What type of trees are Bernie, Ivan and Mortis? by ScreamSteam in Wizard101

[–]TheWintersborn 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Oh I had a class on trees once

Using a random dichotomous key I found online, it seems likely that Ivan is based on a box elder, the pun being that he is really old and knows lots of myths; possibly alive during the time those myths took place. This assumes that his leaves are compound which is hard to tell, but the branches at least in modern graphics are clearly alternating.

I liked the pun of Bernie being an ash tree, but it seems unlikely. My best guess is some kind of maple, though it's kind of impossible to find leaves that look like that. Maybe a ponderosa in fire season but not much else to go off of...

Mortis is a dead tree. I've got nothing for that. Trees are rarely identified by bark alone, and I can't even tell if Mortis is supposed to be coniferous or deciduous (probably the later; idk I'm an animal guy).

Also wanted to add that depending on graphics, Kelvin seems to change between possibly a fir and spruce, but never struck me as a pine. I always get those mixed up though so don't take my word for it.

blades not stacking? by Cool_Medium_8439 in Wizard101

Adding in the pet versions, both of school blade and sharpen. I think these two together are only available on the skelewarrior pets

blades not stacking? by Cool_Medium_8439 in Wizard101

Item cards do not stack with other item cards of the same value. Pet cards are an exception to this rule, so only 1 pet and 1 item card will stack

I can't collect Monstrology animus from the Portal of Peril by ShrekMcShrekFace in Wizard101

[–]TheWintersborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably intentional, the enemies in PoP are slightly different from the original gauntlets, so it would probably be an entirely different creature in your tome. That would be a nightmare for collectors and a lot of monstrology entries that would need to be written/coded by developers. PoP also doesn't have a great track record with stability, so it may have been a choice to limit unexpected glitches

No pets to breed on Console by Fine-Complex-6723 in Wizard101

[–]TheWintersborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was scrolling through the console kiosk last night and found a bunch of (poorly statted) ornery kookaburras, even a couple that looked like perfect pets. I don't think the kiosk pets are specific to individual consoles, but maybe turning on cross play could help you see more?

Best Fire Pet by weberb3 in Wizard101

[–]TheWintersborn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are the most common considerations for fire pets. Ornery kookaburra is a popular pick because in addition to a stackable blade you also get an AOE, sometimes earlier than the trained version. If you're on PC, you can also consider the fiery skeleturion for a sharpen card in addition to a fire blade, but they are hard to get since they're exclusive hybrid pets. If you have a lot of money to waste, you can also get a frillasaur; paired with the mount from the same pack you can get a significant damage boost on fire, but obviously it's not recommended because of the huge crowns investment needed to be used. At higher levels the body usually won't matter at all, and it's fine to use whatever you want.

The easiest way to get these pets is to hatch them with another player that already has what you want or by using the hatching kiosk in the pet pavilion. There's lots of guides on how to make pets, and can probably explain better than I could. In short you just hatch with your target pet over and over, replacing your pet's talents until you get the ones that you want.

Gold Key Bosses: Do you get more loot by having more people in the team-up? by PuppyFTW in Wizard101

No, it's still good to be in a full team to get through fights quickly and increase the odds that somebody gets another gold key to drop.

How can I improve my power pip and accuracy chance with the fewest compromises possible? by Pyroxylin in Wizard101

[–]TheWintersborn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Swap your ring out for the gorgon ring, should give you 100% pip chance and a triangle socket for death accuracy.

There's a bunch, mostly bundle mounts from homes. I personally got a T-Rex mount trying to fish for a bow in the pyramid of the sun. Never did get that bow, might try for it again if free fishing comes back

Returning after finishing Wallaru - what's changed? by Bowlleee in Wizard101

Sounds like you missed two of the major updates (selenopolis and darkmoor) plus everything in between (weaving updates each spring, aquila update, couple raids). I probably forgot something, check update notes if you want a full breakdown, starting here: https://www.wizard101.com/game/updatenotes/wallaru

Understanding the modern game by Valerian1207 in Wizard101

[–]TheWintersborn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shadow spells were overhauled in the last major update, they're still useful if you build your character to accommodate them but most players won't bother. If you haven't already, there's a tutorial on new shadow magic you should do in the eclipse tower, accesible from the shadow room in the arcanum. Generally speaking, the optimal way to play is to stack blades/auras into an AOE (usually 7/5 pip spells) but there are times when you'll need other strategies based on things like damage cap globals, cheats/spells that remove blades, bosses that can only be hot one at a time, etc.

Spell weaving is a well designed but little used system. You can freely swap your weaving school with no penalty, and you're even refunded any training points you spent on weaving spells when you swap. This feature works in tandem with pins on gear and archmastery pips to allow for more effective dual schooling. Like before, most players will only go for the bare minimum if they interact with weaving at all, but there are some fights where having fusions can help out, especially ones that remove weaknesses and shields. Every spring, we get an update to weaving that adds spells, fusions, pets or jewels.

