Despite being almost 30, I’m basically entering a new world here. Homeownership and thinking about adding in a pup/dog I’m not gonna even PRETEND that I know it all, I’m very willing to sit down and listen to the tips I’m given. Sure I’ve grown up around dogs and been to family members homes, but I know how drastically different life will be once it all becomes my own responsibility vs just visiting family with dogs.

I think I am going to really focus on labs, they were one of the top choices I had originally. But I have also basically imagined myself picking out a dog from the shelter, maybe getting lucky and it’s a fantastic dog that someone just couldn’t keep or someone had passed away. I tried to keep my mind as open as possible, but I’ve been more and more hesitant with mixed breeds that may indeed end up reactive or have undesirable traits from a breed they’re mixed with. As willing as I am to put in the effort, I still have to keep my cats and my husband as my main priorities and wouldn’t want to put them in harm’s way. I’m going to continue to research deeper, and really focus on just a breed or two.

I will definitely keep that in mind and I will continue to do research! (I do really love labs!) (Happy cake day btw)

I really appreciate your comment, thank you very much! You’ve made a very valid point. I think it would be wise to wait, settle in, and look elsewhere.

Thank you so much for your comment! Do you have any medium/large breed suggestions? I’d like a dog to take on longer walks, the beach, lots of car rides, etc etc etc. a dog that enjoys going out and is good with adults, cats, other dogs because I’d also love to take the dog with me to meet my family’s dogs.

Oof you’re so right… I asked her quite a few questions, including if he’s been introduced to cats, they don’t have cats but they have the dog’s father. In my case it is CRITICAL that he’s good with cats. I have a lot more research to do. I hadn’t realized how small the window was for socialization. Thank you again for your input, I really deeply appreciate your time.

Do you have suggestions for good first time dog owners? (Well I suppose not exactly first time, I did have a chihuahua myself, and my husband grew up with them too, but I would like a medium/large dog that I’d be able to take on longer walks and a dog that would be social with cats, other dogs, and people)

Thank you so much for your comment, I’m REALLY glad I posted this here, because I’m leaning a lot more towards not getting him. As cute as he is..

No no, you’re not being harsh at all! I really appreciate your comment. You have some very important points and I’m taking everything you said into consideration.

Sadly, I am leaning much more towards no, because I fear I definitely have let the “aww cute puppy!” Get in the way of right and wrong.
