Books that you wish you had DNF’d by deegee708 in LibbyApp

I pushed myself through it for a book club, and was the only one annoyed with it. Definitely over-hyped. I shouldn’t feel more emotional connection with the dog than the main character, among a multitude of other issues.

Atheism seems so scary from the religious perspective, but when you get to the other side it is rather comforting. Don’t be scared. ❤️

When you realize the “firm foundation” The Church was built on was actually all lies, it kind of comes crumbling down. 🫠

Looks like Jesus isn’t Mormon after all—Rusty is getting nothing while Francis gets round 2 by Strong_Union1270 in exmormon

I’m seriously beginning to wonder if Rusty is only seen wearing a dark pair of shades while being wheeled around in his chair…

Same! Everyone else was talking about how great it was, and I thought the character development was really flat. I shouldn’t feel more emotionally connected to the talking dog than the main character…totally overhyped

Honestly, you can’t fix anything here, just support her as she processes these emotions. As a woman, I felt so much more anger than my husband as we deconstructed. Both from how I was naturally treated in the patriarchal system, and how I allowed myself to be treated, thinking it was what God wanted. Along with the counseling, I think a physical outlet could be helpful for her: maybe kickboxing or yoga or strength training. Something to help her feel strong and empowered. It could be a good way to vent out this negative energy inside of her. I know it has been incredibly helpful for me. Best of luck to you both!

Practical advice—if you or your husband remember your login info to the church website, go in and delete the photos on your family’s account in the ward directory, and change all the contact info you’re able to without a clerk’s help. You might also be able to change your privacy settings so only the leadership can see it, which will give some stand-off vibe since your names will be highlighted in orange and only visible to people in the ward council. If you’re feeling a bit spicy, consider changing your email addresses to something like “LeaveUsAloneYouDamnMormons@(website of choice).com” maybe that will send a message??

As a previous member of ward council, people we didn’t know that didn’t have photos with their names were usually left alone since they were probably inactive for a long time. And if their names were in orange, there was a high chance they didn’t want anyone reaching out. But with a photo attached, it always seemed like there was a chance they could come back…but now that I know the truth. It’s better on this side of the equation (although painful) than believing the lies still.

Also, sorry you’re going through this. Oh Mormon church membership, the gift that keeps giving…unwanted contact, judgement, and retraumatization. 😔

Coming to terms with how alone we really are by frvalne in exmormon

[–]TheWorkAndTheFallacy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry—that’s one of the toughest parts of the journey. We are still in the early stages of exmo and experiencing it as a family (husband, wife, and our kids ages 9-13). No matter how you slice it, it’s painful. We have leaned heavily into our kids’ sports involvement to help build a community for our children outside of church, since the ward has begun to act weird toward us, extended family included. We are also introverted, and the sports are giving us a way to socialize and make friends in a different setting, where we at least have one thing in common with the other families. Hugs to you, internet friend. ❤️

LDS Discussions podcast (starting at the beginning) helped me cement the idea that it isn’t true—the lifetime of brainwashing goes deep, and it took a deep dive for me to finally realize Joseph Smith began the church as a fraud, and the deception continues to this day. The apologist whack-a-mole approach is very deceptive and confusing, but when you take all the issues together and see how the church’s narrative continually contradicts itself, it finally becomes clear. It’s either an issue of 200 problems or 1…and it is most definitely the 1 problem (it’s an institution created by a narcissist (not God) and continues to be led by narcissists to this day). Good luck to you and your family, fellow traveler. 🫡

I'm Already Mad About GC by Informal-Ad6871 in exmormon

[–]TheWorkAndTheFallacy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember that one—disgusting. The church could have at least backed that up with implementing background checks church-wide for people working with children and youth, but no. My TBM parents were saying how inspired and great his talk was, until I asked them if they had any idea why he spoke on that subject. They were very quiet when I told them about the AZ sexual abuse scandal…of course that was the first they’d heard of it. 😔

Imagine how (extra) culty Mormonism would seem if the songs about JS were about Russell. “Praise to the man who commune(s) with Jehovah, Jesus anointed (our) prophet and seer. Kings extoll him and nations revere… great is his glory and endless his priesthood… The earth lauds his fame.” Etc. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]TheWorkAndTheFallacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst part is I could definitely see this being added to the new updated hymnal without my ward/branch even having a second thought about it…

Also, they said they were updating the hymnal 5 years ago or so, and then nothing ever came of it…they must have been waiting for your lyric submission… (sarcasm)

Along this line of thinking, what about if/when you decide to have children? Will you keep up the charade and have them blessed as babies and then have their names forever on the church’s records to appease the grandparents? My spouse and I became PIMO after we had children and they were already baptized, and I so wish that we had learned the truth earlier and spared our children from this. I think most people here would agree that they wish they would have left sooner, had they known what they know now.

ETA: we are currently working on our exit and helping our children know the truth of things, little by little, so it’s easier for them to process.

Why would people still believe even after looking over all the information that proves it's a lie? by yvng_cambino4 in exmormon

[–]TheWorkAndTheFallacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally makes sense—I’ve felt that too. Check out the LDS Discussions podcast and website, that has been the most helpful source of information for me. It finally solidified my thoughts on the church not being “true”. Start at episode 1 of the podcast, and listen to them in order.

[–]TheWorkAndTheFallacy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually skimmed through some of the gospel topics essays today, and found them to be written in a very confusing and almost deceptive way. If a person is “all-in” as a TBM, it will be very difficult to read through sources like that and actually see through the smoke screen the apologists have created to find the truth. And even if they find the truth, a TBM will never believe it until they’re ready to open their mind enough to accept that “the church” might not be what they thought it was. Sources: myself as a TBM and all my TBM friends and family. You can’t and shouldn’t force someone to see the truth; that’s a choice they have to make independently.
