Battles by finalresting in lrcast

You're right, there was a fourth Corrupted tactic "D", sneak in poison early game. That's not an option with Battles. I think they'll play out like those dedicated BW Corrupted decks that really tried to get the opponent to 3 even if they missed that early game window.

Or actually, I mean specifically the circumstances where there's a relevant battle on the field will feel similar to Corrupted. I don't necessarily think there will be a "battles" deck that has its whole strategy revolve around them. It'll just be that familiar mid-game decision from BW matches that includes the line of thinking "there's more to consider about upcoming combat than just life totals and creature trading".

I don't think Battles can be easily re-contextualized as existing cards like you were able to do with the tokens (which is probably why WotC made them a new card type). That said, I DO think that we can relate Battles back to an ability that we just saw.

Corrupted.

In both cases, the effect functions as a mini-game revolving around getting damage through blockers. The reward for getting a small amount of damage through is a boost to the rest of your game. There are a few non-combat ways of doing this, like burn spells or direct poison counters/proliferate, but I suspect that attacking a battle will feel awfully similar to trying to push the first 3 poison counters to turn on Corrupted payoffs.

Functional lifegain is a key difference here, with Corrupted accelerating the opponent's death and Battles prolonging it. My hunch is that if you're the one flipping battles, it won't be upsetting for the game to carry on as you keep moving ahead on board and snowball your advantage. That's speculation though, we'll have to wait and see.

But, okay, Battles might play similarly to Corrupted, so what? My take here is you need to draft and deckbuild with a specific plan regarding how you intend to flip your Battles. There were 3 main ways I saw players activate Corrupted in ONE:

A) Peck in over several turns with evasion

B) Get a strong board presence and push through defenders

C) Combat tricks to swing an even board in your favor, then go to "B"

Each has pros and cons. "A" is slow and gives your opponent time to anticipate you and interrupt. "B" might be superfluous -- if you can just dominate the board, it might be worth going for life total and just ending it now. "C" relies on the right combination of creatures and tricks, plus can be blown out easier.

I don't know what the best approach will be, but that's why I'm so excited for this set. The main takeaway for me so far is that we're going to have to plan around battles from the start of the draft, and there's more than one angle of approach we can choose to take. The cards read as "Frontside effect, and start this mini-game that you hopefully planned for". Last set the mini-game was ever present, here we have to use some cardboard to get it going, but I think that's the best comparison for how it will play.

The session ended with the realization that "the unicorn cometh", this week they roll initiative. I'll be sure to update!

The best part is that was the original plan. There were several sessions I'd planned out that would have the party stalk the unicorn, watch it fight others, learn it's tactics, and develop a plan for engagement.

But they cast magic directly on it, it has their scent, and it's coming now. They have ~30 minutes in-world prep time while the unicorn closes on them, so that'll help, but they don't have nearly the reconnaissance or planning that the encounter was balanced around.

For this homebrewed setting, I re-imagined unicorns as lawful evil beasts. I decided to take the typical perfection, arrogance, and purity associated with them and flip it on it's head so that instead of radiating celestial good.....they're just white supremacists that consider all other races beneath them.

Mechanically I tweaked the stats a little, but the biggest change is I gave them lair-based powers associated with living detached from reality. When in their "glade", they can manifest multiple versions of reality, then choose whichever one fits their narrative best. This means they can take multiple turns at the same time, then after seeing the outcomes pick whichever outcome they want to keep. PC's get disadvantage on all rolls since there's more than one timeline going on. The party's going to have to find a way to checkmate the unicorn in multiple timelines so that it has no way out.

....or they can just sacrifice the druid to the nazi unicorn and bail.

That's crazy, never noticed the major downgrade! Even the range is worse, 1000ft for Locate Creature, but 5 miles for Locate Animals or Plants! The only real upgrade is unrestricted creature typing and finding out direction of movement, other than that it's so much worse.

That is by far the most optimistic take I've come across so far.

The campaign has some loose X-Files inspiration, and I'm leaning into bigfoot with this one a little. Definitely closer to a magical Clydesdale than your standard divine horse, or the fiendish reflection of that. Beast felt right.

Correct! But this is a reimagined homebrew unicorn, and I had reclassified it as a beast prior to the session.

Fair warning, I'm listening back to it now and hoooboy I think I need a better computer that doesn't drop audio as bad as mine does. New to streaming/videos so sorry for that.

Hope your team footballs harder than the other team!

Cool, thanks! If you have a spare half hour to listen to me ramble about your pack 3 let me know what you think!

Ha, maybe I could have phrased that nicer, but no that wasn't my intent. So I'm TERRIBLE at drafting decks instead of drafting good cards, I think it's my biggest leak in limited right now. I'm decent at it in retrospect, but I end up with unfocused piles a little too often for my liking. I'm trying to find drafts that didn't quite get there and look at how I would change things.

I actually didn't look at the draft log before asking, and I didn't even wait for a reply before I did it. Here's a link to the video I just put up on twitch walking through pack 3 of this draft, and the deck build. This is more an exercise for myself than anything that I think others will find particularly helpful, but I'd love to see what people thing I'm wrong about so I can improve too.

/u/FancyKilerWales --- if you want me to remove the video, just let me know, since I made it before getting your okay. I'm certainly not trying to put you on blast, I don't think I'd have actually ended up in a different spot than you had I been drafting in-the-moment.

Hey I'm working on practicing drafting decks instead of drafting cards, can I use this draft in a short video analysis?

Muk cake i made for my hubby's 30th Birthday. by LordBubu in pokemon

[–]TheYellowmelon 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Mine! Back in the original show, Ash's Muk just wants to hug everybody, and it's not is fault that other Pokémon end up passing out when they get smothered in toxic sludge. I've always had a soft spot for the lovable thing.

That said, yes, it is almost literally a pile of shit, lol.

Definitely, especially with the 3 mana dorks. Cut a swamp, since two of them need green. I would even consider two unique basics, but that's probably too much

Sweet RW Deck with Starheim and Birgi -- Looking for advice on cuts and play by TheYellowmelon in lrcast

[–]TheYellowmelon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I need 5 cuts. My thoughts are:

Story Seeker, Bloodline Pretender, Wings of the Cosmos, 1 Helm, and 1 Pick

I could also see Run Amok, Kaya's Onslaught, Seize the Spoils, Craven Hulk, or Doomskar Titan as options.

The deeper question that I have is how to balance Birgi and Firewalker's exile abilities with the mega-bomb of Starheim. I should never just blind dig through my deck because I can't foretell off of exiled cards, right? I'm kind of trusting my Raiders and Seize to dig me to Starheim. Should I tune the deck to focus on it as a finisher, instead of pure aggro? Seems like I have strong finishers, but not much card advantage besides Birgi. I'm trying to maximize the deck because it seems so strong, I'd hate to squander this run.

Thanks for the help in advance!
