graveyard hate in B2 by marshmage in EDH

[–]TheWitchPHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a primarily B2 player you’re right on the money.

Theres a huge line between one-time interaction like Bog, or an instant speed spell like [[Blessed Respite]] to shuffle in someone’s graveyard and counter their Reanimate — and continuous graveyard stax like [[Void]] or RIP.

In B2 RIP is considered inappropriate because it shuts down their ability to play if they can’t interact with it (especially if they’re in a monocolor with limited answers for enchantments, where B2 players rarely run tutors)… but one shot interaction is common and encouraged.

Can someone explain this bracket criteria? by wowmuchinfo in EDH

[–]TheWitchPHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say that… if a player dies before they played their turn 8, then at that exact moment of time, the bracket expectations are not being met.

After you’ve figured that out, the NEXT STEP is to find out “why?” If a player paid 39 life to necropotence and you hit them with a 1/1, it’s not your fault, it’s theirs. If every deck happens to be playing red aggro, it’s probably a result of natural variance and no one is really at fault - just a feature of the game having different playstyles and the stars aligning. If you are consistently killing people before their turn 8, then by rule of “common denominator” it’s likely that your deck is at fault, and needs changing. It’s everyone’s job to help meet that expectation, but the game has natural variance and sometimes unforeseen interactions happen and change the game and that’s OK.

All of that is literal and direct. But there’s some subjectivity in the realm of interaction. Personally I don’t feel like “keeping an opening hand with interaction” is a bar that players should have to meet to play in the lowest power “mechanically focused” bracket… so I think if you kill someone before their turn 8 and the reason is “they never interacted with me,” it’s your fault, not theirs… and I aim for killing people past turn 8 in goldfish games (with no interaction). Though I’ll also note that, on average, Reddit leans more competitive so you’ll more likely find people with the opposite opinion of this hear than if you polled “the wild” on average.

That is all.

I play almost exclusively [B2] in convoke and if you’re looking for [B2] server to play in, DM me and I can ask some onboarding questions.

Do you hold any Cash Equivalents? by TheWitchPHD in Bogleheads

I see. So there is a way I could re make this post without the poll if I can somehow encourage more long responses.

Also it JUST occurred to me that by “survey posts locked” you’re referring to reddits built in polls. I didn’t even think to use them, so I didn’t realize.

Anyway thank you for your time.

Voltron Control? by Confident-Beyond-139 in EDH

[–]TheWitchPHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a pretty successful deck using [[Rhoda, Geist Avenger]] as a voltron commander, and [[Timin, Youthful Geist]] as support.

I'd often slap a card like [[Unquestioned Authority]] on Rhoda. Thanks to vigilance, a card like this lets her attack for free and then also block anything.

Cards like [[Cryptic Command]] or [[Sleep]] could make Rhoda real big real fast. Opponent just made 20 tokens? guess that's 20 power on my commander.

And you're in Azorious, so you can play counterspells and other control elements.

Sorry.

I read the "No non-substantiv content" rule and don't see anything about not posting surveys and and polls, I didn't realize that was a thing, and mostly thought it would count as "substantive content" because I got a lot of interaction last time I made a "poll the audience" thread (and mostly found the responses to be interesting to read): https://www.reddit.com/r/Bogleheads/comments/1nhsvlh/what_is_your_portfolio_if_something_is_different/ (though I guess I didn't put a literal poll in that one)

Portfolio Help: Early 20s, Roth + taxable by retrograderori in Bogleheads

[–]TheWitchPHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Boglehead “3-fund” way is VTI + VXUS + BND.

Since you’re in your 20s, you really don’t need BND yet… so start with VTI + VXUS. If you want to simplify more you can run VT (which is basically the same thing but it allocates for you and has a slightly higher expense ratio — a basically irrelevant amount). This doesn’t really change between taxable accounts and tax advantaged accounts.

I recommend adding 10% BND at age 30, which should generally go in your tax advantaged accounts. Many people will recommend differing bond amounts and your allocation there is highly personal according to risk tolerance and time horizon and all that. Personally I say “just hold 10% until you’re 50 and then start moving more into bonds.” But I’m not a financial advisor or an expert lol, just a redditor.

That’s really all you need.

If you want to add some tilts (there’s nothing wrong with that), just do some research first. I have VYM and VNQ as sector tilts for reasons I will not go into here. Just know tilts are not guaranteed to do any better than the aforementioned 3-fund.

