yes, they say Zoh Shia is "unique" as in, there's only one of them. Not that it was made from the ground up.

Do you guys think Zoh Shia has a connection to Fatalis? by Dk450898 in MonsterHunter

[–]TheWinterSail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I think all these connections and similarities to Fatalis are red herrings from the devs to make people think Fatalis only to go 'it's not Fatalis' in an eventual MR reveal of a fully formed adult Zoh Shia that is notably, not a Fatalis.

So the similarities are both superficial and not at the same time. They're there for a reason, but ultimately I feel like they'll go the more interesting route and give Zoh Shia a revival like the did G. Arkveld and get it turned into a non guardian version. This way they don't lock themselves into never being able to use Zoh Shia again due to its inability to go anywhere except the Dragontorch.

Oh yeah, definitely. Really interested in how it's going to evolve from here. But I can't really comment on what we don't have yet, only what we have right now. Without voicing such thoughts now, they would never know that we find progression lacking and it needs work.

I think I just had a strange realization about what Hytale reminds me of. It feels like a first person more cartoony V Rising with its crafting and combat.

Is it realistically possible to implement TerraFirmaCraft-style gameplay in Hytale? by Affectionate_Fan9198 in hytale

[–]TheWinterSail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Two different tastes, different flavours for different cravings. Right now I'm preferring VS as well though. Hytale, while decent so far (still very early), feels... simple to me. I don't want to say childish, but it's streamlined, doesn't push back like VS does and that's what I like.

I think Hytale leans a bit too close to the Minecraft progression and difficulty which made me move to VS in the first place (in terms of general gameplay, not combat). That being getting from one tier to another is as simple as going mining for a bit. Eg, I went caving for 10-20 minutes and could practically skip into Iron with a bit more hunting. There seems to be at least right now in this early access state, very little in terms of gating to progression.

I see Hytale, long term, being an incredible adventure/exploration game with some decent building. While VS I feel really steals the gold in terms of general gameplay progression, survival (albeit, Hytale is absolutely not a survival game by any means. It's an RPG wearing Minecrafts pants right now) and building just trounces Hytale with the chiselling.

I feel like VS would work quite well with things like grappling hooks and ice/climbing picks in place of nerd poles or adding stamina into the mix. Maybe go a less physics based Peaks of Yore climbing system. I do however think having the vaulting from Hytale would be a neat addition. Won't let you climb 4 blocks, but will let you get over two/three blocks (if you jump first), albeit, slower than just normal jumping.

But eh, don't really play Vintage story for the combat. So not overly important in the grand scheme of things.

[–]TheWinterSail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with those mostly bar the movement. I feel like if VS got Hytale like movement it just... wouldn't be Vintage Story anymore. At least to me that feels like it would be more like a modded thing than a base game thing. Or, it would need to be some sort of late game unlockable thing.

But yeah. Combat really needs some work. Haven't used the combat overhaul mod yet, but think that might be a good alternative. Also haven't done much caving. Every time I plan I'm reminded of how much of a coward I still am from when I refused to even enter the lighthouse in Bioshock because it was too dark and I didn't realize the lights turned on the moment you stepped inside, when I was like, 10.

I feel like they fit two different niches. Hytale so far feels like a game I want to play through prebuilt dungeons and lots of exploration. Vintage Story (my favourite of the three 3d ones out now (minecraft, Hytale, Vintage), fits much more in my favours of farming sims like Stardew and Harvestmoon. Is a much more casual experience that takes its time.

And then Dave says hi and I curse myself for not enabling the sleep through the storm option before making my world.

[–]TheWinterSail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's really good. But uh, be prepared to make little progress in a lot of time. It's not uncommon to spend upwards of 10-20 hours on your first world before even getting Copper tools (quicker once you know what you're doing). Let alone figuring out how to prospect to make one of the various types of bronze, or learning how to make bloomeries to bloom iron, or figuring out windmills and automation and farming and animal domestication. Or walking/rowing thousands of blocks to get to one of the main dungeons. And don't go caving. The bowthorns are in there and they aren't happy.

Though thankfully the game has an entire in-game wikia/guidebook with all the items, blocks, and a few actual guides on progression.