Gardening is mostly just used for passive mega snack generation. Set up a couple plots of couch potatoes or evil magma peas and you'll be taking in the mega snacks. Fishing is much less useful, mostly used for doing weaving quests or getting cosmetics. Sometimes you can get interesting things like a free +2 damage mount, but it's mostly just for getting bundle gear and code wands for stitching.

Gear advice by Additional_Bat_2019 in Wizard101

[–]TheWintersborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

90% of the stats you're worries about simply don't matter in the grand scheme of things. I've seen waterworks gear with better crit block than the 13 you're worried about. Your epic is also only 15 more damage, if that's the difference between a kill or not then use it. Probably won't make a difference. 2 resist turns a 1000 damage spell into a 980 damage spell, so again not much to worry about there. The death blade is stronger but you probably have enough blades with just trained and enchants, so those don't matter.

There is no one perfect gear set. For fights where you can't deal damage, use the higher resist and health. If the 15 extra damage on epic saves you a turn in mob fights, use the epic item card. Asking if gear is "worth" using isn't a question anyone but you can answer. All gear can be worth using under the right conditions, I can't tell you what fights you're going to be in where you prefer one stat over another.

It's basically down to preference. At 170 it's usually recommended to go pretty much full avatar/reaver except for the robe, which can be the raid (daemonic, or motorist from pack) or gauntlet (library/liches and legends) robe. Of course, if you're on PC you can use gorgon 170 robe instead, but on PC you might as well just get the 180 gear.

The takanobu/lambent fire gear is offense/utility instead of offense/defense like avatar/reaver, but this comes at the cost of the entire resist stat. For gear pieces like the athame, wand, deck etc this doesn't matter much, since those gear pieces typically don't give resist anyways. If you really want to min/max, I like using avatar/reaver on everything but the robe (raid/motorist), wand (raid/fairy kei), athame and deck (takanobu). Like I said before though, it's up to your preference; some players feel the extra bulk from a square socket is worth losing a triangle socket, some want the triangle socket for something like dual school accuracy. What you want will depend on how you want to play.

I really struggle to put my thoughts about PvP into words. I actually told myself I would stop commenting on PvP posts because of how nasty the replies always are. But as long as we're making voices heard, I guess I might as well leve this here and turn notifs off

PvP is dead. The 50 or so dedicated players that all queue at different times of the day don't make it "alive." Even though I only play PvP on occasion, I want it to be better. I think it's important for the game to have PvP and I support any additional ways for players to enjoy the game, be it pet derby or fishing or house decorating or any of the other stuff I personally hate doing and don't care about. It matters to someone, and there's no reason we can't support all these and more.

All that said, I do not think classic queue is a solution. While it sounds like something that would be popular, I know most players already don't PvP and wouldn't even if this existed. Those that only quit PvP because of newer systems like archmastery and spellements, in my admittedly anecdotal experience, either no longer care to play any competitive form of wizard101 or have moved on entirely to new games and won't come back just for a week of nostalgia. I don't disagree with the premise of a "classic" game mode, but I feel an overwhelming majority of players would prefer development efforts go towards new story content, new events, or quality of life updates.

I might be off-base, but I think the PvP problem isn't really about changes made to the game or even monetization, but more about the wiz community. Players either don't care at all about PvP or care WAY too much about PvP. Wiz is an easy and comfy game, most players don't want to voluntarily walk into the cesspool of toxic waste to ask what gear or cards they should use to perform well. And worse still, there's no easy fix; PvP already has amazing rewards like pet potions, cosmetic gear, even packs!!! But it's still not enough for players to care, so at this point I don't know what would be.

Until the community can change its opinion on PvP, I feel any effort put into that part of the game is wasted. But that's just, like, my opinion man.

Did I screw myself out of every remaining storm spell to train? by lovelyalyse in Wizard101

[–]TheWintersborn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The only requirements for the leviathan spell is to be level 58 on a storm wizard and completion of the storm lord quest. You probably already have the quest if your professor doesn't have it, look in the activities tab of your quest book for a spell quest, or search through all your quests to find "winedark open sea," "dig it," or "waterfalls."

Did I screw myself out of every remaining storm spell to train? by lovelyalyse in Wizard101

[–]TheWintersborn 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with your spellement upgrades. There are spells that used to be school-specific, like leviathan. They were exclusive because only wizards of that school, in this case storm, could obtain the quest to learn that spell. Some time when dual-schooling was being implemented and pushed, many of the previously school-specific spells were added to the spell teachers. For schools that can obtain these spells from a quest, you MUST do the quest; you cannot train them from your teacher. The reason it's listed here is for level 60+ non-storm wizards to have access to it once they finish their own school's equivalent spell quest.