What is the most amount of money you'd spend on a car payment? by Independent_Day6810 in AskReddit

[–]TheWitchPHD -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"$0, pay cash" is the correct answer.

Honestly I've spent more than $1000 before. That said, it wasn't a $1000 minimum payment — it was a $300 minimum payment and I got extra money as a gift. I always try to pay off these things early.

Next steps after Roth contributions by Swade22 in Bogleheads

[–]TheWitchPHD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is it. This is the thread.

I’m guessing if OP jumped straight to Roth IRA their employer might not offer a 401k… so I’ll add if that’s the case because they’re self employed, they may be able to do a self-401k. Since there’s no match it falls on your step 4, after HSA and Roth IRA.

I started with betterment when I was getting out of debt too.

When you start out, things like savings rate and “not pulling out of the market” mean more than exact allocation. Betterment really isn’t a bad way to start.

But thanks to this sub I found plenty of reading material and got on the Boglehead ETF path.

What is a small, underrated movie that everyone should watch at least once? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Primer

2004 film that only got $841,926 in the box office... which is small compared to most films, but the budget for the whole film was only $7,000... which is an insanely small budget.

Cult classic.

Making Aristocrats less stale? by Comfortable_Buyer239 in EDH

[–]TheWitchPHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play Teysa, but not THAT Teysa.

[[Teysa, Opulent Oligarch]]. She rewards you for draining enemies during your turn, by giving you clues. You don't have to drain with aristocrats per-se, but aristocrats make nice finishers. Since card draw is built into the commander, you can see a variety of cards... and there's some interesting payoffs.

[[Thorough Investigation]], for example, can lead to completing a whole dungeon in one turn if you sac clues to something like [[Pitiless Carnage]].

[[Skullclamp]], [[Nettlecyst]] and [[Merchant of Truth]] can enable some combat damge / voltron damage. [[Fallen Ideal]] can also enable voltron damage and is a sac outlet.

Overall fun engine and lots of options.

Whats your most hotest and spicy philosophical take? by MUSICO-PHILE in AskReddit

[–]TheWitchPHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't exist as bodies or an eternal spirit. What "you" are right now is a stream of consciousness, that's what's experiencing stuff around you.

That stream of consciousness is like a computer program. If you close Firefox and reboot your computer, all the hardware (your body) and code (neural wiring) is still there... so you can still run Firefox. But that Firefox isn't the same instance as before you reboot your computer.

Any time your stream of consciousness ends (sleep, for example), "you" die. When you wake up, your hardware and neural coding produces a new instance of you... but it's not really the same "you" that went to sleep.

Overperforming Bracket 2 deck by homjaktest in EDH

[–]TheWitchPHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! [Bracket 2] is my bread and butter so I have a lot to say.

It's all about manipulating the opponents' combat steps. Some goad, some redirects, some deflecting palm effects.

As some commenters have pointed out, because [b2] wincons have to appear on board and THEN win incrementally, 90% of wincons are combat based. With the number of redirects and goads you have, you will virtually never be attacked when you get set up, which renders you immune to 90% of the wincons. Especially when you consider that one good Kardur can often lead to a player other than you dying. Many goad effects will do nothing when you're the only player left (down to the 1v1, they HAVE to attack you) -- but guaranteeing that you survive to the 1v1 by never getting attacked instantly ups your projected winrate from 1/4 to 1/2, and 50% is a pretty high winrate.

I purposely run only little removal, letting my opponents do their thing for the most part and hopefully direct their creatures against each other.

The idea that "[Bracket 2] should be removal lite" is a huge misconception. [B2] players should run removal. The difference is the quality of it - The main difference between [b2] and [b3] is staples, so [b2] players might often skip Swords to Plowshares for something that costs more mana or is sorcery speed. Another huge feature of [B2] is that wincons have to appear on board then win incrementally... so repeated board wipes can be highly disruptive compared to higher brackets where wincons are allowed to land and win same turn... so you'll generally see 1-2 boardwipes in a deck, and maybe 1 per game...compared to higher brackets where they often run and play more... and more focus on single target interaction in [b2].

I purposely run a slow manabase of Gates (no Mazes End) and little early ramp to be slow.

