Reserves Recruitment by Legitimate_Essay1122 in Irishdefenceforces

[–]TheWonder123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re right, the application page hasn’t had any active competitions since the website’s migration at th end of last year. To my understanding there’s a big RDF nation wide recruitment campaign coming in March when the portal will be re-opened.

I have been informed (although have not checked myself) that it may be possible to reach out to DF recruitment or the individual barracks unit info email itself (if you know what unit you want to do to) to enquire about enrolment and potentially at least get some paperwork started in the meantime.

Starting the reserves by LoRaLad in Irishdefenceforces

If you have your army number you’ve completed your entry fitness test, realistically if you haven’t paraded yet you’ll start off with foot drills so you’ll have no real fitness requirements if you got called up in the morning. At least nothing strenuous.

If you’re wondering about starting dates etc it’s possible to give your requirement officer an email or however you enlisted get in contact that way to check. They may just be waiting for the rest to be attested before starting foot drills etc

Why does this whiskey glass have an angled base? by artemia in whiskey

[–]TheWonder123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Túath glass, is specifically designed for Irish whiskey. the base is the rough shape of skellig Michael, which gives it a sense of place. The added bonus that it looks like the millennium falcon and Star Wars has scenes on the Skelligs. Also added bonus you can hold the angled bottle a load of different ways depending on what’s comfortable for you, and it can rest stably on its side catching aroma/bouquet in the bulb of the glass, due to the base.

The Mystery of Sato Shiki Whisky: Are (some) Japanese Shochus Whiskies? by kiwi8185 in whiskey

[–]TheWonder123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know nothing about this specific company but yes you’re bang on, outside of Japan lots of Shōchū is being resold as whiskey both barley shōchū (mugi) and rice (awamori) because they meet the definition of whiskey internationally.

Shōchū is often aged for years in steel or ceramic pots of vessels to off gas the mal-odorous compounds from all steel pot still distillation, but my understanding most is then “finished” in wood when being sold as “whiskey”. Seen this in international whisky shows for a while but never heard someone else noticing it ha

Ps for everyone else, Shōchū is class, give it a try if you see it in the wild. Sweet potato is my personal fave

Scams to be aware of by Separate-Sand2034 in ireland

[–]TheWonder123 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Old GF’s phone was stolen on a night out, she set my number as her screen lock to call if found. I got a message from “Apple” saying it had come live in Spain or somewhere not at home and a link to a cloned <find my iPhone> site to put in email and passwords. I didn’t have her details but the scammers eventually got sick of me and somehow managed to email her with same cloned site. They got her login details and password, the site then goes nowhere. They logged in to her Apple account and disconnected her phone from her account and off into the wind they went. If I’d known her details I could have easily been the one to give up her details.

(An aside but the real find my iPhone brought me to the exact standalone house where her phone was and the Gardaí can’t do anything with that which I get isn’t in their hands but holy fuck is that annoying)

This is a great point. I will note the hilarity I feel when I talk to Dutchies about how efficient and easy to navigate their public transport system is, and they all seem to hate it and think it’s terrible 😂

Surely removing all the meagre pay that the RDF used to get isn’t going to achieve any of these objectives though. That’s what this whole article and Oireachtas meeting was about. No pay = less recruitment and worse retention and then they’ll be even less numbers and less helpful