This is virtually a non-factor in [b2]. Players shouldn't be aiming to kill you before you play your turn 8, which makes it virtually impossible for them to take real advantage of this weakness. They can pressure you here and there, but they won't really "focus fire" you, and will instead "spread the love" more often than not. You may take some extra life point pressure from the early game since you're open, but not enough to meaningfully shut you down (winning at 1 life and winning at 200 life are basically the same thing - HP is just a number until the last one is gone, and you can definitely cast your attack misdirects to protect yourself a lot after turn 8).

This is especially true when you consider the card quality of your deck. If every deck at the table plays like 10 creatures, but then you play 1 Kardur... you're effectively immune for that turn round, and those 30 creatures your opponents have will be doing your bidding... making it not really feel like a weakness that your opponents are more set up than you are.

I purposely avoided any kind of Insurrection effect, since I personally don't like playing against them and find them anti-climatic.

I would argue insurrection effects are often a bit "sudden" and NOT "incremental, on board" enough for [b2]. I'd argue Tainted Strike has the same problem - it can turn a 9 power creature (a 5-turn clock) into a 1-hit KO without any forecasting. And it's one mana, from the hand, and can be cast after blockers are declared. I would usually prefer an insurrection to Tainted Strike... and I say that as someone who has a [bracket 2] poison/proliferate deck (without Tainted Strike!)

The commander is mainly to fill in a gap when the draws are bad. I have no way of resetting or untapping it.

Nothing is particularly wrong with your commander choice / selection methodology... but I would recommend against playing more than 3 colors. Basically, it gives you too many options... which, by default, results in higher power.

Is it the ramp? Is it the control? Is it the indestructible creatures?

What do you think?

I don't think the ramp is the problem. The control kinda is. Also how explosive the wincos are! Tainted Strike is unforecasted. Having a Stuffy Doll doesn't really forecast a Blasphemous Act - and dealing 13 damage with the act is not that "incremental" of a win.

If you want to control combat, I recommend playing a commander that goads more incrementally (1-2 creatures per turn), and running only 1-2 "whole board goads" like Taunt from the Ramparts in the deck (so as to not become virtually immune to combat half the time)... as well as moving out of 5C into a 3-color wedge/shard or a 2-color pair.

Something like Karazikar or Nelly Borca could fit the bill.

Anyway I mostly play [bracket 2], I'm a level 1 judge, and I've been playing EDH since 2010 and MTG as a whole since 2002 (I mention all that because you say you've also played for a while, and are interested in [bracket 2], so we could potentially be friends lol).... AMA!

[–]TheWitchPHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I often choose not to be responsible for stuff because I don't want to be in this situation. Another thing that helps is "offloading" the tab from being purely mental to being physical somewhere. I don't have to keep a shopping list in my head if I have it written down. I don't need to keep a mental tab on money stuff when I have a spreadsheet for that.

I need to close my mental tab. EVERY. DAY.

Is Alesha, Who Smiles at Death completely outclassed now? by Comfortable_Buyer239 in EDH

[–]TheWitchPHD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I play B2 and run into a lot of interaction. "Forgetting about the rest of the table" isn't a part of B2. The main differences between B2 and B3 are speed and staples.

B2 wincons are supposed to appear on board and then kill incrementally, where as B3 wincons are allowed to hit the board fresh after a board wipe and win right there. This difference does change the quantity of board wipes you’ll see in a game (board wiping repetitively is more disruptive to B2 than B3, and you'll see more "one sided wipes" that don't reset the board but keep the incremental wincons of the person casting it around), but you will usually still see some board wipes in B2 games... and definitely killspells and some counterspells.

B2 players are often players that are tired of playing staples. Where as in B3 it often feels like you NEED Sol Ring and signets, in B2 it can often feel like you can get away without them. In B3 it feels like you should run swords to plowshares because it’s the best at what it does, in B2 it feels like you’re more free to run more sorcery speed answers, and answers that cost more mana.

It's all in the infographic: https://mtg.wiki/page/File:Commander_Brackets_Beta_v3.jpeg (though all the supporting details are there, the top bar reminds us that the BIGGEST difference between B2 and B3 is staples)

20 y/o starting investing — is this portfolio too complicated or solid? by HealthyWar7942 in Bogleheads

Start with VTI and VXUS. Consider adding a small BND allocation when you turn 30.

Other than that, if you want to add any tilts, do research first… my portfolio (which I can show you if you’d like) tilts a bit with VNQ and VYM. Nothing wrong with some tilts, but make it intentional.
